have been doing really half arsed training for the edinburgh marathon in 8 days time. The furthers I've run is 15 miles about 2 weeks ago(2hr 26 mins), since then have done a few 8 mile runs, got a mild ankle injury which is now getting better.

I havent run for about 5 days now, have been to the gym x1 this week and will go later today, I just do 4k on the treadmill when there.

Someone told me the other day that you should do your longest run a month before the marathon, but i'm dead keen to try 18 miles just to see how it feels and help decide how I should pace myself...not sure whether to do that this week or just cut my losses and take it easy before the big day! haven't really followed a trainig scheme or anything which I guess is pretty dumb!

Help me out here guys! Everyone at work knows i'm doing it and has sponsored me...will be a nightmare if I fuck it up! icon_redface.gif

I think you'll be fine. . .no way I'd go do 18 miles, no benefit there. Your legs will just be dead. I've done this quite a few times; running marathons is a lot more fun than training for marathons. If your longest run was 15 miles, you'll probably feel it at the end. First marathon I ever ran, the longest training run I did was 12 miles, never ran farther than 13.1. Last 10 miles was rough, last 3 was pure hell. I was 40 minutes slower than the original goal I set and 40 minutes behind the pace group I started with. Still the most fun race I ever ran. Don't go out too fast, the adrenaline will help at the end. Having fun is the most important part, time is totally irrelevant. Hope it goes well and you report back how you did.

Thanks dude. read it but then foolishly ignored your advice and went for a 15-mile run the week before the marathon! Didn't think it was a big deal but I think I probably did feel it in my legs so will listen to you next time!

Got 4hrs 1min 59 secs- pretty pleased! plus I overheard this dumb conversation at the start where these guys were saying that they had heard you get disqualified if you pee in the bushes and i HATE getting into trouble so when I needed to piss at about 9 miles I waited for a cubicle. Probably took well over 1 min 59 secs so fuck it- will award myself a sub 4 hour time!

There were tonnes of guys pissing off to the side! I'm so stupid!

defo doing it again next year- but will follow a proper regime next time!icon_idea.gif

Congrats! Very good time for a first race. Yeah, everybody pees in the bushes, I just try to do it in a discreet area. During the 2009 Detroit Marathon, there was one stretch around mile 16 or so where cops were yelling that they were going to arrest people for pissing in the bushes, but they didn't do anything.

Or you can do it like this guy. . .
