AntoNomad saidTirana in Albania must be the most backward place on Earth. Also, Moscow is not very friendly towards gay people. But, to my surprise, Istanbul, Turkey, was very, very friendly...

They'd pretty much have to be with this going on.

Hmmm...first gay bar I ever went to was in Seoul. You were probably just in the wrong part of town. Itaewon had at least five gay bars. They were kind of hidden behind "hooker hill" though. I've found places in the U.S. of A less gay friendly than Seoul.

While homophobia can be encountered anywhere I'd say the worst are the places where the authorities are openly oppressing gays. Middle east would be such an area(excluding Israel).

Art_Deco saidSan Antonio, Texas is pretty bad. In fact, so is most of Texas, except a small portion of Houston, and downtown Austin. Arizona is lethal to gays (there is a documentary film about it a friend of mine made), and of course I'd be on my guard in all the Bible Belt States, to include the Florida panhandle.

On the other hand, surprising oases are Omaha, Nebraska, and Minneapolis, Minnesota. The OP is in Seattle, which is very gay-friendly, but he has to realize that's the exception in the US.

I used to live in Phoenix, Arizona, and there were plenty of gays there...never had a problem.

Alpha1 said ok.... I'm thinking any city in the Middle East and Africa. Moscow and Vatican City are also bad destinations as well.

Vatican City is swarming with closet cases.
Philly is the worst in North America......i was not out at the time.....got called "faggot" by strangers everyday.....i am a masculine guy, the folks have vinegar (sp.) in their blood....seriously!
I'm pretty sure that's not vinegar but the cheesesteak grease talking. You weren't wearing a Santa Claus outfit, were you? They already booed Kris Kringle out of town, so even the most macho gays get no mercy from the Rocky Balboa-wannabes. The DL guys are the most vocal name-callers, especially after their precious Flyers or Eagles lose. The term we liked to use is "throwing other people off their scent."

Any guess as to where Kobe Bryant claims to have grown up? He really grew up in the wealthy "Main Line" 'burbs... don't remind him because it pisses him off... but no doubt he was heavily city-influenced. It is the place where he learned the multitude of "contexts" in which F-bomb expletives are welcomed and embraced.

Illadelph's got a nice little island of LGBT bliss immediately south and east of City Hall, including one of the most LGBT-friendly urban-setting hotels (Loew's) about two blocks away. I'll say roughly five-to-ten major city blocks in either direction and you're good. But step one block across the street in any direction and you've just landed in "Homopohobe-or-DL-phia."

Just having such an gayborhood island to speak of probably disqualifies my hometown from worst-city-in North America status. (Worse places may well be seen as "villages" by the more metropolis-oriented folk among us, because of the cities' size, and therefore don't count in their eyes) But the positive attytoods are very much boxed into a 10x10 space there, and it's not hard to see where the Philly votes are coming from. There are also the New Hope (Pa.) and Rehoboth Beach (Del.) meccas that you can travel to from there by car, but within the city the routine expressions of Brotherly Shove are the norm.

seconded. you just had to hike up a bit, and not open the doors to the other bars with scantily clad girls sitting down and staring at you... now that was awkward..

Anywhere in Iran. They decapitate gays.

Or hang them.

I thought under Sharia they bury them up the head and stone them to death?

BananaSucker saidWhich is the city of homophobias?

I think its Seoul, South Korea.

I was there for few days....god I was shocked.

It's not that people were bad,

but they seemed really hate gay people.

Wow....so is the city of brotherly love a euphemism for the city of brotherly love, as long as you're not gay?

Iran is particularly bad having executed more than 4,000 people charged with homosexual acts since 1979. Source: http://www.vexen.co.uk/religion/homosexuality.html#Islam

makeumyne saidI had a great time in Seoul, met some great gay guys and the odd marine. Fun gay bars - even during the week when they were pretty empty - and I don't even like gay bars that much.

The only city that I have been really worried in was Xi'an in China, but I think that was mainly in my head. The local gays weren't worried about being openly gay.

Xi'an? Really? That must have been in your head because that is the most uninhibited town I went to in China. Once they are off work they go nuts.

Philly is by no means the worst, dum-dum. How can you say that without laughing at yourself? Would you really judge an entire city by your personal experience?

Antonomad I am not sure if this comment comes from a bad experience you may have had in Albania or perhaps it's a racial issue as I know Serbians and Albanians don't have friendly relations.

However, you will be suprised to know...

Homosexuality is legal in Albania and the country is actually debating gay marriage.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBT_rights_in_Albania

Not bad for the most backward place on Earth.

San Diego is bad if you drive anything less than a BMW, and can't be described as a muscular twink, and tuned to be attracted to western European guys. Extremely Cliquish.

The natives have had too much sun exposure. So, if you're tuned to notice skin damage, it's bad.

I've gotten more enjoyment visiting LA.

Seattle is a gay friendly city full of unfriendly gays.

Everett, WA is a gay friendly city but gays go down to Seattle for social events through about 30 miles of traffic.

I always thought of going back to Chicago, Boston, or Denver.

Time to name and shame.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBT_rights_by_country_or_territory

Beyond the usual rabble of states where human rights for everyone is an issue, there's perhaps some places you wouldn't expect-

Singapore, the gem of South East Asia and brimming with all things modern = a prison for gays and democracy

Malaysia - Aiming to join the First World imprisons and whips gays.

Remember your consumer choices, particularly in state owned enterprises such as airlines in the case of Singapore, Malaysia and most Middle Eastern carriers are funding governments that imprison, abuse or murder gay people.

Spend your money wisely.

It's not all bad though

Nepal - Gay marriage approved.

Taiwan - Gay marriage on the cards.

Colombia - Gay marriage on the way.

Australia - ?????????

OldGeezer saidSurprised I guess. I'd think you'd pick just about any city in the middle east, but gay folks probably don't live long enough to talk about it.

and most of Africa.
However I maybe moving to Dubai soon (for a job) and I was told I was fine as long as I go back in the closet. "They don't care about it, they just don't want to see it." Underground gay scene and the whole nine.
