I am usually into games with nice, thick, convoluted plots + character development.

The Mortal Kombat franchise has a classical plot (especially the first three editions).

The Final Fantasies usually have very good plots (FFVII comes to mind. FFVIII also)

So what games did you play and found out they have well developed characters and appealing storylines?

there are tons, few that come in mind for me are

    1.Tales of the Abyss,great characters,good story,game play is alright(JRPG btw)
2.Deus Ex the first one, though the third installment looks pretty epic icon_cool.gif
    3.Kingdom Hearts (duh)
4.Syphon Filter, the first one only, interesting story line
5.MGS,pretty much all of them are pretty badass confusing at times

Kingdom Hearts and The FF Series are always good, I like the somewhat loose plot in Borderlands

KH I usually skipped the cut scenes or took piss during the unskippable ones. The game was fun as hell to play but not a fan of drawn out cut scenes.

I really enjoyed the story of uncharted, very fun game.

Mass effect 1+2, resident evil, Dead Rising, Fallout games are all great.

Im also a huge nerd, and like Neverwinter nights 2, still working on the expansions.

Xenogears is by far my favorite when it comes to plot and characters.

Vagrant Story follows up because it's an in-depth dungeon crawler.

Starcraft/Starcraft 2 have amazing stories, plots, and character development.

Chrono Trigger/Chrono Cross were incredibly in-depth. The storyline, multiple character development, and hell...a frog with the Masamune? You can't go wrong there.

Legend of Dragoon is also a great storyline as well.

Final Fantasy Tactics is also incredible. Well worth the hours upon hours of gameplay just to see your main character dual-weild morning stars and kick the final boss' ass solo in under 3 turns. Plus Cloud Strife from FF7 is a secret character complete with his limit-breaks.

To summarize, just about anything from Squaresoft/Square-Enix, and Blizzard is gonna do everything but disappoint.

I agree with Silent Hill being story-driven with deep symbolism.

Concerning Kingdom Hearts, I was shocked to see it mentioned this much. I mean really? icon_biggrin.gif

Any video game that has Goofy in it is automatically disqualified plot-wise.

I heard a lot of good things about Chrono Trigger also but haven't played it when it came out.

As someone else mentioned, Silent Hill games have great plots (the first three anyway) with a lot of symbolism. My favorite is Silent Hill 2. Fantastic plot.

Other than that, I'd highly recommend Alan Wake if you want a good plot. That game will have you talking and thinking for days after you beat it.

    Soulbringer

Played it in my early teens, everything you could ask for in an RPG. It has it's flaws, but sometimes the BEST games do.

Persona 2: Innocent sin, Persona 2: Eternal Punishment are just damn amazing. Innocent sin has an English translation so It's finally playable. I guess a spear of destiny wielding Hitler is too much for censors. My favorite game of all time.
