Going to my first gay pride this weekend (Phx). I was thinking about bringing one of my straight buddies with me and he asked what it was... I thought about it and decided I really have no idea. All I came up with was there is a lot of alcohol involved. So what exactly do people do at gay pride. I know theres a parade but other than that....

Drink specials at gay bars in the parade area. Local gay-friendly politicians. Trying to dive and catch free condoms thrown out from various parade floats. People trying to get you to sign petitions for gay rights legislation and other causes like medical marijuana. Sometimes there is a beer tent with a dj sponsored by a local bar. There might be drag queen bingo. You generally just walk around meeting people, running into friends, and judging people by who should have kept their shirt on and who needs to take it off.

Lots of sales at nearby stores. I got hellllllllla protein powder that day for CHEAP. Prepare to see a lot of people wearing things they wouldn't wear any other time of year (except maybe Halloween) and a lot of petitions.

Hmmm. . . PHX Pride to me was always lots of booze, drugs, and sex going around. Some years I participated; some I didn't. Depends on who you're going with.

-The clinic on Roosevelt is always packed on Monday morning after pride. Still boggles me that the gays just assume STIs will show up immediately.

It could also be that safe sex and hiv organizations were passing out literature and had booths set up and so getting tested is fresh in people's mind and not that they had risky sex at the pride parade.

That's a really great observation. I never thought of it that way. I just knew if you didn't find a hookup over the weekend the clinic on Monday was a great place to look.

Unless you have pride in drag queens, public sex, speedos, leather, and sex toys, I would definitely pass.

Sometimes choosing to be Gay is just disgusting to me.

Sometimes being a hater towards how others live is just disgusting to me.

I might go to the PHX Parade too, not sure what to expect as this will also be my first time, if I go.

when sexual exhibitionists hijack the most visible gay event every year you bet your ass gay men with a bit of social decency have a right to be pissed off about it.

Just because I say I don't have pride in something doesn't mean I'm a hater of it. We all have our opinions and I can't stand to be around gay people longer than a few hours and I'm annoyed. Grow a penis already! You're not a woman...

Depends on the city. Some have big street festivals and block parties, hundreds of vendors & exhibitors, stages with live entertainment, dancing, speeches by celebrities & politicians, tons of activities. Typically over the weekend, but some have a month of related activities. Look up Phoenix Pride to find out.

Well said. Most of the world sees that in the media and assumes everyone who is homosexual has pride in those things!

    SOME DO NOT.

I have never been to Pride and even if I go, I will not dance around waving a rainbow flag in a thong. However, if you are so against it, go out there and show them that you're not like the sexual exhibitionists. I get exactly where you're coming from, but people who do stuff like that do it because they enjoy it, just like you and I do things that we enjoy and they should not be discriminated against by gays for that reason.

They hijacked pride to be able to walk around basically naked and simulate sex acts on a float. I don't support a parade that promotes the right of sexual exhibitionists to do that crap in public. Why do they get a pass one day a year to do this? Its illegal.

Mehhh, I see your point. I think I'm more interested in seeing it with my own eyes to get the experience, eventually if not this year, rather than go to it annually. I know some people are really excited for it, but idk, just not my kind of thing...

This goes without saying. You WILL NOT ever see me there. But, me not attending doesn't change the fact that it perpetuates what my straight friends think "gay people" are all about. And it becomes what gay people are "proud" to be as Gay pride. So God forbid you are attracted to men... all of a sudden there is a whole list of things you have to fit into that have nothing to do with sexual attraction!

I'm frankly annoyed at the loudest screamers for "gay pride". They are making it more difficult for people who are normal to come out since they continually create division instead of integration by BEING NORMAL. This isn't 1975. The time for people to be themselves and not try and fit into a stupid agenda of mannerisms and likes/dislikes just to segregate themselves has come. Seriously. Lets try maturing.

So let's see, the group that says it is under-represented, and say that wild people have taken over, are going to avoid it, so that no one can see gay people are more than the wild people that took over the parade.

For some reason this seems self defeating.
