Does anybody have some ways to help me recover from a very bad ankle sprain? It has put a slow down to my workouts!

Stay off it, ice and elevate. Motrin for pain.

How long has it been hurting? More than a month and you need to see an orthopedist.

No, I did this 5 days ago, had xrays and not broken bones. the swelling is going down but still stiff and very uncomfortable to walk on.
I have tried to keep it up some with ice. there is really no pain.

Yeah you shouldn't try to walk on it for at least two weeks. It sounds like its getting better though, just hang in there!

Don't rush through the recovery. If the ligament heals in an extended position you could have permanent hypermobility. Something I learned the hard way.

the more you stay off it, the faster it will heal. don't forget RICE!
    Rest
    Ice
    Compression
    Elevation

See if you can get an aircast or boot or something as well. It will let you walk on it without moving it around (Ace bandages are not the same). You wouldn't have to sleep or shower with it, but believe me it will help speed your recovery.
