    EDITED for clarity:
Yes, we have that mental tool to use, but we should know WHEN and WHERE to use it. There is a difference.

That's just like saying, I have a penis, therefore I will insert it into every hole I see... no ... you have to know when and where to use it.

Same thing with generalizing... there are certain limits to it and when you cross that line, what becomes beneficial to you, becomes condescending towards someone else.

    ---------------------

    Anyways, purpose of this thread:
To inform the community about what generalizing is and why it is sometimes* wrong.

    Reason for posting this thread:
Been seeing too many generalizations going on.

Outcome of this thread that I hope to see:
The number of generalizations will be reduced.

    Core of the post:
    Taken from www.experienceproject.com:

"Generalizing is just another form of discrimination and prejudice. If you judge a person due to, say, religion, and say something like "All Muslims are terrorists," you are in fact making a prejudiced statement because you are not actually acquainted with all Muslims and have no real basis for making that statement. In addition, people who swap the word "prejudice" with "generalization" usually rationalize their behavior and never make any real effort to learn anything about the people they are judging.''

''Using general language, saying 'all' or 'every' when you know it's not true, for comic effect or maybe because of carelessness, can be harmful. In some ways, it's a lie.''

Some examples of generalizing that I have found on RJ - Can you state reasons as to why the following are wrong? (Obviously they are wrong...it is a rhetorical question - just answer it in your head):

''All gay men separate sex and love...''
    ''All gay men are feminine...''
    ''All gay men are cheaters...''
''All short gay men are bottoms...''
''All tall gay men are tops...''
''All masculine gay men are tops...''
''All feminine gay men are bottoms...''
    ''All gay men are sluts...''
''All non-white gay men idolize white men...''
''All gay black men are feminine...''
''Every young gay man wants a sugar daddy...''

I can go on and on with the amount of generalizations I have seen on RJ... Those above were just a few...

    TL;DR

Don't generalize... if you do, expect to get flamed.
No one wants to be labelled as something they are not.

So, don't generalize! It makes you look foolish!

    * = Thanks to some people who have made it clear that sometimes generalizing can be a good thing... however, for the statements in quotations above, they are NEVER a good thing.

That barrage of facepalms was due to the fact that I already made this thread and nobody cares.

Where... I never saw you make a thread about generalizations and why they are wrong... I saw threads that relate to some points in my OP (such as gender identity etc... ) which I applaud you for.

That's a very generalized thing to say. It's not always wrong.

So if no one cares, it should not be said right?

    Great statement Andrew! icon_rolleyes.gif

"So if no one cares, it should not be said right?"

    We care, so share.

    and

There are over 270,000 profiles on this site. How many are posting? So there's the unknown of the great silent but listening (well, reading) majority on RJ (although who knows what goes on in chat, lol).

I like this too! I agree we should do better at avoiding generalizations. If we took the time to actually learn about things more or educate ourselves we could learn and remove assumptions that prevent us from seeing the truth. I can give a perfect example that isn't necessarily gay but something I experienced and learned from. In California, or at least how the media is presented to me, Anything in the mid west seems or portrayed by the media as underdeveloped, and a place where a bunch of farmers spend all day feeding cows. Until I went to one of these places and realized its actually very current. They just have a smaller population than California and their cities are quite nice.

Another example, a friend on RJ here is from an Arab country and I believed the nation to be very third world and underpriviliged. But that's what the media and news wishes to show us. Just the bad things. If we actually saw the truth, we'd have a better understanding of our surroundings. He described his city which was nothing like I thought it was. I was expecting to hear he lived in a desert which yes he does, but I was assuming a bunch of sand for miles. I was wrong. Just saying we should learn to remove our generalizations on any level. =)
