Why are Canadians voting Conservative?

Seems like just a quick glance south would cure anybody of that folly.

Hasnt Harper squandered your surplus for deficit, like Baby Bush did with Clinton's in the US?

One has to wonder when you have had a perfectly good rotten example that you seem to be repeating it.

Alternative view: it would push them towards voting conservative bearing in mind that Conservatives in Canada are considerably less socially conservative than their brethren in the US; further, the Conservatives have been seen as relatively good stewards in managing the economy. Finally, there are a number of social policies like healthcare and equalization payments between provinces that must be dealt with in coming years - which is one reason the Globe and Mail that is often overwhelmingly critical of the Conservative government, reluctantly endorsed the Conservatives.

We are nearing the end of an unremarkable and disappointing election campaign, marked by petty scandals, policy convergences and a dearth of serious debate. Canadians deserved better. We were not presented with an opportunity to vote for something bigger and bolder, nor has there been an honest recognition of the most critical issues that lie ahead: a volatile economy, ballooning public debts and the unwieldy future of our health-care system.

Phew and stinky to riddler's 'bretheren in the US' Conservative in Canada is farther left than the US. Social conservative is a euphemism for I'm better than you.

'Finally, there are a number of social policies like healthcare and equalization payments between provinces that must be dealt with in coming years'

Harper is increasing funding for healthcare by 6% each year over the next four years. That's an increase of 24%. He's also going to address what Provinces are doing with said monies. Our far-right Liberal-in-name-only Provincial party was using the funds for things that had nothing to do with healthcare, on top of charging individuals and families a healthcare monthly premium.

Lastly, SB-Anne-Coulter has me laughing. Obama et al are farther Right than our Conservative party.

PS we voted NDP THIS time. We knew Harper would get in with a majority and like many Canadians, voted strategically to mitigate a super majority. Now, with typical Canadian patience, we all wait to see what Mr Harper does now that he finally has what he wished so ardently for. We think he'll be careful, mindful of what happened to the Mulroney government.

I always look to you guys, and a few other Canadians here, for a clear view of your great country.

What southbeach1500, riddler78 and the other right-wing cabal here like to ignore is that terms like "conservative" and "liberal" do not translate from the US to Canada. The only places the US concept of right-wing translates directly are former Soviet bloc countries and Islamic countries. These are the models for US right-wing attitudes, not our neighbors to the North.

But it's most amusing to watch these right-wing guys here scrambling to claim some unity and association with the "Right" in Canada, and win some endorsement of their own wacko ideas.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but these conservative guys down here would find themselves being involuntarily examined for a mental disorder in Canada, yes?

Art said, " Correct me if I'm wrong, but these conservative guys down here would find themselves being involuntarily examined for a mental disorder in Canada, yes? "

Rofl, I'm not sure an examination would be necessary. I also think you're quite right about this, " The only places the US concept of right-wing translates directly are former Soviet bloc countries and Islamic countries. These are the models for US right-wing attitudes, not our neighbors to the North"

I've seen rhetoric on here that smacks of imagining bolsheviks behind every bush and tree in the US and troikas secretly plotting to make US citizens into some sci-fi form of mind-wiped drones.

Earth to those people: The Cold War ended some time ago and the Iron Curtain fell.
