I have taken a protracted rest from this site, but coming back I think I will just try again in a few months. Scanning the forums I find the same circular arguments about the same unresolved topics (only with more name calling), ridiculous thread titles (e.g. Cross dressing serial killer on the loose), and the same pervasive racism/internalized homophobia/transphobia/agism/left-right pandering/sexual hypocrisy as ever. At some point I hope the pendulum will swing back to a more constructive, friendly, and light-hearted treatment of the various issues that we discuss. If that happens, my old RJ buds will be sure to let me know, I hope? Until then: You guys really do need to class it up a bit.

    Here's to better days...

There are almost as many "RJ ain't what it used to be, I'm leaving" threads as Man Above You Threads.

I think this happens on every board that has a significant influx of new members. The only ones I haven't seen it happen on are much smaller boards. The "I'm leaving because it ain't what it used to be" threads, that is.

''Be the change you wish to see in the world''.... or the forums, to be more apt.

I find it amusing to see purportedly reasonably "normal" guys dig their own graves on here. The funny thing about forum posts is that they have a relatively long shelf life--i.e., they remain on the net until the website owner terminates the website and its content. And, sometimes, the posts continue to exist independent of the terminated website if the website's content has been "cached" or copied, at least that's my understanding (I'm certainly no expert on this subject so please feel free to educate me). Thus, once someone has made an ass of himself, it becomes very difficult, if not impossible, to rehabilitate his image or reputation because his forum posts will always be there to haunt him.

What exactly do you want to see on here? How can any topic be new in such a large group of people on a website that has been around for a while?

Theantijock, I'm sorry that you deleted all your posts from the Hawking-heaven thread, because you do make some good points. (And believe me, TigerTim is usually a nice guy from what I've seen, if he'll just step away from the podium for a sec) I hope I didn't offend you in any way.

But getting back to the OP: I've used the block function quite "liberally" (no pun intended), because literally every other post from some people are nasty (sometimes in flowery language) even when you agree with them. I try my hardest to be use smilies a lot and stick with

"constructive, friendly, and light-hearted treatment of the various issues that we discuss"

but it seems that it's not working on other people.

What happened to consensus? Is it such a bad word?

I meet new people, develop friendships outside the board setting, then eventually meet them in person. That's kind of why I'm here. Oh and to look at all the man candy and push myself harder at the gym cuz that guy over there looks way too good for his own good icon_razz.gif

There are some topics on here that I know I won't like and I simply don't open those threads. There are some people on here that I know I will not interact with well and I ignore their posts or in extreme cases block them. If you are REALLY coming on here for support then why not stick to the supportive threads rather than doing a virtual "Hair-flip-dramatic-exit" with a generalized slam to all those contributing to the board.

Perhaps a friendly and light-hearted atmosphere can be sustained for only a finite period of time. If it was so valuable to all those guys who were here in the early days of the site, I don't see why they didn't stick around to show the newbies how it's done.
