Jake Shears (of Scissor Sister), Freddie Mercury, Andy Bell (Erasure), Morrissey, Jonsi Birgisson (Sigur Ros) Michael Stipe (REM), Rufus Wainwright, George Michael, Elton John

Maybe not as famous or as iconic as the female singers but they are all gay or bi musicians

    You don't know Freddy Mercury?!?

I don't know if you can have this kind of conversation if you don't know who Freddy Mercury is.

Well since most of those are women who are just gay friendly and not actually gay/bi, I would like to nominate a masculine gay friendly guy for those of us who don't identify with the diva thing. So I nominate Chris Meloni. If you don't know who he is, you should google him. It won't be a waste of time, I promise : P

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lou_Reed

Reed was born into a Jewish family at Beth El Hospital in Brooklyn and grew up in Freeport, Long Island. Contrary to some sources, his birth name was Lewis Allan Reed, not Louis Firbanks[4] (that name was a joke started by Lester Bangs for Creem magazine). Having learned to play the guitar from the radio, he developed an early interest in rock and roll and rhythm and blues, and during high school played in a number of bands.[5] His first recording was as a member of a doo wop-style group called The Jades.

Reed received electroconvulsive therapy in his teen years to "cure" homosexual behavior;[6] he wrote about the experience in his 1974 song, "Kill Your Sons". In an interview, Reed said of the experience:

They put the thing down your throat so you don't swallow your tongue, and they put electrodes on your head. That's what was recommended in Rockland County to discourage homosexual feelings. The effect is that you lose your memory and become a vegetable. You can't read a book because you get to page 17 and have to go right back to page one again.[7]

Whatever happened to the gay icons of yesteryear when I was a gay fledgling?

    Bette Davis
    Joan Crawford
    Judy Garland
    Montgomery Clift
    James Dean
    Bette Midler
    Marilyn Monroe

Have these icons been lost on the younger generation, or have they just become extremely cliche?

If I understand what you are saying, here is my humble attempt at an answer.

Are you equating "icon" with over the top personality on the flamboyant end of the spectrum with a broad appeal/fan base? If so then Elton and maybe Freddie the only male icons I've seen mentioned Most of the other names mentioned do not have the universal appeal that the woman mentioned have, and are mostly niche performers.

And even Michel Jackson, and Prince while over the top and flamboyant at times, are associated with the Gay Culture like these woman.

I think there is a cultural bias to your list as well. The cultural media, especially in the US, in all it's progressiveness, is still very uncomfortable with "GAY." Elton had to be Huge, and Freddie had to be dead, before their gayness was excepted. Even in this "accepting" day and age it is safer for the Queens to be female, even for gay fans.

So next to say, Bin Laden, Mariah Carey is still more disgusting? One of the most talented singer+songwriters, best selling female artist ever with most solo #1s...active supporter of gays and philanthropist? Um okay.

I'm not sure if it's the gay icon thing, because some of the girls sing well known pop music that gay boys just happen to like.

A lot of industrial gays love Faderhead, Combichrist and The Birthday Massacre.

Go figure that there are differences in the segregated populations. icon_razz.gif

I happen to love Pop Punk/Emo music. I could care less if the rest of the gays love my stuff. icon_razz.gif

But to answer... it's because a lot of the representations of popular gay men icons aren't overly positive and some people just hesitate to push them. I'm still waiting for a badass pop gay or punk gay that I can go, "Fuck yeah! Don't care if you like him!" instead a lot of them are just... flat with me.

    Amen.....

I often wonder if she cops slack because people only associate dressing sexy with those that lack vocal talent? Hehehehe

So a female can't dress sexy and sing ballads?

Madonna made a career out of pushing sexual boundaries, Mariah has never dressed as blatantly sexual yet gets slammed for wanting to embrace her curves.....

If she dressed like she did at the beginning of her career now then she would be called outdated..... She can't win...

The sales and accolades speak for themselves

Forget the incredible sales and just focus on her angelic and iconic voice. People that diss her talent are either deaf or delusional. I understand if you don't like her songs, but being delusional enough to say she can't sing is lmfao.....I can't.
