Just in case anyone has missed it, a new rival to Battlefield Earth for worst movie of all time has been on general release this week:

    http://www.atlas-shrugged-movie.com/atlas-shrugged-movie-trailer/

Perhaps the most threatening part of the film is the promise that there's a sequel in the works.

So why is the Tea Party so obsessed with Rand?

    * She was a militant atheist and opponent of faith. [I agree with her here].
    * She was pro-abortion. [I agree with her here too!].

---and these are NECESSARY consequences of her Objectivist philosophy!

    * The thrust of her book/film is essentially that scientists who make up cool technology should be able to get rich [being a scientist, I have no problem with this---I've never heard of a CEO who invented anything, except maybe Wolfram].

I love how people are able to doublethink.

Ok I get the left hates this woman.

    Move on, the secrets out.

People understand what a Autocratic government based life is like.

And Americans reject the idea that government is the answer.
Every time its presented, reheated and reserved this ideal looses.
It will continue to loose, again , again and again.

So no need to bash a movie, that paid salaries of SAG, WGA, MPI and DGA union members.

LOL, it starts off ( amphetamine-addicted ), I mean come on.

Did he get Daily Kos points for that article?

Oh nonsense. Don't use overly general labels like "the left" when you have no authority to do so. In particular, the two Objectivists that I know are really actually leftwing/centrists.

But the movie is *exquisite* in its badness. It's really Battlefield Earth for a new generation of MST3Kers.

What I'm pointing out here is that people who have embraced Ayn Rand on the basis of the Tea Party have failed to comprehend her actual message, which is anti-religion, pro-abortion and extremely pro-science. Her heroes are *scientists* and *geniuses* which bear almost nothing in common with the CEOs of American corporations.

I guess what I'm saying is that my copy of Ayn Rand, which has been working as a terribly effective doorstop for some years, perhaps deserves a second reading. This scientist is going on strike!

As usual, I cannot grok what your post means. No one is pro-autocratic government. But Ayn Rand's "philosophy", such as it is, is just the intellectualization of greed and immoral behavior.

Ok, its a book, I am sorry you had to buy it.

But the particular fever and venom into hating a writer, or an artists is pretty extraordinary.

What you are trying to do is telling the people who embrace "Ayn Rand" as you say the tea party does is.

    "You are misinterpreting her"

She really is this....that the other thing.

All I am saying its pretty extraordinary for so called "free thinkers" to be so upset about a book.

Oh it was a present from an Objectivist. Obviously.

I have no clue what you're saying because you don't appear to be writing in sentences. If you're saying that "free thinkers" shouldn't participate in pluralistic literary criticism, you're even stupider than you look!

The article listed , and the remarks so far are that she is a horrible person with aberrant ideas, a drug addict, and who used medicare/ssi. If you dont like her work why would you read it again?

The slate article and the remarks you have made, are a bit different than literacy criticism. I didn't say it shouldn't be done. All I am saying is that you and a fair amount of others are very ruffled about a so called "bad book". Bad books are rarely talked about. Bad movies barely make it to the screen. It seems you and others talk about the motives, psyche and lifestyle of an Ayn Rand. When has that ever mattered ?

It seems you are saying she is a hypocrite.
Ok fine, its a work of fiction.
What is it that so bothers you about it? Did someone force you to read it?

But I didn't link to the slate article. I linked to the movie trailer on the movie website. I haven't even read the slate article!??!!?

I have not suggested that the book is bad, only that a significant portion of its ideological content has been neglected by the Tea Party. You're right in that this is not really literary criticism, it's really more like "read the bloody book! all of it!"

In any case, perhaps the worst book ever written is Dianetics, and it was a national bestseller for donkeys years.

I am not John Gault, don't worry.

I think its really funny. Maybe not you but I have tripped up a few friends on this very topic in the last few weeks. One went down a logical road to say " we should ban Ayn Rand , its dangerously untrue and misguided and fueled by drug addiction" This from a guy that very tastelessly has a homage to all of the ex's on his wall in Andy Warhol fashion.

Im sure he heard it on the Rachel Maddow show or some other left wing variety show.

Sounds like some are coming full circle, I thought the Right wing were the only ones who wanted to ban books?

Nobody is saying to ban it! Quite the reverse! I disagree absolutely with banning any books at all! Since all the teapartiers have spent $10 on buying the bloody book, I am merely asking them to ACTUALLY read it!

How on earth is that controversial!?!??!

Because musclemed is a dipshit, who obviously had some Chinese guy sit for his M-CATs.

The point of my posting the Slate article is to put the lie to the Tea Bagger ideas that Ayn Rand was anything other than a jealous, greedy drug-addicted bag of ass who spent her last days living as a "parasite" (her term, not mine) on SS and Medicare.

On its face, her ideology is ridiculous and her books do, indeed, make Dianetics look like John Mills. That a mass movement is behind her stunningly elitist ideology also shows how bankrupt what little theoretical underpinning the Tea Baggers have.

Even the end of Atlas Shrugged, is ridiculous. To whom are all those creative independent folks selling all their goods and services? icon_rolleyes.gif

Christian you cannot have one conversation without getting personal. You really cant help yourself can you?

By the way when it comes to MCATS, a Medical Degree's, we are not on the same level.

Chinese guy sit for the mcats? mmmm not only is that impossible but not worth it. If you do not have the brainpower and stamina behind you, there are more lucrative lines of work than medicine. You cant pass one test, then have 14 tests and 2 board certifications done by a paid test taker.

Your comment shows, you are a adult baby, who cannot make one argument without getting personal. It reflects badly on you, and negates any credibility you have.
Lastly , I have not called a Asian guy "Chinese" ever. Considering 1/4 of my medical school class was of Asian decent, I can say most would consider it racial and incentive to say "chinese".

First of all, YOU got personal first accusing Tim and I of not thinking for ourselves but regurgitating talking points from Rachel Maddow. Which, given you near inability to write a coherent sentence is hilarious.

I make constant arguments without getting personal. As the saying goes, if you can't take the heat get out of the kitchen.

And then you have two weird paragraphs about not calling an Asian guy "Chinese." Well, if the Asian guy in question is Korean or Japanese, of course I would not refer to them as "Chinese". I suspect this is a pathetic attempt to frame me as racially insensitive or some such nonsense. But, knowing several Chinese people, and plenty of Koreans, I can say with confidence that they are actually proud of their heritage and find being referred to as "Asian" by people ignorant of their cultures is far more offensive.

Your pathetic answer about knowing some Asians and they are proud to be called Chinese puts into perspective.

"If we don't agree with your politics we reserve the right to personally attack you. And don't forget we will criticize your grammar and spelling."

    pathetic.

Wait a second! You were the one who barged into this thread claiming that I said all sorts of things that actually I didn't say [I claimed the opposite in fact]. I have no intention of personally attacking you, but you have to agree that one of your above messages was so hastily written as to be incomprehensible. In my experience poor spelling and grammar is indicative of poor thinking.

jprichva saidNow, Christian, I for one will stoutly defend the books of Ayn Rand.

They make excellent doorstops. In that regard, really only Tolstoy is in her class.

That's exactly what I use my copy for! They're also good to sit on if you're exceptionally short (which, come to think of it, Ayn Rand actually was. Hmmmmm.)

On you being a physician: I don't take most of what people, particularly people with no pictures or identifying biographical information in their profiles, very seriously. I just assume they're lying or an impostor. On this board in particular, at least one or two conservative members, have created false profiles claiming to be in different professions then they were. They were eventually caught, and while I can't prove you're a reborn impostor, the way you right is eerily reminiscent of one of them.

My qualifications in discerning that are simple. I worked in healthcare for many years - as an administrator and then a "paper pushing" fundraiser (who, by the way, raised a good deal of the money to build a famous, 13-story outpatient cancer center), knowing many, many healthcare professionals, and being related to three doctors through my partner. For my job, I had to read, digest, and then pitch fairly detailed medical information on a range of healthcare topics and capital needs. I also worked directly with physicians and scientists to develop pitches for their needs, which required me to understand and be able to articulate a great deal of medical and scientific information to expert and lay audiences.

To my recollection, I have never dated a nurse, though my aunt is an oncology nurse.

I would never say that I am medical expert of any kind, but to succeed in my field (and I'm very successful in it), you must be able to learn a great deal about what you raise money for, so I'm very well-versed in healthcare, medicine and hospital operations. I am similarly well-versed in gay rights in particular and civil rights in general, producing independent media, education reform (and therefore the politics of US education both federally and in the majority of US states), and, more recently, since launching my own nonprofit, clostridium difficile (and other hospital-acquired) infections, their impact on public health, the pathology of the diseases they cause, traditional and integrative treatments, the state of reportable disease laws at the federal and local level.

Putting that aside, unlike a lot of people who talk shit on this site, I read voraciously, primarily nonfiction, pay attention to the news and generally make sure I know what I'm talking about before posting on this board.

You forgot one thing. You cannot seem to stop bringing up this "physician" issue.
I hope it irritates that you can only wonder who I am. And the fact that you actually keep score or worry about a fake account shows me how small and weird you really are.

    WHO THE HELL CARES.........

Despite your seemingly well written response , it doesn't match the nasty and needless personal comments written all over these forums.

The thing is "you think you know about medicine". Let me know when you are on the State Medical Board of California and New York. Until then you just think you know about the topic. And that is as a politely a way I know to address some " know it all" who wildly makes personal accusations.

It takes someone with a good amount of balls to make an accusation like that over and over again. You win that prize.
