Sleep Issues

    Sleep Apnea - never heard of it until I went through a sleep study and found out that I was never entering REM sleep and that my airway was closing up 50 times per hour. Now I'm on a CPAP machine with a mask that keeps the air flowing and treats the apnea.

    Because of my high stress level job and personal life, I take Ambien CR and Lunesta alternately to try to stay asleep but can only get about 6 1/2 hours sleep each night. I take Klonopin about 3 hours before bedtime to lower anxiety to help the Ambien or Lunesta work better to little avail.

    Any body have have any suggestions on anything else I can do?

    Google "sleep hygiene" for tips on what to do before going to bed to put your body and mind into a state for normal circadian rhythm.

    Cardio and weight training are good for working out stress and anxiety.

    Alprazolam also works before bed in lieu of zolpidem (Ambien) or Lunesta.

    Looked at your profile. Do what you can to lose any unnecessary weight. Excess weight can exacerbate the apnea.

    Consider your diet as well. Look to see if you are eating any kinds of foods which have natural stimulants in them. Avoid these later in the day.

    That's a lot of medication to take just to get to sleep my friend.

    I disagree with the previous poster about taking Alprazolam. It might work better but for unknown reasons its addictive potential is much higher and therefore outweighs the benefits.

    You are already taking the first and second line of treatment. I would consider starting you on Ramelteon but that primarily helps with people who have difficulty falling asleep (vs or including staying asleep).

    This is also the course for someone with primary insomnia. You have sleep apnea, so if you can get the sleep apnea treated you should be able to sleep much better. cPAP is a start but alcohol, smoking and weight issues should be considered the true primary treatment for this.

    Medicating yourself to sleep every night even for 6.5 hours is not anywhere near as good as gettin 6.5 hours unmedicated sleep.

    In the meantime, there are other medications that you can try but you may need a psychiatrist to prescribe them. I'm not sure if your GP is going to be comfortable prescribing the third line of treatment for you.

    Both of these about a half hour before bed:

    1 Valerian Root tablet
    1 L-Arginine tablet

    Right before bed...

    2 to 3 ZMA Tech tabs by BodyTech.

    I have been doing this regimen for over a month as I couldn't get into deep-sleep and now I sleep through the night. icon_biggrin.gif

    Also, I cut down on drinking coffee. I do drink about 12 green tea bags a day. I stop all caffeine around 2pm.

    Very interesting. May I ask the qualifications of the respondents? You sound knowledgeable and I have some problems with sleeping and the CPAP.

    OP, are you a diabetic? I have just recently read that about a third of diabetics have sleep apnea. It is a quirky condition, but using the mask apparently provides cardio benefits in adition to helping with sleep per se. Since the better sleep you get, the more you dream, I use that as a sort of gage. It has aken me a long time to adjust. Keep at it. It will heop, though it sounds like you have lots of other things to deal with also. The stress must be a big factor. Good luck.

    Nothing too formal. I'm just well read in Psychiatry, neuroscience, biology and psychology. My knowledge in each is probably equivillant to a resident and I can hold my water with the best of attending physicains (I work with them) in each of those fields icon_razz.gif

    I'm going to school for (neuro)psychology. I pretty much just rephrased the national sleep disorders standards of care in my post.

    The cPAP can take some time to get used to but it sounds like the Op has more problems with the anxiety of getting to sleep than the sleep itself but I could be wrong. Psychotherapy is always an option for this type of anxiety.

    Thanks, Adam. Sleep has become one of my trials in the last coupleof years. In spite of the CPAP, I still can't get a really good night's rest. Part of it is the diabetes getting me up to pee, but there is something else there, too. I imagine I should live a better life, but that would be a lot of work.

    There must be more guys out there with these problems. Comments?

    Medical Acupuncture - proven to help, with no side effects.
