John Amaechi's perspective is spot on. I have always respected Kobe's talent as a player. I don't hold alot of respect for him as a man, given not just this, but some other areas in his past. He could come out of this in stellar manner if he chooses to do so. I don't think he will. American sports is one of the last bastians of homophobia and will be one of the hardest to crack. But this could be a starting point if Kobe will own up. He can keep his money. The fine is just a slap on the wrist anyway.

I'm not convinced I believe Kobe when he says his use of the F-word was just used in the "heat of the moment." How does your brain all of a sudden send that message to your mouth if it isn't already part of your vocabulary and mentality? The brain doesn't create those unjust words on the spot, it already knows them and uses them.

And now he wants to appeal the fine. The NBA should double it rather than reduce it. It takes me years to earn what he makes in one game, just shut up and ask if it's ok for him to donate to an appropriate cause rather than pay the fine to the NBA. It's time for Kobe to demonstrate his sincerity not just with his words of apology but by his actions.

Oh you guys need to get off of this pc bs. I use words like "fag," "nigger," and "bitch" sometimes and that doesn't make me homophobic, racist, or sexist. Give the man a break. You all are acting like he denied the Holocaust or something.

I don't even know how to respond to this.

Honestly, I've reworded this response about five times now trying to figure out how to get my point across, but I just can't seem to pull it together today.

Suffice it to say, if you really think this isn't a big deal, maybe you should re-read the article posted - the writer has a nice way of explaining precisely why this isn't something that should be swept under the rug.

I don't know if you are homophobic, racist, or sexist, but when you speak like that you appear to be, and you hurt others, if only those that overhear you.

Putting aside what he said for a moment..."give the man a break?"

WTF??? He plays a kids sport and earns like 5,000 times more than the average person in the country to do it.

Sorry, but I think Kobe has enough breaks that those who are still offended do not owe it to him to "give him a break."

Good grief...he could retire now, and live in the lap of luxury for several lifetimes, and to hear you talk about it, he's soooooo hard done by!

Give him a break? Give me a break!

But there's a difference in the way you use those words vs if some straight, white guy calling you just that.

Did you read the John Amaechi article?

"When someone with the status of Kobe Bryant, arguably the best basketball player in a generation, hurls that antigay slur at a referee or anyone else — let’s call it the F-word — he is telling boys, men and anyone watching that when you are frustrated, when you are as angry as can be, the best way to demean and denigrate a person, even one in a position of power, is to make it clear that you think he is not a real man, but something less.

I challenge you to freeze-frame Bryant’s face in that moment of conflict with the referee Bennie Adams. Really examine the loathing and utter contempt, and realize this is something with which almost every lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender person is familiar. That is the sentiment people face in middle and high schools, in places of worship, work and even in their own homes across the United States."

this is the essence, I think. that many like KB, when filled with anger and frustration, the worst thing they could think of calling someone is "a fucking fag".
This mainstream use of words like fag and gay meaning something very bad or negative is only promoting self loathing and shame in young gay/bi people, or anyone who feel different in some way.

Well its very apparent that you are NOT a role model for many, or a high profile figure in sports either.
With that attitude you'll go real far in life..icon_rolleyes.gif

What a powerful piece of writing - thanks Metta8 (as always icon_biggrin.gif) for posting.

    From the article:

"A young man from a Los Angeles public school e-mailed me. You are his idol. He is playing up, on the varsity team, he has your posters all over his room, and he hopes one day to play in college and then in the N.B.A. with you. He used to fall asleep with images of passing you the ball to sink a game-winning shot. He watched every game you played this season on television, but this week he feels less safe and less positive about himself because he stared adoringly into your face as you said the word that haunts him in school every single day."

On some level you are right
(SN: would new2chattanooga be ok if someone called him the n-word)
    However everyone has their limit
Are you saying that there is NOTHING that someone would say that would make you offended?

    Yes and yes icon_biggrin.gif

I just think that it's pretty weak that one would let words bend him or her out of shape. I don't care if a non-Black calls me a nigger or says "nigger" out loud. I don't let that anger me. I would even defend his or her right to say whatever word he or she wants. The same goes for if someone were to call me a fag(got). It just doesn't bother me, and in my opinion, it shouldn't bother anyone else because, at the end of the day, a Black person knows that he or she isn't a nigger, a gay man knows that he isn't a fag(got), and a woman knows that she isn't a bitch.

Now, as far as this "role model" rubbish is concerned, Bryant doesn't get paid to be anyone's role model. He's paid to play basketball. Anyone looking up to him as someone in whom to seek ethical direction is looking in the wrong place.

    I'm done.
