We've all encountered them, perhaps introduced by a friend, or said hi to a stranger at a bar, struck up a conversation, politely enough, only to realise this person is stupid. Not just a little ignorant, but completely utterly beyond any hope.
    D-U-M
(yeah no silent B, they wouldnt' get it anyhow if you added it, so why waste your time?)

What red flags make you shut down? Signs that let you know someone's lack of intelligence will irritate you more than the friendship is worth...
Or is it another personality trait entirely that you just have no patience or interest in dealing with...

For me? Someone who lacks simple conversation skills, like understanding a comparison...

Oh yeah, and if someone's only topic of conversation is themselves, I tend to glaze over pretty quickly also!

Not many...and the few I do I know from other venues, so it wasn't an issue (strange number of military men who end up being flight attendants).

If only life were that easy...although I'm sure what bothers me, others wouldnt' even notice, and vice versa...then we'd all end up in ball gags, and what sort of mad world has that much rubber?

Lack of intelligence is not disqualifying, so long as it is not accompanied by an overdeveloped sense of self-importance. I find that most disconcerting, but find it more prevalent in the virtual space than in the real world.

Unless, of course, they are so dum it is like talking to a box of rocks. In that case I might rather befriend the box of rocks as it will be easier to maintain.

I've never considered that issue (energy and effort required for friendship maintenance), but now you brought it up...I'll take the box of rocks anyday. (love that phrase)

TheGuyNextDoor saidI'm always a little shocked on RJ when I get a note from someone... starts out nice and simple. In time, you become friends and they talk about passing their Algebra 2 test with a solid B, but their grammar and spelling is a total train wreck. Almost "Deliverence" country fried lingo. I'm alway's left with.. how the hell are you almost a Senior in college with that lack of basic english? Oh well.. takes all kinds.

I get a deer in the headlights look when anyone who hasn't taken Calculus as a college freshmen (or CLEP'd it to be fair) approaches me.
    naw just kidding

So where do you draw the line? Like you can put up with the bad spelling and such, but does it ever reach a point where you just end things...?

You have no idea. I teach a class to advanced undergrads and if I get a dime for catching every little grammatical error I'd be richer than Donald Trump. Kids these days don't know how to write. I will actually see things like "btw" on a formal essay!

MuchMoreThanMuscle saidHonestly, you bitches have to whine and be so judgmental against someone you deem as stupid? What makes any one of you an authority on someone's intelligence level.
Poorly educated and "dum"b are also not one in the same.
Red flags that make me shut down are people who arrogantly assume they are better than others are those who are simply not very nice.
Liars, bullshitters, troublemakers and manipulators are also red flags for me.

    BEST response yet!!!

LOL! I read your original post with the vocabulary stuff. It's comical! I guess you didn't want some random guy start reading the GRE vocabulary section just to get you into the sack. So you deleted it. Oh!......ooops. icon_redface.gificon_lol.gif

Actually, I like em dumb, blond, and muscular. icon_lol.gif

But seriously, I guess it depends on you and the other person. I've met a few guys that could be classified as "dum" but it wasn't an irritating experience. I just had to put a little more effort into getting the conversation going. Once you find out what makes them tick, it's pretty easy to engage in some type of conversation.

Yes, that fascinating and ever-debated question "Creatine or Hydroxycut?"
