HELP!...These HICCUPS won't stop!

    I got them Sunday night 4-24-2011, around 9pm and they have lasted through sleep, and all day at work and I am getting worried.

    I have done the holding your breath, drinking upside down, sugar, breathing into a bag, eating sour, eating spicy hot, milk, foods....antacids, etc...all the standard folk remedies and nothing has worked.....this is ridiculous and annoying.... any other ideas?icon_eek.gificon_sad.gif

    seriously, a short in the vagus nerve, can be debilitating. needs reset: find a quite place and laugh. laugh you ass off, laugh till your sides hurts. a good sneeze can do it too.
    It happens to my partner from time to time; not, really sure why. I smack him on the back hard enough to see my hand print later when I'm apologizing.

    Thanks guys!..........I really like Paul's approach here so far! Will try sex soon! Hell!...At this point, I'd bottom if it would stop these hiccups!

    I still have them....and now I am going to the gym to lift and run....should be interesting.......although, come to think of it they started last night in the gym after I had finished my normal 12 mile par-course run/calisthenics and then row for 12000 meters...started in the sauna after the pool and hot tub......maybe more "hair of the dog"?...so to speak, will stop it......

    .....when I had my bariatric surgery, they severed the vagas nerve...part of why weight loss surgery works.....

    The only thing that ever works for me you mentioned.. sugar.. I take about a tablespoon of sugar in my mouth and let it ever so slowly slowly dissolve. Maybe two and they're gone. Were you doing it that way?

    Shoot a doubles glass of straight lemon juice. A bartender showed me that once, it totally worked. Real pain in the ass those hiccoughs.

    Try gaging yourself. The vagus nerve that is responsible for the hiccups also controls your gag reflex. It worked for me the other day.

    Stick your finger down your throat until you gag or swallowa teaspoon of sugar and make yourself gag. The whole point is to stimulate the gag reflex that will short out your nervous system and stop the spastic hiccups.

    Amen... Don't come to a forum for possible health problems (not to diminish the value of everyone's advice on here but you're not doctors and even if you are, you can't see this person).

    OMG Im so sorry this happen to you. I once had this, and it wouldnt stop for like 15 16 hours straight. At first it was annoying but then it hurt so much. I was in so much pain and it was 2 days before my visa interview, I was panicking. But anyway I tried swallowing sugar, it helped but only for a short period of times, drank tons of water - no luck, asked my cousins to scared me spontaneously - that was fun but didnt help either. Ended up to a doctor, took some pills, I had no idea how that would help and it didnt.

    SO my dad took me to a Acupuncture clinic where they place needles all over your body or face or whatever. I think the fact the guy brought out a jar of like 100 needles scared me and somehow the hiccup stopped.

    BTW i learned a trick, it calls 30sec. As soon as you start hiccuping, take a deep deep breath, hold it till you bust out then repeat it for 2 or 3 more times.

    Just got home from the gym and they seem to be GONE!...They have stopped.... so far it has been about an hour!...not sure when they stopped, but I had a really good workout! Lifted , rowed and ran on the treadmill and then I noticed they had stopped! YES!.....icon_biggrin.gif

    Good to hear...wow...I have never heard of anyone having hickups for more than a few minutes...not alone for hours on end. Thanks for the update. I have heard that it is not generally dangerous but I would think it would be pretty annoying.

    I remember couple years back I had fever and hiccups lasted on and off for several days. The littlest thing would trigger it right back up. I was trying honey, peanut butter, everything. But until I took care of the cough the hiccups would not go away (which involved going to the doctor LOL)

    The most plausible and common cause for hiccups is a muscle spasm in the region where your diaphragm is. To deal with a spasm you need to use direct pressure to force the fast-twitch muscle fibers to stop.

    The best way is to take a deep breath, as much air as you can get. Once you hit the peak of your breath, close your mouth and swallow the air that remains in your mouth. This adds more pressure to the fibers that are spasming. Just hold the breath as long as you can then exhale when need be.

    For persistent hiccups, repeat it again. I've never had to do this more than twice to get rid of em.

    Swallowing granulated sugar, hard bread, or peanut butter
    Drinking from opposite side of glass
    Catheter or cotton swab stimulation of nasooropharynx
    Initiate gag reflex
    Forceable traction on the tongue
    Biting on a lemon
    Fright
    Noxious odors (inhaling ammonia)
    Pressing on the eyeballs
    Pulling knees to chest or leaning forward to compress the chest
