An endless hotbed of anti-gay hatred and ignorance

I came across an article the other day talking about the tragic shooting of 15-year-old Lawrence King because he was openly gay. The article was titled Kids openly gay earlier than ever.

In doing some Google searches for related stories, I came across one of the most vitriolic and ignorant collections of hate speech I've ever found on the internet. I'm a big proponent of giving people enough rope to hang themselves, so listed below, for your amusement, shock, bewilderment, etc. is a selection of the comments posted on Freerepublic.com about the article mentioned above.

    Discuss:

    - "The homosexual community wants children to declare themselves homosexual so they can then get the right of consent lowered so they can legally have sex with them. Homosexuals must recruit because their group is dying from aids and they are insatiable and must have “New Meat”. The average homosexual male has over 700 sex partners in their lifetime."

    - "I doubt that many are actually feeling homosexual tendencies but it is so celebrated these days that they want to be thought of as ‘special’. Very destructive to our culture."

    - "If homosexuals are “born that way,” then a person cannot be recruited into it. So maybe it’s not inborn, but a choice. Acting on it is certainly a choice, just as acting on adulterous or pedophiliac or bestial desires would be choices."

    - For years they have molested kids and the fragile human psyche minimizes the attack by normalizing it. The real change has been that people have been willing to accept that molesting is simply “helping them come to grips with their sexuality”.

    - "The boy in question knowingly made an unwelcome sexual advance at a heterosexual boy. This used to be known as sexual harassment except gays are allowed to recruit and taunt heteros."

    - "I'm not surprised. Kids will do just about anything they are encouraged to do and applauded for. If we declared cannibalism to be an identity and gave its practitioners special rights and protections in schools, they'd be doing that too."

    - "Sexuality is a learned behavoir. As to what level of pervertion you take that behavoir to is another story."

These were the comments that were deemed appropriately mild enough to stay on the site. Several others were apparently much worse and were removed by the moderators.

These shitheads come out of the woodwork whenever a gay interest article is posted in mainstream news sites.

I've learned to ignore them. icon_sad.gif My replies are usually those deleted by mods too. Hehe

I remember once my dad who is not really a super intellectual person pointed out to me how in a pack of dogs, the smaller one or the one deemed as weaker is subject to attack. Once attacked then all the others join in on the attack.

So a lot of the attacks on queers is an attempt to fit in "securely" with the majority. So I think a lot of this is a sort of pack mentality.

What is the solution? The Dali Lama said once that the way to defeat an enemy is to make him your friend. I think if people found out that someone they love or even really like or look up to is Gay, it would defuse some of the group. I hate to say it but I think the pressure is on Gay people to be "better" than others in terms of being on a moral high ground. By that I mean showing the good we can contribute to society and just being plain "nice"

Also just exposing the injustices against gay people to gain the sympathies of the public is good.

Of course being recognized as good people by people in political power helps also.

Here we see an example of the "line crossed" between
people who "champion a cause" and those who are mentally ill. Fred Phelps would fit into the same category.

I wouldn't take what these idiots have to say as reflective of people with intelligence - I understand this is all online, but just look at their grammar. Last time I checked it was 'perversion,' not 'pervertion.'

Mostly people like this just end up swaying people to the exact opposite side of their argument because of their blatant ignorance.

I think that's very true. I dug around on that site a little bit more and found one comment that made me think the same thing.

Regarding Iran hanging two teenage boys for homosexuality, someone posted something along the lines of "Well, that's one thing where the taliban and I agree. They're right on this one."

I thought, seriously, how can someone say something like that. Are there really people in America who would support executing teenagers for homosexuality?

Probably not. They're keyboard commandos like a lot of people there seem to be. But still, just that someone would say that really makes anti-gay bigotry show it's true colors. I think mainstream America finds extremism like that very distasteful and wrong.

700? LOL LOL. I wish that were true......700? It's not impossible but come on.

Stuff like this is just depressing. That kid should never have lost his life. Sadly many of us have to endure this kind of ignorance everyday. And what makes it worst is that they are comfortable with it.

I'm 50 years old, I've been at it for quite awhile.

I think it's sad that they label us as pediphiles looking for "New Meat". They obviously fail to realize that there's plenty of meat on the table already. It displays a lot of assumptions and misconceptions on the part of "FreeRepublic". Then again, to get a good readership, one must sensationalize stuff, that's just human nature and the American media.

Its hard to hear but this type of mentality is very prevalent in the USA. Alot of people think like that. I once had a client at work that found out I was going to San Francisco on vacation and told me to be sure not to use any of the public toilets in SF because I might get AIDS. I was floored, but just nodded my head and smiled. Not much you can do when someone is that ignorant.

Why give these loons the oxygen of publicity? If you look hard enough, you will find deranged ramblings on any subject you care to mention.
