    just read this...

A troubling report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention which watched "49 HIV-infected gay and bisexual men who had 'symptomatic early neurosyphilis'" and found that the driving force behind both new regular syphilis infections and neurosyphilis (which can lead to blindness and stroke) is unprotected sex between gay men.

Said Dr. Thomas Peterman of the CDC's Division of STD Prevention: "In some instances, the men involved have the attitude that they do not need safe-sex practices because they already are infected with HIV...There are a number of studies that continue to show that there are some HIV-infected and some uninfected men who have sex with men who continue to have large numbers of (sexual) partners and anonymous sex. This is one of the consequences of that...I think the bigger message is that we need to get control of syphilis. And control of syphilis would require safe-sex behavior, reducing the number of partners, and using condoms with those partners. And for men who have sex with men, it means getting tested for HIV and other STDs at least once a year."

These are the demographics of the CDC's study: "Of the 49 HIV-positive gay and bisexual men with symptomatic early neurosyphilis, 63 percent were non-Hispanic whites, 18 were non-Hispanic blacks and 14 percent were Hispanic. Their average age was 38."

Yet another reason to wrap that shit up. NRG is spot on - you could carry syphillis for years and be totally asymptomatic. Or you could miss the secondary stage of the infection completely - sometimes it manifests itself as a simple, non-itchy rash. Not something you think would be an STD! And not only will you spread it like wildfire in the meantime, but you could eventually go blind, have a stroke or become paralyzed.

And hot sex isn't going to be nearly as much fun if you suddenly get affected by any of those serious maladies mmkay?

ALWAYS be sure you are getting tested for HIV and a full battery of STD's at least yearly, more if you're increasingly sexually active. All major metropolitan areas have clinics that are confidential where you can receive free or low cost testing. I do fundraising here in SF for that very reason, to provide services to everyone - so please, go out and use them!

Still carrying my V-Card, and no intentions of losing it. People are just gross and taking care of yourself isn't even afterthought anymore. You can tell people over and over "You're gonna die horribly" Response? "Don't care-feels good" Too focused on instant gratification.

The attitude now is that AIDS is merely a treatable chronic disease, like diabetes. Unprotected sex is a fetish, and a significant amount of new porn is bareback. I can see the STD situation getting a whole lot worse before it gets any better.

"A syphilis outbreak among Winnipeg men is being blamed on casual, anonymous sex facilitated by online hookups. The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority is concerned about the resurgence of syphilis, a sexually transmitted illness virtually eradicated from North America in the 1990s."

The truth is the truth. Gays who want meaningless sex deny this so they can get sex. It's men in general. It is sad state of affairs.

"Recent years have shown an accelerated increase in the number of cases, with the largest increases occurring among MSM. Among women, rates increased during 2005–2008 and decreased during 2009–2013, with different trends among different racial/ethnic groups. Racial/ethnic disparities in reported syphilis persisted during 2005–2013, likely reflecting social determinants of health, such as socioeconomic status, that might contribute to the burden of syphilis in a community.[1] These findings underscore the need for continued syphilis prevention measures among MSM."

    Prevention is better than cure.
