Employee Prospect During Evening Interview: "Are you Gay"???

So I'm having to add another part time employee. I dont' have to do it very often, the only reason here is that my current assistant of 8 years had back surgery and it looks like her hours are really going to be cut. She'll still be working for me, but greatly reduced.

The ad went in the paper and after reviewing a number of resumes, I've called in a number for interviews. Another assistant sits in on the interviews and I get her observations later.

I called in a guy, probably a little younger than me who was interested in the part time hours in addition to a regular job (which isn't an issue for me, so long as he's responsible and diligent). I asked him a number of questions and at the conclusion, he said he had some questions for me. A couple of them delt with the job description, one about clients and then at the end he looked at my pictures and ask me.... "Are you married?
I was a little stunned. My response was, "I don't think my personal life is anybody's business, especially when applying for a job". He asked, "Well are you gay".. if you are, it isn't a problem" I almost started laughing, but instead I said, "I think the interview is over, thanks for your time". He looked a little surprised and left. My assistant (who knows about me, but we don't really discuss it says, "it was the beagle picture"..... LOL

However I thought the whole thing was a little over the top. Talk about brazen.

Funny... I can only imagine your facial expression. I probably would have said "oh wait, on a scale of 1-10 how appropriate do you think that question was, and oh, what would be the best way to tell you you're definitely not getting the job?"
At least you have a funny story, wish we could get a picture of this kid

It was a weird feeling. It took a second to think of a response in this kind of professional environment.

It would have been completely inappropriate for you to ask him that question. And it is equally inappropriate for him to ask you. You handled it professionally.

How do you say it? "Bye, bye"!!

It seems you handled things professionally.
If he asked if the workplace is gay-friendly, it would be a different matter.

I'm lost how your beagle picture is a gay signal. Is the beagle in drag or a leather daddy? Inquiring minds want to know.

    Those beagles are awesome.

Maybe saying "oh and I like your beagle by the way" might have gotten a better message across.

Agree that he probably hasn't interviewed all that often. I can see how he might have thought he was doing a good thing, but he obviously knows nothing about being appropriate. And especially during an interview?!? Wow. Well, even if he was perfect for the job, you did the right thing.

    So, was he cute?

    Just kidding!

If he said that to his prospective boss, imagine what he'd say to one of your customers! Scary...

...and also amusing and funny. Did you look for hidden cameras after he left?

It almost started to sound like a porn setup, where the eager candidate makes some sexy questions leading to 11 runtime minutes of office tomfoolery.

As much as I understand what he was trying to accomplish, the execution was just completely poor and inappropriate.

Maybe he liked you but I agree it's totally inappropriate.
