What scares you or do you have a healthy fear of?

What's up fellas. I'm calling out every man on this site simply because I can. LOL. What are some of the things that scare you or things that you have a healthy fear of? Keep in mind that EVERYONE has something to fear or is a little scared of so if anyone says they don't then I'll openly say they have a fear of admittance. LOL.

I'll go first. Spiders scare me. The big fat kind like tarantulas or that one spider in your shed that has gotten way too big from eating whatever it caught in its web. They creep me out especially when I'm watching tv and the camera does a up close face shot of them.

What are some of yours?

I have a healthy respect for wasps. I got stung two or three times when I was 5 years old. You don't forget it..... they are the enemy when it comes to my house & home. No nests. The ground wasps were bombed by firecrackers when I was a teenager....

Since I was a kid, I've had an unnatural fear of falling onto a stick or something and having it poke my eye(s) out. I'm sure my mom said, "You'll put your eye out" one too many times!

Even at the store, those metal things that stick out from shelves that they hang things from--I have a terrible feeling that one day I'm going to trip and have one of those things go right into my eyeball.

I have a deathly fear of rats or anything that resembles a rat (mice, guinea pigs, hamsters, or other rodent-type creatures). It's all the fault of seeing the movie "Willard" when I was a kid. I also get terrified when I have an upset stomach and I think I'm going to vomit...I will do anything and everything possible to keep from doing that cuz it scares me to death....I'm just sure I'm gonna choke to death or throw up a kidney or something.

I also hate heights, thus I am petrified of rollercoasters and, believe it or not, ferris wheels, and I will never EVER jump out of a plane wearing a parachute.

Oh yeah, don't ask me to hold your pet snake either...not gonna happen.

God I'm pathetic! LOL

My last apartment was on the 24th floor in what turned out to be a less-than-desirable building, and everytime I stepped in one of the elevators I was convinced I was going to die.

Well I don't think RBY71 would like me because when I go to the beach I cover horse and dog shit with sand and wait for people to walk in it. I pee my pants every time I see the persons face. "What did I just step in?" Then I go swimming in the ocean to wash the pee out of my pants...

I am scared of becoming an American 'clone sheep'. You know the people who go to work for 9 to 5 for 5 days a week, and they get 2 weeks off a year for vacation and sick leave. That sounds like hell to me.

I'm really afraid of snakes and coyotes. I had a coyote chase us when my chows and I were running on the golf course one night. The coyote got the tail of one of my dogs and just held on for a bit - until I got him to let go. He would have tackled my dog and I have to tell you - my blood went cold I was so scared. Now I carry a golf club when we go for night runs. So for me - snakes and coyotes. Eeeeuuuu.

Definitely snakes for me! It has been like that since my parents took me into the snake house at the zoo when I was 3. Then it got worse when I was bitten by one...ha...all while trying to get over my fear of snakes.

Ha...I will honestly not live in a city where I know snakes (especially poisonous ones) may reside.

I did my undergrad down in Houston and go down there at least once a year. However, I refuse to live down there b/c there are Water Moccasins all throughout the city!...freaks me out!

I have a healthy, legitimate and respectful fear of them after my near death experience with them and the fact that they killed one of my brother (who was also allergice to them but none of us new at the time).

I have a very healthy respect for bees... any kind of bees... because I'm allergic to the sting. I'm not afraid of death, but I don't want to go out of this world because of a bee sting.

I'm terrified of spiders... any spider. Irrational fear that goes back to when I was about 2 and had pneumonia and was delirious from the high fever. I saw giant spiders crawling everywhere (I still remember it vividly), and I've been terrified of them ever since.

Roaches disgust me. Period. So do flies.

I'm hydrophobic, having nearly drowned when I was 5. No, I can't swim... I can dog paddle if I have to, but I can't swim. Haven't found anyone I trust enough yet to teach me.

I have a healthy respect for snakes. The few times I've enountered one in the wild, you would have thought me a statue. I don't think I even breathed until the thing slithered off.

Rollercoasters scare the hell out of me... I'm afraid I'll have a heart attack and die on the damned things, or that the restraint will fail and I'll be flung out into oblivion, so I don't ride them.

Why is this thread making me serious? I think because I see fear as the key determinant of most human behavior.

I have two of my own:

1) That civil society is just a thin thin veneer over our basic human nature, and that it can disappear completely in an instant (say, like during a blackout), resulting in uncontrollable anarchy and violence.

2) Ignorance on a mass scale (like, say, that of religious extremism, for example).

I think these two are both more dangerous than any H-bomb, or... uh spider even.

Oh man, now I feel like such a downer.

So, uh, I'm also afraid of small Italian mouse puppets, but only when they appear on television variety shows?

Let's see...I have a few:

  • non-enclosed bodies of water: if I don't have a complete overview of a body of water that I'm intend to swim in, I will be deeply distrustful of it and will probably not swim in

  • dismemberment: I am frequently concerned by the possiblity of losing a limb or digit due to injury, prompting me to love safety equipment; I also worry about getting struck in my eyes

  • heights: large heights increase my sense of adrenaline flow, increasing my temptation to just to over the edge and feel the fall

  • contagions and other invasives: the idea of having something enter into and evade my body on a minute scale horrifies me; this includes STDs and is therefore a damper on my sex life; this is the one fear that I am currently interested in working out of my system

Your first fear sounds like Thomas Hobbes...for whom life is "nasty, brutish, and short."

Thankfully, our senses of community and social responsibilities aren't necessarily derived from technological deterrence (I suspect that community-by-virtue-of-electricity is a rare phenomenon). I will go out on a limb and claim that a significant majority of human persons are not boiling vats of unvented rage, ready to snap at a moment's notice...they may get a bit kinkier though...I've seen Shortbus...

The strategy is so precise that it makes me think that they keep precise logs and maps (kind of like Hogan's Heroes).

Anyway, the Italians say that stepping in dog shit brings great good fortune and money.

I am afraid of everything. Most nights I go to sleep plaintively asking my partner "do you think everything is going to be allright".

When I was ten we flew from Travis AFB in Sacramento to Hickam Field in Hawaii on a MAC (Military Aircraft Command) flight aboard a C5A Galaxy. If you have ever been on one of these flights you know that the "passenger" compartment is above the freight stowage and it is small. The seats face backwards and the only windows are in the emergency exit doors. Being the kid, I got the emergency exit seat.

We flew for a little less than 2.5 of the 5 hours when there was a big bang. I looked out my little window and saw that the Starboard 4 engine was ON F--KING FIRE.

The pilot, a genius, managed to flame it out and feather another engine on the other Port side of the plane.

A klaxon started ringing (typically military, no off switch) and we dropped to 10,000 feet over the Pacific. We were 15 minutes from the point of no return so we turned back to Travis.

It took 6 hours to get this tug back to California and three passes (underpower) at the runway to get it right. We could see the firetrucks all out of the little window.

Honestly, none of this frightened me. I somehow got that it was technically under some level of control. What got me was that on the second pass at the runway I looked over and saw my father's face. His face was literally white with fear. That is what did it.

(parenthesis) My father was aboard the USS Minneapolis the day of the Pearl Harbor attack and saw the approaching planes from deck. Thereafter he was in practically every battle in the South Pacific including Midway, Tassafaronga, Coral Sea, Philippine Sea, and so on.

In my late 20's, from one day to the next, I developed a crippling fear of flying. It got so bad that I did not leave LA except by train for 5 years. When I finally did start flying again, because I had to, it was with alcohol and Xanax.

After I met my partner he used to comfort me as I totally decomposed on the tarmac.

The worst was a corporate jet flight with a TRUE ASSHOLE CEO who hated my living guts. This asshat decided it would be funny to humiliate me in front of my colleagues on a flight from Venice to Shannon Ireland.

The pilot was so incensed (and decent) that he came back and sat with me while the co-pilot took us over the channel.

When my father died (2005) this passed like a cloud in front of the sun. Now I fly without a second thought and the wonder that I felt as a child is all back. (I have no sense of wonder at having to take of my shoes for some TSA (or the Eurotrash equivalent) F--ktard who doesn't know the difference between socks and an IED but this is the price we pay for having elected the DUMBEST AND WORST PRESIDENT IN THE HISTORY OF OUR REPUBLIC OR ANY REPUBLIC.

Anyway, I worry, I kvetch, I fret, and everything is always in shades of grey and black. I am told we who kvetch live longer.

Ciao

I am no fan of wasps and have been stung twice by them. I don't have an uncontrolled fear of them though (which is nice here in Norway, which turns into Wasp Central during late spring and early summer).

I've tried the passive route with wasps, where I'm to reduce their threat to me by not wafting my arms about. However, I took it too far and let the wasp land on my face; I remained calm while it was there up until it bit me (!) on my lips...that's when I started swatting it away.

It did not sting me, but those wasps have some nasty chompers.

(btw, the reason it bit is likely because I was enjoying some sweet juice and had gotten some of the sweetness on my lips)

I've no fear of any animals or creatures, even as I dislike most of them. (Blame being raised on a farm.) I don't trust horses, but I don't fear them either.

I used to fear flying but worked past that.

I still fear drowning, even though I'm a good swimmer and have saved others.

I'm surprised by the number of people with bee issues. I've lost count of how many times I've been stung - my siblings and I would stumble into nests on the farm frequently and it was war! Especially if you found a nest of giant bumblebees in the hayloft. Not just regular bumblebees like you usually see. There's a family of them that's 3x the size of regular bumblebees and their stings are intense! You swell up for days. I got zapped on the arm by one of those once and you'd have thought a little alien was gonna burst out the next morning.

Anyway...for me it's drowning, death by fire - comes from childhood fears about the wood stove we had in the basement - oh and AIDS. Watching my uncle die of it...I think I'd rather be shot in the face with a double barrel sawed off. And cancer - I obsess about the slightest changes in my moles.

This is a story just for Moudi, after which he will never be able to have furniture delivered again.

Years ago, when I bought my bedroom set and had it delivered, and it was the first night...a dark and stormy night...hahahaha...not really.

I shot out of bed horizontally in my sleep. Even in my unconscious state, I knew I had been touched.

I switched on the light and the room was swarming with american cockroaches, Periplaneta americana.

I grabbed a flip-flop and at about 2 in the morning started swatting roaches...all over the room.

Apparently, the furniture had been stored in a warehouse and the roaches had nested under the chest of drawers and came with it when it was delivered.

----------------

I guess a fear of mine would be a body of water at night. I would imagine all sorts of aquatic creatures in there just waiting to eat me! ...

I know I am 35, but I promise you that she can still utter my name and make me cringe!!! And she always has said "As long as there are chairs I'll still look you in the face while I beatcho ass!!"

I actually had one of those lizards that runs on its hind legs and makes that red flap around its head run across my clothes line at me when I lived in Austin and I threw my laundry and ran screaming across my apts. courtyard.
Not cool.

I normally love lizards, but i wet myself with fear that day.Photobucket

You probably wouldn't like living in Arizona...Now that it is Spring, I see like 10 lizards a day and, strangely, they don't really scare me. Now, the thought of an Iguana or one of those Gila Monster things coming anywhere near me makes my skin crawl.

snakes and spiders, especially constrictor snakes. I tell you there is just something...evil about a snake constricting prey to death and eating it whole. They're evil I tells ya...eeeeeviiiiill!

After watching Salem's Lot on TV in 1979, I developed an unnatural fear of vampires that lasted through 1985. Then, it abruptly ended.

Now, I can watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer reruns with no problem. I don't even grab a cross anymore.

Why, just yesterday I saw Blade III and I had no anxiety when Ryan Reynolds was chained down being bitch-slapped by that thunderc*nt.

Wow, you must be a LOT older than it says in your profile.

I was 16 years old back in 1998. I was visiting my grandma over sea and I saw this big black bug by the lemon tree. It was hard like a shell lol

Would some time with Jeff Dunham and Peanut make you feel a little less afraid?

Forgot, I'm afraid of earthquakes too, and bodies of water that are opaque (either from mud or algae scum).

PhxAriz08, I collected beetles like those. LOL

I even had a cousin who ate beetles, yuck. Cooked of course.

I hate heights. But this is rational. I actually hate falling from heights.

I also hate open water. Also rational, since I actually am not a big fan of drowning and I'm not the world's best swimmer.

I also hate spiders. When I was a kid, my brother and I used to help my dad mow lawns when we first moved to the States. My brother and dad used to fling all sorts of spiders at me and they thought it was funny. Little did they know that I was planning my revenge, Stewie Griffin-style.

Hunter9 saidMosquitoes... I have had some horribly miserable experiences with mosquitoes. Thank god they (for the most part) do not hang out in Southern CA.

They don't have mosquitos in southern california??? How could that be? If that's the case, I'm moving in.

Guy101 saidWhat's up fellas.

I'm afraid of needles.

I would always say snakes, but I've been around them a lot, and I had a 12 foot python on my shoulders the other day. So I guess... heights. I am terrified of heights, but I LOVE being in high places. Especially tall buildings its such a rush!

Spiders, usually freak me out. Some of them, not all of them. I used to try and catch tarantulas when I was younger.

Claustrophobia and earthquakes. More specifically being SMASHED by something because of an earthquake.

Obviously, spelunking would not be my first sport of choice.

I get the willies thinking about it! =/

A great question (in my opinion), Guy101!

I had some time to reflect on it and realized that an accurate answer to your question would require a pretty dense outline of fears, subfears, physical fears, psychological fears, etc.

The fear that confronts me every day, however, is the one that motivates me to put on a 'mask' when I leave my home and walk the streets, or get on the bus, or go to work, or to a store, that hides my sensitivity, love, weakness, confusion, freakdom, etc. and helps me to avoid unwanted attention.

Part of this has to do with living within a culture that I'm still getting used to, but I did it in the U.S., too.

Snakes, I am definately and completely afraid of snakes. I can fend off wild beasts and such in the woods, have no qualms about the "bad parts of town" but a small snake comes out of the brush and I'm out of there!!!
I don't even like snake movies of pictures in books.

I'm afraid I'm never going to find "the one." I'm not good at relationships and it seems as if every time I find someone, the guy is either not interested or decides to move to NYC or something like that.

My biggest fears were spiders, driving when I have no idea where I am, and heights...like standing on the edge of a cliff. I can stand on the edge of a cliff if there's a railing between me and the drop.
Anyways, this was the year for overcoming ( or at least facing) my fears. I made myself touch a couple spiders (yes, small ones) and I can sit still and let one crawl on me now without doing the girly-scream.
Living on the water, there's still several large ones I don't want to cross paths with, but I no longer shoot every one I see. I will probably never have one as a pet.
I bought a GPS and made myself drive in areas I don't know. It's really not that bad. And being a photographer, I took some great photo trips this winter.
I went up in a hot-air balloon and took a powerchute ride, which I instantly fell in love with. It's actually pretty secure. Still have a hard time walking up to the edge of a high point with no railing, but I don't really need to do that anyways.
Oh, and I started making myself try new foods.
I still don't like animals that are big enough to eat me. Doesn't make much sense if we're supposed to be the top of the food chain.

An apprehension towards spiders that are wiry and bony (the furry ones really don't both unless they get on me by surprise, such as running across my foot when I'm camping), silence freaks me out (especially in the middle of a conversation, even if its a natural pause).

But most of all, I'm scared of going over the top. I love the thrill of extremes (swimming till you're exhausted, being loud and crazy at parties) but I'm really scared I'm going to far (and thus will lose friends, family members, etc.....so it probably stems from a fear of being lonely...though alone is good sometimes but never lonely).

Spiders of any kind scare the crap out of me, especially when they surprise me or come out of no where. Im not girlie in any way, but when a spider pops up ive been known to shreak, jump, run, and etc. lol.

Also the thought of being alone one day, makes me shiver.

Waking up one day to find myself, laying on a cott back in preschool at the end of nap time, with the past 20 or so years had being a dream. (no joke this scares me the most)

Microscopic things entering my body, needels, and sharp objects near my head; esp. my eyes.
