Will we, as a country, EVER be able to have a civilized, adult discussion about sexuality, race, politics, war, and religion and any other hot button issue? I still hope for that day but I've been losing hope in this for years.

I strongly doubt it. There is too little thoughtful education, and too high a reward for going off the deep end. I love this country, but I fear that it's over.

Not in this life with the religious, far right and fanatics who will not negotiate or compromise while insisting that they are always right and that some damned god or ideology, says they are right so no need for compromise. Two good examples here on RJ are JockFever and Ceaserea4, just try having a give and take conversation with either of those two and what other conclusion can anyone come to?

Plain talk, but to a great degree the base of the problem.

Lets face harsh reality. subjects like politics, religion, sexuality, race etc. are always going to be extremely volatile issues because everyone has very strong opinions regarding these issues. Americans and even a growing number of people in other countries are just not willing to compromise. It is their way or the highway without question. On here, guys like Rickrick91, Caesarea4 and many of the extremist liberal hens are an outstanding example of not being civil in their dealings with other people.

    HAHAHA!
You're the one with the proven track record of launching ugly rabid foaming at the mouth personal attacks on others, and gross intolerance of other points of view.
And with your comment above - yet again - you can't post a comment without personally attacking fellow RJ members.

Your anger issues and intolerance have been displayed here on the Forums over and over again!
When it comes to childish name-calling - you're one of the least civil posters here on RJ.

Giggles now that truth is going to upset a few, so there is now going to be revenge.

Many people here have to let go of their insecurities and stop playing the victims, and allow freedom of speech, for this to ever happen. But as you see, as a group they pack like wolves, or put their 4x4 in a circle, wherever they feel incecure.

"Lets face harsh reality. subjects like politics, religion, sexuality, race etc. are always going to be extremely volatile issues because everyone has very strong opinions regarding these issues."

True, but even these things can be discussed by rational people with a degree of courtesy and restraint - though that takes maturity and self-control. The fact is, we're all in it together, and no useful decision can be made that isn't to some extent a compromise: that's the reality of politics and civility. Put another way, I have to get along with my neighbors, or we both make life hell for eachother, and it's impertinent of me to tell them how they have to live.

Simply to wash one's hands of it and say it's inevitable is either to give up, or to take a side and defend it tooth and nail - neither a very useful course of action in the larger picture. Politics (and sex) have, as you say, always been volatile, but there have been times when people have been more prepared to work together to find a way both can live with, and more prepared to enter into substantive debate. The polarized garbage and lies and emotion we get today are at a new level of futility, and it's hurting our country.

From an outsider's point of view American politics is kind of like watching a freak accident; it's disturbing and horrible in many ways yet strangely fascinating. The rethorics and propaganda used by fairly mainstream politicians in the US is something only the extreme (and I mean really extreme) fringe parties would use where I live. Kinda scary considering how powerful a nation the US is.

Very true. Not to mention that words like "liberal", "socialism", and "communist" appear to have no inherent meaning in the US. icon_rolleyes.gif

    I know what you mean.

Just recently presidential candidate Mitt Romney talked metaphorically about hanging President Obama. I thought it was such an ugly way to express your discontent with someone. Even after there was a national discussion about violent rhetoric in politics because of the shooting in Arizona, Mitt Romney says something like this.

OH PALEEEEEESE !!! Re-read your discourse of a week ago or so with Christian on the topic about the Teenagers who murdered the Fogel Family. (I believe that's the one)

You expose your change the subject, then accuse your opposition of changing the subject tactic, You refuse to respond to his pertinent Questions when they point out holes in your Propaganda, then accuse him of not answering questions. LMAO !!!, there's more of your typical circular conversational tactics there that we pointed out, then when you finally saw that you were caught up with, you took off to other topics spreading more of your propaganda. A few days later you came back and what did you write? Of all the "SHITZPAH" !!! you wrote to Christian. Maybe Christian can discuss the topic now, he couldn't the other day because "Christian was having a bad day". OH MY GOD !!! did you ever show your ass that time !!! LOL !!! So if you want an example of LEERON's (C4's) tactics, please do take a read and see for yourself, because you have to read it to believe it !!!

UUUUUH !! you missed the point, did you take a look at the above example ? if you had you'd know that Pot meet Kettle doesn't fit.

but now if I were saying that I wasn't awful toward C4, then yes pot meet kettle would fit perfectly, because I do give him hell for his being 'awful' !! I'll certainly claim my actions on that one, but no, I don't use his propaganda tactics above, not by any stretch.

No thank you. Perhaps you missed the smilies. I was attempting to reach polite and humorous common ground with someone with whom I disagree politically but with whom I believe I might have some interesting mutual conversations in the future. I could be wrong, but am hopeful. You know, making a thoughtful point, listening to an intelligent response, and so forth. You should try it sometime! It's quite stimulating.
