why can't people just be happy with their own skin colors.

It never ceases to amaze the lengths that people will go to to lighten or darken their skin. In wester countries, white people are told that being pale is unattractive, and they they should go sit under UVB lamps crisping like fries in a holding tray at mcdonalds. Skin cancer is not worth a little extra color. You guys are fine the way you are.

Meanwhile, Nivea, Garnie and Olay (who sell products that assist in tanning in other markets) tell people in India and east Asia that having any color to their skin is horrible. They push products with mercury and hydroquinone to these people so that they have skin cancer too, and maybe chemical burns if they are really really lucky.

If somebody is telling you that the way you are born is ugly....why would you give them your money?

I love to tan icon_rolleyes.gif I just feel like I look so much better tanned I can't help it. I don't over do it, but I like having the sun kissed skin color that I get.

Skin lightening. . . Ahhh the dilemma. Actually a first sign of age is hyperpigmentation. Just look at someone's hands or neck to find their real age. I don't think there's anything wrong with even skin tone with hydroquinone; never heard of mercury being used.

Hyperpigmentation is the result of sun damage. Skin cancer is the least of my worries, I just don't like touching loose non elastic skin that's been in the sun for years. I'm down with my white skin.

The darker look was "natural" for thousands of years, we practically lived outside after all. Then a fateful but interesting turn of historical events turned "white" into the desirable skin tone and they even went back to deface ancient artwork to make the Greeks look like they were white (think the statue of david).

So our archetype of not being tan, or not being any other color than pasty white has some very strong cultural roots and were it not for culture race itself wouldn't even exist.

My point is that these are all just culturally determined things and to criticize them is fine but just don't pretend like somehow you are above this system. Many of our attributes are culturally determined and it wasn't too long ago that there were plenty of people to argue being gay was one of them.

White/pale people have a much higher chance of getting laid down here, because the local Latinos/Hispanics LOVE white meat. icon_biggrin.gif

Well I do know that some people go overboard with this. I am not so much a tanning bed kind of guy but I had a wreck when I was 18 where I was thrown from the vehicle and slid quite a ways on my back, so when I haven't been in the sun a lot my back has about 3 different shades based on where I lost the most skin.

I just saw a news story this morning that young folks who use tanning beds are something like 75% more likely to develop melanoma over their lives. It's not pretty.

Do you guys know that in Asia everybody avoids the sun like the plague? Most people in East Asia is trying to be pale as possible, and that's including men. The best cosmetic sellers are always the ones with the names like phyto-blanco, whitening, de-coloring, etc. It seems that in America and some other Western nations it's the complete opposite mentality. Beats me.

In America it's not too different for some of the minorities here to want to be as light as possible

I was born with a slightly olive color, but for Mexican standards I am a PALE ASS GHOST. But that's a good thing in Mexico, the lighter you are the better you're perceived, even though for US standards I'm not THAT light skinned. In any case I love my natural tone, and don't feel I need to tan or look lighter either.

Adriodante I like your skin tone though. It has a healthy glow to it and not too dark either. I am starting to think that people want the exact opposite of what they have too much of. Like, people in Canada and northern USA don't get that much sun so they want to be tanned. People living near equator...just want to be as pale as possible. It shows that you are different than others around you, and therefore helps to be perceived better by others. Also, it makes other people jealous of you too! Well, either way if you're in US or in Mexico, your skin tone is gonna be...just awesome. icon_biggrin.gif

@dekiruman. You were in Japan? I didn't know that! Nice new profile pic btw. Love the roses!

I think the difference is historical working conditions. In the west you want to be dark because it is a sign of being rich enough not to have to work, because you have time to laze around in the sun all day if you start white. In asia or latin countries poor people have to work in the sun all day, so rich means you want to be pale because it means you are rich enough to never have to work outside and you can stay inside and laze around in airconditioning.

its all about the money. basically everyone wants to be a rich phillipino

True to a certain extent. Latin gays love the white meat, but lately I've been dickmatized by some of the darker skinned Europeans and South Americans....icon_cool.gif
