    Why a flame war?

I haven't seen it yet, but yet I'm a not knowledgeable enough fan of Ayn Rand. A Soviet Monica conservative friend of mine who is a PhD in economics highly suggested that I see it. I was just wondering if anyone else had seen it and recommends it.

I'm on different forums. And whenever Ayn Rand and Atlas Shrugged comes up, it usually turns into political bickering. So I guess we'll wait and see how things go here. icon_wink.gif

Seen it yet? Wasn't it filmed about 50 plus years ago with Patricia Neal?

Ayn Rand was a "trickle down" social commentator that was popular 20+ years ago for about 15 minutes.
Her theories have mostly been blown to hell, basically because they all center around people being selfish enough to only care about themselves and no one else. This has great appeal to the current GOP and TEA parties, but is antithetical to what most people perceive as a livable society. Thus, sadly, she is making a sort of comeback. Kind of like the fascination that people have with Nazis every once in a while.
The "me" decade came and went. What we were left with were the people that grew up, or didn't grow up, thinking that they could go through life being utterly self absorbed, snooty, loners. Some of them are gay. No surprise there.
Those people that actually buy into this theory and practice it, usually end up alone, unloved, and rather unattractive. Like Ayn Rand, they see no value in being social, having empathy, compassion, or sharing. Even trying to make yourself look good for someone else is a waste of time. Just google her and you'll get my point. Like rats on a sinking ship, they will climb anyone's back for a few extra seconds of air.
Ayn Rand is a great excuse for unbridled wealth accumulation and not feeling any remorse as you pass by the homeless, or step over someone's cold dead body on the street.
Since the GOP has taken the stand that tax breaks for the wealthy and corporate tax loopholes are more important than social programs or balancing the budget, I'm sure there will be even more interest than usual in Ayn Rand and "Atlas Shrugged", even if it is by the 2% of the people that control 94% of the non-housing generated wealth in the US.
The natural result of Rand's theories has turned out to be socialism, as the majority of serfs finally get fed up with supporting the wealthy and priveleged few. But they don't like to discuss that, so I'm sure it's not in the movie.
Class warfare isn't pretty. Ask a French king. Or a Republican.

What doesn't turn into a bunch of bickering regardless of topic? I get compared to a nazi at least once a day around here. I lived in Soviet Monica for the last 15 years of my 30 years in LA so I’m used to it. However, once the name calling starts, any respect whatsoever that I have for their opinion is gone so let the battle begin.

I don't know all that much about Ayn Rand, but I remember this really precocious gay Asian boy who was going to UCLA school of economics from years back who was really a huge fan of hers so I then looked at her a little. Then this movie came out and libertarian / conservative friends of mine in addition to one I mentioned above have suggested that I see it. Plus, I figured that if the left hates it then it’s something I will find worthwhile seeing. And you know – the left just doesn’t disagree – they hate and everyone on the other side is evil.

I don't see movies so I didn't know a thing about it until one of my LA friends mentioned it. I know of the book and that it was written I think in 1957. I never read the book either. I'll probably never get around to seeing it.

"Soviet Monica"??? I suppose yu could make a hair-splitting argument that this is not name calling, and thereby absolve yourself of what you accuse the left of doing. But you might want to look at why you get compared to a nazi.

    Just sayin'

Yeah, you got it. Look, I'm used to the hate, hysteria, emotion, ad hominem attacks, and etc. from the left. Its simply what you do if you don’t have a cogent argument. The more hating from the left I get – the surer I am that I’m on the right path.

I'd like to see Hollywood make a new film version of 'The Fountainhead,' the book was quite inspirational to me albeit very long.

No, this is why you get hated on, not your silly politics. There are a lot of conservatives here who don't get hated on. It's just the truculent loudmouths who get it.
Like just about 100% of the lefties?

"There are a lot of conservatives here who don't get hated on."

    They don't? That's not what I've read

Keep hating - fine by me.
