And the line coming out of he Central Planning Energy Bureau in Washington DC is that this is "encouraging" energy efficiency. How is it "encouraging" if the Federal government has passed laws that make the sale of traditional light bulbs illegal?
Oh.... come January 1st, we'll be able to "choose" between those mercury-filled compact fluorescents or the LEDs (which cost $50 each!).

To encourage energy efficiency, Congress passed a law in 2007 mandating that bulbs producing 100 watts worth of light meet certain efficiency goals, starting in 2012.
Conventional light bulbs don't meet those goals, so the law will prohibit making or importing them.
