The Fall of Realjock

This may indeed start a flame war, but I'm curious about what people's thoughts are. I've been on this site for about 4 years now and I remember a time when the site was filled with articles with gay/bi athletes, new workouts programs, articles about fitness, nutrition, and general health that invited open discussion and brought together like minded people to meet and talk. Since then, it seems that the flow of new material has fallen to trickle.

The workout programs are still great and I know the trainers put a lot of effort into creating them, but where's the new material? New nutrition articles or discussions of fitness trends? Maybe even some published professional journal articles that show advances in fitness, training, nutrition? News in LGBT atheletics?

The forums have pretty much taken over the site and, while I respect it and believe it crucial that people have a place to discuss these topics, are a slew of messages about "_____ the person above you" really what this site was meant to be? The weekly updates just highlight forum posts and recycle old exercise demos.

I will say that the one truly amazing recent change the site has undergone was introducing me to DJ Grind's mixes and am eternally grateful for that. But I wish there was a way for RJ to return to its former glory.

And of course, I may be the crazy one and the only one with an issue about how the site has turned out in the end. What are other peoples thoughts? What would you change about the site and what would you keep the same?

You need to visit the Fitness forums.
They account for ~90% of the fitness and nutrition info I've gotten over the past 1.5 yrs...and went from 230 lbs of fat to 170 lbs of lean muscle as a result of following such advice.

I've seen the forums and the variety of advice there is great. But I'm talking about seeing actual articles on the site again

Based on the number of these "Ain't like it used to be" threads, I'd say that this is the new RJ.

True, and I'm not questioning what it's current condition is I think I just stated what I was observing. I'm just trying to see what it could potentially be and how/if it can be improved

I'm relatively new to RJ and I guess I can only blame myself for not posting more thought provoking threads. I would like a little more depth.

Yeah. I'm pretty much there. I spent part of the last hour filtering out "Guy above you threads" and notice that it's hard to find any decent conversations on here anymore.

it's from the forums i got most of the training tips i adopted in the last year.

for RJ to bring new material probably takes more time and work than the admins can afford. You'd have to be reading on what's being done all the time, contact a shitload of people to get updates etc. IT would be cool, but i can understand that it's not happening .
training or action videos from RJ specialists in various fields would be totally fantastic but that takes a lot of time and dedication.

... and many members seem to enjoy coming here mainly to socialize. I think some exclusively click on "all things gay" . icon_rolleyes.gif

erm.. have you ever tried producing new content for a website? It takes a lot of time. Even posting interesting links and recycling is work.

I agree. Some selective use of the forums might provide more of what the OP wants, less of what he dislikes. It's a buffet, and you choose a little of this, and a little of that. Nobody expects you to like it all.

And BTW, "Fall" seems to be a bit of exaggeration. "Decline" if you wish, "stumble" perhaps, but Fall is too extreme.

Forum games astound me. The amount of time posting lowest quality posts wasted! There are so many better ways to waste time if you don't want to talk about something important.

Being very logic-minded, "last to post wins" make my brain smoke and crackle. But they're in every forum I've been to. There is apparently a huge market for them, and they've become a staple. It's kind of like how every place needs a place to shit.

well this entire forum is more of a beauty contest if anything...its all about looks...and if the majority of people don't like your looks..your IGNORED. every other topic is geared towards the attention to the "guy above you", who's sexy and who's not. When someone attractive signs up...they get a thread dedicated to them exclusively...and if you notice those are the threads with the most responses.Im not saying its a problem, just simply an observation. However with that being said, perhaps the name should change from Real Jock...to HOT JOCK ..because thats what it definitely seems to be all about...who's Hot and who's Not...best body...hottest guys..etc...as is society. I rarely ever see exercise tips being exchanged or conversations about the gym at all. Its all "whos pants would I like to get into"....and they entire "I'd totally do you!!" mentality...which is fine because when you think about it ...thats how society is. Its NOT ABOUT WHAT YOU KNOW..ITS ABOUT WHO YOU BLOW. icon_wink.gif This forum completely reflects that.

Time spent complaining would be much better spent posting something interesting, though perhaps with a day or so's wait so as to get out from under all the end of the world threads.

Oh, now you've gone & done it with your thread! You've reactivated Caslon's lolcats, and something ever more perverse, lolbirds.

And the only way to counter Caslon's lolcats is... with more lolcats!!!

As for workout routines, there are only so many exercises possible, nothing revolutionary.

A web site, regardless of how it starts out, gradually becomes what the majority of the members want it to be.
That is, they make the site theirs.

This isn't "the fall of RJ." It's simply what it has evolved to be.

BTW, all the things that you suggested should be here, you could do a little Googling and post your results. Just sayin'.

    How about this?

If you don't like what you see here on RealJock, why not come up with what you consider to be a thought provoking thread instead of bitching about the current content here in the forums?

hmm OP is correct, hes not bitching..why dont you be more creative? f.y./ i personally think "your above me threads" = lame...I really could care less if you get offended but the bottom line is..people need to be more original. Like for instance whenever a really good thread starts that involves gay political agendas or social debates on human issues..its like the majority of the members dont have an idea how to contribute to such threads. The site is beginning to be messy..Meninlove my fav couple icon_smile.gif have stopped giving insight on certain topics ..come on guys, its not that hard to be unique and opinionated. I stand by the OP.

In order to cause a change there has to be a movement for change even if one person does so, the change if willing by the community will be aided and strengthened causing a new vision to be seen. Tried to today with a thread I made, but looks like more has to be done.

I think what we get here at RJ, considering that it is 100% free, is pretty damn good. Lots of quality guys, great fitness & workout tips, interesting and thought provoking discussion forums, with a mix of silly, but often-times humorous ones as well. Even an occasional flame war ads some spice. The DJ Grind was an awesome addition. RJ is still the best gay site out there, with a little bit of something for everybody. Props to the creator and all the other people who work to keep it up and running.
