saw a "new in box 10w7" in the classifieds for 300 bucks so i had to buy it

secondly, i dont know how many replies ill get on a RJ forum but.....

anyways im asking for tips on what kind of box to build

I have access to a shop and quality wood workers

I am willing to build a bandpass obnoxious box for fun or even rip out the spare and work the wheel well.

    but any suggestions?
    Sealed or ported?
    JL's specs http://mobile.jlaudio.com/pdfs/7591.pdf
copy the HO box from JL?

    amp

    Alpine MRD-M605
    400 watts x 1 at 4 ohms (600 watts RMS x 1 at 2 ohms)

so roughly 500wrms at 3 ohms ( my electrical engineering classes didn't teach me much) lol (ps correct me if im wrong and explain too)

    thanks

if you can make your own box and make it right, make it ported for sure. Your bass is going to sound better if that pressure has somewhere to go.

As far as putting it in your spare wheel well, I wouldnt. Save that for an 18" if you have plans on getting another sub. If you do decide to port it make sure you add an extra inch on either side of the box so you can point the sub down that way it has to force the sound out and you get better sound.

Also do you have an amp or are you just planning on running the wires from your preamp in your head unit? You can run off your preamp but when you get heavy bass your headlights and dash lights are going to fade in and out. Not really noticeable but just something to think about. icon_smile.gif

Also, don't rip out your spare (unless you plan on keeping it somewhere else in your vehicle). Having a full (or even a partial spare) is more important than a rocking sound system.

I know I came off as an asshole(im not that naive) but if you understood what he said you would know why i acted out.

He didnt read that i clearly listed an amplifier.
    He told me to
"go ported for sure" because "Your bass is going to sound better if that pressure has somewhere to go" which has no significance or educated back bone what so ever.

Ported boxes are generally louder and if you tune the box you can control which sound range (low or high bass)'s volume will be increased.

ported boxes are generally considered louder but the sound quality can be worse.

    He also said
"You can run off your preamp but when you get heavy bass your headlights and dash lights are going to fade in and out." If i were to run off my preamp(this is not the proper terminology) My headlights would not fade as the load will not exceed what the head unit is capable of. which is well withing "noticeable dimming". On the other hand if i used an amplifier, which i clearly labelled, my headlights would dim. He is completely backwards.

Not only was he uneducated and giving bad advise, he was misleading me. If i was totally new to car audio and took his advice i would have been negatively persuaded. His advise was detrimental to my goals or anybody's goals as far as having a "good sound system" goes.

This is not just my opinion on his advice, I am confident any professional would agree his comments were ridiculous.

If you knew you would get answers like this, then why did you phrase your question as such. It would seem, sir, that you are the only retard among us.
