I don't have a problem with poking fun at a formulaic chain restaurant like Olive Garden, even though they contribute thousands to our HIV/AIDS SMART Ride to Key West. They feed over 500 people for free the night before the ride, at a "pasta feast" to load the riders on carbs.

But those stereotypical slams against Italians do offend me greatly. My partner is Italian, as was my late partner. This past Saturday I had a dinner party here, and 5 of those at the table were pure Italian, myself the only non-Italian.

And never in my life have I seen the behavior in real life portrayed of Italians in this clip. I'm not sure why this thread was put here, but I find it insulting beyond words. I'd like to see it pulled.

This was simply an over-played stereotype of Italian-Americans by Mad TV, which was known for its biting humor and ability to 'offend' all groups, allowing us to laugh at ourselves. Mad TV made fun of Bill Clinton, G.W. Bush, Barbara Streisand, Whitney Houston, Shakira, Mariah Carey, and many other people.

I was going to post the clip of the two cute straight men kissing each other numerous times, but I don't know if I should now.

If you have a friend that refuses to go to any other restaurant because Olive Garden has such amazing bread sticks(like the kind you can get at the grocery store) you would make fun of it too. I love how Will And Grace made fun of it as a straighties place and called it the Onion Garden.

Sounds like it's a decent company, but I do tend to try to give my money to local restaurants that buy their produce, etc, locally.

You really need to do us all a favor and get over yourself. This wasn't even that bad at all as far as stereotyping goes. As someone like myself who is Half Black & German I've heard far worse,so please icon_rolleyes.gif

The commercial is not even funny, just very annoying. That grandmother and the whore bag granddaughter just grate the nerves. I feel like telling them to shut up. However, I didn't watch all of the video so there may have been something funny I missed at the end.

Olive Garden is an OK restaurant. The food isn't bad, but my wife can cook just as well if not better. We also make better pizzas at home from scratch.

MuchMoreThanMuscle saidNot sure why people hate on Olive Garden. I have eaten there maybe three times in my life and it was not that bad. I live in Chicago so there really is not one in the city unless I go west toward the airport.

That Italian skit was not all that funny. I found it annoying, actually.

I thought the QVC - Plus size fashion skit was much funnier.

I looked it up and nearly died laughing at the end.

For someone who is "Semi-Blueblooded, Almost-Aristocrat..." according to your RJ Profile, you evidently didn't have the benefit of the finer schools that might have taught you some English spelling skills. It's "censorship" in case you weren't aware. Now it's my turn with the rolling-eyes emoticon. icon_rolleyes.gif

commoncoll saidOlive Garden is an OK restaurant. The food isn't bad, but my wife can cook just as well if not better. We also make better pizzas at home from scratch.

My late partner, who was Italian as my current partner is, was likewise an excellent cook. And when he lived in Houston, Texas, he wouldn't dream of going to an Olive Garden. For Italian food we went to small speciality places, or he cooked at home.

But then we moved back to North Dakota, where I had been living before I met him. Don't ask me why he wanted to do that, not my idea. But there were no good Italian restaurants in Fargo, just national chains like Olive Garden.

But then I learned from a university economics professor that Fargo was used as a training ground for the management of national restaurant chains from all over the US. Seems Fargo has one of the highest ratios of restaurant goers in the US for its population, and their tastes are very reflective of the rest of the US.

So new dishes are tried out there first, their best managers are sent there, and the restaurants are closely monitored by the national management. In Fargo? Who would have guessed?

So we went to the Fargo Olive Garden, and my late partner said it was superb. Not only that, but when I spoke to the manager, he agreed to sell us uncooked mussels direct, which were much better quality than we could get from our local supermarket.

And as I said, Olive Garden is a major sponsor of our HIV/AIDS SMART Ride to Key West. So we go to our one here, and even my Italian (Sicilian actually) partner rates their food highly. All chain restaurants are variable by location, but our Olive Garden here is actually quite good.

Are you perhaps confusing Italians with Italian-Americans? Because this skit parodies the latter. Italians and Italian-Americans are two completely different species.

As an aside, I love my adopted mamma italiana's cooking icon_biggrin.gif Each time I stay at my friend's house in Italy, his mum brings up the best pasta, pizza, salads, gelati, stuffed zucchini flowers and pastries, that no restaurant could ever compare.

Oh, I saw it all. Anyone here who knows me is aware I miss very little. And I nailed you pretty quick. Pretentious without substance. I see it fairly often. Blue-blooded aristocrat indeed! Does that comment belong in your RJ Profile?

Who the HELL in the US today claims to be a "semi-Aristocrat'? That is contrary to everything the US stands for. Before you say the world has passed me by, I think you should examine your own attitude that is still mired in concepts of aristocracy and being a blue-blood from past centuries. Totally obsolete for the US in the 21st Century.
