Every once in a while something radical comes along in music. An artist goes somewhere others haven't and the result is an awesome concept album.

Going through some of my favourites the other day, I once again came across songs from ' This Delicate Thing We've Made' by Darren Hayes - perhaps one of the most underplayed/ underrated albums.

The album deals a lot with coming to terms with who you are and looking back on your life.

I thought I would share a sample with you all because it is pure genius

    Darren talking about the album.

The lead single - On the verge of something wonderful.

    'Casey'

Looking forward to hearing about some of your favourite concept albums guys!

"Days of Future Past", by the Moody Blues, 1967... THE absolute definition of a concept album! Describes a full day cycle, every song is about a portion of the day, from dawn to dusk... with 2 songs that became hits, ("Tuesday Afternoon", and "Knights in White Satin") and my favorite poem... "Lover's Lament".... (which the 2nd half of the poem begins the day at the beginning of the album, and the more famous part, ends the album... "Breathe deep the gathering gloom....") If you could loop the replay of this album it would be seamless... THAT is a concept album....

I just played this the other day! Such an amazing and beautiful piece of music!
    Classic!

My concept pick would be "A Primitive Guide To Being There" by Jhelisa.
Touches the heart and soul so sweetly!

Yourname2000, those 2 albums you posted, while 2 of MY absolute favorites, aren't true concept albums, in the sense of the word... the songs on each album, if closely analyzed, don't really relate to each other or fulfill a common theme that should run through the entire album.... which is the definition of a concept album....

Trollileo, the music from the film, Flash Gordon, is not a concept album, in the strict interpretation of the meaning.... it is just the incidental music to the film, and also does not relate one melody to the other....

Gregory Alan Isakov - This Empty Northern Hemisphere. I picked this out of relation. Something about the soothing blue grass/folk lures me in, and helps shut my brain off. ""Born in South Africa and raised in Philadelphia, Gregory Alan Isakov makes quietly lush, deeply vibrant music more rooted in the starry night sky—like the one on the cover of his latest LP—than any terrestrial locale." -Paste Magazine
Or same artist but, That Sea, the Gambler. 3 am is fucking legit amazing.

and this is live; in a fucking house.

    From the actual album:

or John Frusciante's independent albums, back in the good days when he was all fucked out on Heroin, back when I could refer to him as a musical soulmate. Now he's just washed up and sober.

It's concept is "I'm fucked up - and I'm fucking angry about it."
    J'adore.

Arcade Fire's first 2 albums ( Funeral, Neon Bible) were really great concept albums.

I'm just going to keep posting this one until everyone's a convert to dance punk. icon_twisted.gif

Seriously though: Pala is an amazing album. Takes you on a journey around the world, with a bunch of tropical destinations slotted in between the hustle and bustle of the big cities.

Disclaimer: the above is only according to my humble opinion - it is not endorsed by Friendly Fires... at all. icon_cry.gif

Thought about this thread again the other day while listening to Morrissey - 'Vauxhall and I' The album's name comes from Vauxhall in London and this album did quite well in the UK and the US.

Why don't you find out for yourself is one of the gems from this album :

    .. Back on topic...

During this time Morrissey become obssesed with boxing and boxers and was rumoured to be dating one.

Following the release of Vauxhall and I, Morrissey released a single called
    'Boxers'

    boxers%207.jpg

So after the release of 'Boxers', Morrissey wrote an album called ' Southpaw Grammar'. Southpaw is a boxing term for those who box with their left hand. The album was loved and hated in good measure..

Music and boxing make an interesting concept album..

Just read that Neon Neon may be in the studio recording a follow up to Stainless Style, their 2006 release inspired by the life of John DeLorean http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_delorean who developed the Pontaic GTO and his own car, the DeLorean in the 70's.

The album contains interesting biographical tidbits, like a song called Raquel which is dedicated to his alledged affair with actress Raquel Welch.

Stainless Style = pure concept album.

    Raquel - great video icon_lol.gif
