I was watching the show and reading "Pretty Little Liars" (don't judge me! I got sucked in by one of my female friends) One of the characters ends up permanently blind, which started me thinking.

If you were to lose one of your senses tomorrow, which of the five senses could you live without? Hearing, Sight, Touch, Smell, or Taste?

    That's easy: Taste.
I don't enjoy food all that much, anyway.

    I could lose touch.

I am an artist and could not handle losing my sight.
Taste and smell are linked. I loves my food!
I also love music too much. Gotta keep the hearing!

Taste by far. At least I could still smell the food and a majority of "taste" is really smell anyway icon_smile.gif

For sure taste! I would be a hell of a lot skinnier if I couldn't taste any of my food! That would be an easy one for me.

Taste, then tofu wouldn't be any different than a White Castle. Eating healthy would be so much easier.

Touch...many of my nerve endings on my body are already dead, so losing the rest would not be a big deal.

Giving up taste or smell would severely impact the other, so it'd be like losing 1.5 senses.

Personally, I'd give up my 5th sense. You know, that ESPN I have.

    Hearing.

And some of you would give up touch? That's just crazy man. Tactile is like one of the best things in the world.

But if I could choose between all the senses I would give up the vomeronasal organ.

Taste. There are multiple afferent neurons that control this sense. It'd kind of be impossible to loose the entire 'sense' without losing motor control as well. Besides the olfactory nerve would most easily compensate for this loss. Happens all the time in stroke patients.

Giving up touch would be the most stupid thing you could do. How would you know if you injure yourself and then go on to make it worse? Or what if you cant tell how hot/cold your bath is and you end up getting sick?

Either way, I made a thread similar to this before, but it was a matter of being blind, deaf or mute. Everybody tends to choose mute.

Still, I think for the sake of losing my appetite I would choose to lose the sense of taste. The best a sense of taste could do for me (in terms of survival) would be to tell if food has gone a little past its date when all other signs point to uncetainty.

But if I can still smell, then I could tell if there was a gas leak/smoke, or if I smell bad, or if the cologne I choose is good enough for me, stuff like that. Oh and I find it disturbing, the idea of lingering around somebodyelses silent but deadly fart without even knowing - you know, the ones that smell like eggs and cabbage.
