My mother is quite a few words I'm not even sure I know if they're the right definition of...

I thank her for giving me life.
    That's where it stops though.
    Not to derail...

    Great thread!
I lost my mom 5 years ago to cancer and I miss her every day.
It's great to see so many men respect and love their mom.
This thread is going to bring tears to my eyes.

She was born in 1917, and had me very late in life at age 42.
She started teaching school at age 17, in a one room "normal" school in a coal mining camp in West Virginia, where her youngest student was 6 and her eldest was just one year her own junior at 16.
She raised two kids - me and my older sister seen in the second photo when I was around 4 and my sis was around 10.
She taught school until she was 70. Most of those years she taught first grade, and in my home town even now people whom she taught, or whose children she taught, stop me when I'm out and talk to me about her. The last time she was out in public, in fact, a year before she died, I was wheeling her around Park Avenue, in Winter Park, FL, and no fewer than three people stopped to say hello to her, two of whom asked her advice about a child or grandchild about to start school. She died on a Friday five years ago, and I remember as my Sister and I said goodbye to her, there were children gathered on the curb waiting for a school bus, just outside the window of the room where she was lying still and breathless. I've always thought she left us to be with them, which is as it should be.
Not meaning to be glib, but truly, as they say, if you can read this - thank a teacher. She gave me language. Words. My world.

Wow, can see the genetic imprint all over the face. Yep, you're her calf, no doubt.

This is kind of a hard day for me...as it is every year. Actually, May is a terrible month for me...Mother's Day reminds me that this is the 20th Anniversary of my Mom's passing, while the Victoria Day weekend here in Canada is the anniversary (8th) since my younger brother took his own life.

You guys that still have your Mom's are lucky...and it's good to see that many of you are close with your Mothers.

I remember my Mom doing everything she could to make our birthdays and make Easter and Xmas as fun as possible. She'd do all the unpleasant stuff with the Xmas tree, and then she'd let us put the ornaments on it; likewise, one year we had to spend the days leading up to Easter in a hotel...and before we left, she set out stuff that the "Easter Bunny" left for us: clothes, some treats...some hidden treats for each of us to find on our own.

I think it's easy to take for granted that she did everything in her power to make sure our childhood was full and happy, until I see all the kids whose parents abuse or neglect them.

She was the centerpiece of our family, and when she passed on, it never quite functioned as well. icon_sad.gif

Happy Mother's Day to Mothers everywhere!
