Do you believe in choice or predestination?

This topic has interested me for a long time now. Is every single event that happens to us dependent on our individual choices and / or the randomness of the universe or are some events in our life or in life in general predestined no matter what? I mean that in the sense that no matter the sequence of actions / choices taken, the end result would have always been the same.

Take the following situation for example: if your parents haven't met the day that they have met would they have met in another place, in another time nonetheless? For example, a year later, in a different city and they would still get married and you would still have been born?
Or a simple inconvenience or change in circumstances would have changed their fate and you wouldn't have been born?

This may contradict with the "Butterfly Effect" theory, that says that even a minimal change in the circumstances (temporally or geographically) will lead to a complete different reality or huge unexpected changes in an apparently unrelated field / geography (there are two versions of this theory, one based on geography and the other on time). But I happen to believe that some events are indeed predestined, while the majority of the other events are controlled by human choice. Maybe I am trying to combine my scientific curiosity with my Christian religious beliefs, but I feel comfortable with this stance toward this subject.

What do you think about it? Does randomness rule our universe or are there some basic rules that govern the main time line of our lives?

I believe our lives are written by a hand that can be bumped at any given time. I need a beer.

I think things just happen for most people. This may sound crazy but I believe certain people are meant for big things. Like the people who die everyday and it seems the norm...they aren't meant for big things. But maybe the people who truly make a difference in the world and who everyone knows about are placed here on earth to fulfill that destiny.

Ghandi, Martin Luther King Jr, Bono (lol) etc...

I also think people want more in their lives and they see a change needed and they place that burden upon themselves to make that change happen.

I don't have the answers, but maybe its fate; maybe not.

I've felt all my life that I was meant to do something big in my life. A lot of things have led me to where I am today, but I also have my doubts. I could be so wrong its not even funny, but I am pushing to see if that feeling inside of me becomes reality...

    I dont know lol icon_smile.gif

It's confusing to me, in philosophy we talked about how everything we do is predetermined, but I don't know. Unless you knew what was going to happen the next minute and changed how you reacted, I guess that's choice...but unless you have premonitions, that's kinda impossible.

It would be sad to think that everything is predetermined. Its like we're in a video game and someone is controlling what we do. Who stays; who goes...

    That would suck lol

I agree that it can be bumped in 95% of the cases, but I believe that in 5% of the time, the major decision points of our life, are predetermined... I need some Vodka and Red Bull icon_biggrin.gif

I sometimes feel the same way... icon_smile.gif I don't believe that we are here just to spend these years and then die. There is or there should be a purpose for our existence. Or else why are we sentient? icon_smile.gif

I sometimes think I am naive for thinking I am destined to do something important, but I am not willing to give up yet on that feeling icon_smile.gif

Friendsrbetter saidI strongly believe that our lives are the result of choices that we have made.
I also am a strong believer in Karma.
Even IF the divine spirit throws things at us that are either good or bad, it's up
to us to use them for our benefit or to discard. Either way, it's still OUR choice.

That's a nice way to look at it. But there are some things that happen in life that i feel are inevitable no matter the choice u make...

If you have that feeling that you're meant to do something big then keep it. Thats the hope you need to keep going and moving forward. I believe that deep down we know what we are "supposed" to do in this world. We may not necessarily like what our conscience tells us we need to do, but we all know what it is...maybe lol

That of course changes when we change and get older, or if life surprises us with good or bad right?

I think its too complicated to cram into one or two ideas. One being we are destined for something; two being we have a choice. I think it may be much deeper than that...again, maybe :-)

Like paying taxes, growing old and dying...

Not only that, like meeting ur soulmate or like being born in a certain family, some very definitive steps in ur life that u may think would have turned out differently if u made other choices, i think would turn out the same... icon_smile.gif

There were times when I would get in the car, turn on the radio (satellite radio : xm) and there would be a song playing that was tuned into my thoughts at the moment.

    I would believe this.

    And I believe in serendipity!

I've thought about that, many times.
And, I'm torn between the two.
I don't think there is a definitive answer.

If you choose to dress up for a job interview, did your attire help you to get the job ?
Suppose you are a good looking, well groomed, well spoken, charming guy with loads of experience going into an interview, dressed very casually ?
Either way, were you meant to get that job ?
Or, either way, were you meant to not get that job ?

I have many times concluded, when things stood in my way, that what I was trying to do, wasn't meant to be.

    It's a puzzle...
