Just got it this evening. And yeah, I got the [insert explicative] kit lens with it.
So far, even using the shitty kit lens, it's WAY outperforming my trusty old D70S.
    Anyone else got it?

I'm sitting here figuring out the vast array of settings to play with.
It's like OMG, even some built-in photo editing tools! icon_eek.gif

So far, I'm blown away by this thing. Can't wait to take it to work and see what it can do! (with the good lens, of course)

I do not have it. I just take simple snapshots these days, using a digital 14mp Lumix with a Leica lens. Ironic to me, since I used German Leica 35mm cameras for over 30 years, before I sold them all.

And question: did you fly down the Keys again today, and take any more pics around Islamorada?

Yep, got more pics (zoomed in close-up shot of where you were sitting) and a few other shots that are of commercial quality...and that was still with the D70S...didn't get the D7000 till after work.

And, I JUST noticed an extremely majorly huge issue. The NEF files (Nikon's version of camera RAW files) won't open in Photoshop CS4...no upgrade available to make them work. Working on a fix for that now (hopefully Nikon has software available). If not, I'll have to take the camera back and get one that has compatible files.

Surely the D7000 came with software to manage these files?

But if you took pics with the D70S today, you can post them, as you did the others, right?

Yeah...gonna post them in a little while. Downloading/trying software now for the D7000 (trial version of Capture NX 2 - full version is $130). Seems to work fine so I'll buy it next week.

Needless to say, next time I upgrade, I'm switching ALL my gear to Canon. Nikon is just too damn proprietary on everything.

You should TOTALLY send me your old camera. I'm sure it's 1000 times better than what I currently shoot with.

Nah, gotta keep ye olde D70S as a backup.
But I could send you my OLD old D70 (very first DSLR). It doesn't recognize any memory card...probably not expensive to fix, but I never bothered sending it in to find out.

I had a D70. It was a very good camera. I have a D300 now, which is excellent, so cannot justify an upgrade.

It's not just Nikon that has that problem , nearly every time a camera is introduced the software has to be updated for the RAW files.
CS4 works with DNG files you can get a RAW>DNG convertor free from Adobe

Yeah, after googling a while last night I found that out.
Seems the older versions of Adobe products only support 8bit raw files. The new ones are12-14bit (adjustable in camera). So, at least it's a worthwhile upgrade to get higher quality images. Now I won't feel so bad about spending the dough to buy Capture NX later today.

I have the Nikon D80, which I bought in 2007..

Thinking about upgrading next year, but I do have a flyer from my favourite camera store on the table near my computer.

Since you have the D80, you have to wait for the D8000 to upgrade. j/k icon_lol.gif

By coincidence, I just got a store catalog in the mail yesterday from B&H in NYC. I've been dealing with them for 40 years. Other NYC photography stores that I've used have come and gone, but B&H just hangs in there. I bought my current camera from them last Fall via mail order, satisfied as always.

I no longer get pro-gear for just taking simple digital snapshots, but I still like to deal with professional stores. I know some better bargains exist these days online, but I like a reputable company, and knowing I'm getting a full warranty and not something "grey market." So do you know them? And I don't think being in Canada is a problem.

I still haven't figured out all the controls (or even half of them) on my D90, so I've got a long way to go before getting upgrade fever. At least with my film cameras, when I was using them regularly, I could make most of the adjustments by touch. Stopping and scrolling through a menu totally breaks the heat of the moment and sucks ass.

Still... I doubt that I'll ever use those Canon A1's or the Nikonos again.

The D90 frequently crashes in the field, especially if it's cold or damp. As far as I can tell, the only way to reset it is to remove the battery, and sometimes remove the AF lens and re-install it.

Do you ever see that problem with other digital Nikons?

But seriously, I'd get it sent in if I could.
