I don't know how I missed this but legendary director Jules Dassin and legendary actor Richard Widmark both died recently. They teamed up on one of my all-time favorite movies, "Night and the City," a great noir set in London that was later re-made with Jessica Lange and Robert DeNiro (I think - or was that "The Postman Always Rings Twice?"). Jules Dassin fled to Europe after he was blacklisted in the McCarthy witch hunts - in France, he made the ultimate heist movie "Rififi," which is now being remade starring Al Pacino (yech) in the Jean Gabin role. Richard Widmark was an amazing character actor, most famous for his noir roles in movies like "Kiss of Death" where he pushed an old woman in a wheel chair down the stairs.

The work of Jules Dassin and Richard Widmark has had a huge impact on my life and I'm sorry to see these talents go.

I remember him in the role of Jim Bowie in "The Alamo" with John Wayne. He was in a few westerns too. He was a great actor.
You never see much of the film noir genre anymore.

NJIt was "Postman," John Garfield, Lana Turner and Hume Cronyn. Remake written by Mamet, directed by Rafelson, starred Nicholson and Lange.

No, I just did an imdb search and "Night and the City" was remade with Robert DeNiro and Jessica Lang in 1992:

    http://imdb.com/title/tt0105001/

Postman was a separate remake. And really, the original novel by James M. Cain was the sexiest of all!
