There is this really curious trend I have seen more than a few times with the black community being painted by gays as some high priority threat to gays. Black people are not that much more homophobic than any other racial group int he united states. Most importantly, the level of racism in the black community is pretty much irrelevant because it doesn't contribute to the oppression of anyone except gay black men who are treated in many cases equally poorly by gays. Homophobic black people don't matter really and while people spend time burning them as straw men.....a majority white congress denies them their rights, mormons (who don't even like black people) fund multi million dollar campaigns against their rights............but then again westboro baptist church at least has majority black membership right?.....no? okay then.

Let's distribute the homophobe stickers a little more equally people.

Are you saying racism exists in the US in 2011???
Black people are a convenient scapegoat. They go to church, where it is assumed that the preachers will tell them that gay is a sin. Some black people think that gay issues aren't civil rights issues; therefore black people are against gay rights. No?

dekiruman said mormons (who don't even like black people)

Mormons like black people enough to send missionaries to convert them. The mormons just say that black skin is a punishment for the people who didn't fight with God against Satan. And mormons didn't let black people into the mormon church until like 20 years, but they like black people plenty. icon_lol.gif

Edit: Most gay people wouldn't be caught dead eating soul food. All those fats and calories! Thus gays and blacks can't be friends, obviously.

I don't know about racial homophobia and whatever.

what I DO know, is that in highschool i was ONLY ever openly called a faggot by the black male students, I have ONLY every been harassed for being gay on public transit by black males, and I have only ever been attacked for being gay by a black male.

And I'm SURE this is all coincidence.

people just see black people as more agressive. THOUGH it is a proven statistic that homophobia is more prevalent in areas with less educated people, AND statistically areas with large black populations tend to be less educated (due to poverty?) SO maybe thats the reason? I don't think it is relevant to skin colour.

    I think people are stupid.

    Let's all love each other.

I do agree with mizu5 on the idea that homophobes only come from being uneducated.

We can take some countries in Africa as an example because i heard you'd be put into jails for being gay there. or we can take my country Vietnam as another example too, cuz i heard a mother tell their children not to eat fried chicken from a gay cook yesterday.

I believe it's not about skin color, it's about statistics.

I agree that in the US black men on an individual person-to-person interaction level come off as most homophobic because they are not afraid to be vocal about it. But all they really do is complain and call people faggots. They don't write bills or picket peoples homes. They can't really hurt you in the long run, but they are the face of homophobia. I agree that they are homophobic, but everyone else is too. It's not a coincidence. If a white guy a black guy and an asian guy all think you are a fag, the black guy is far more likely to walk up to you and tell you that. The is more likely to petition to ban marriage for gays in the state....I'm not really sure what the asian guy would do....maybe just avoid you....or chastise you for being gay if you are also asian.

Its sad but in a lot of countries (US) included, gay rights is just a political bargaining chip.

Im assuming these incidents happened in Toronto? Toronto black population is largely Jamaican so that would explain the homophobia

I think many people associate black people with hip hop, which has a history of unabashed homophobia. (Yes, I know that not all black people are into hip hop and not everyone into hip hop is black.)

This ignores the number of black people involved in attacks on gay victims.
White people are also involved in hate crimes against gays, but saying that a black person will just "be vocal about it" and "they can't really hurt you" is not accurate.

    My take on this:

Why are black people singled out as homophobes?

    1.
Black people in general are slightly more homophobic than any other ethnic group. Though there's obviously a bell curve involved so any given Black person isn't necessarily more homophobic than any given White, Hispanic, or Asian person.

    2.
Being unquestionably oppressed and fucked over historically, people assume Black people should be more humble and know what it's like to be discriminated against, therefore not perpetuating the discrimination they used to deal with.

    3.
Racist people take this as an opportunity to say racist things against Black people.

Black people and Latino people tend to be more religious.
    Churches teach hatred, not acceptance.
