Here's a video from Wanda Sykes that takes on the phrase That's So Gay
Something I've always hated when I hear it said
That equates something lame or stupid as Gay

It's a predecessor to the NBA ads that have been airing here during the playoffs. Stations were actually airing these before Kobe-gate, when the NBA stepped in to contribute to them.

I like these ads, but I think people need more of an explanation. People are always going to chock this up as a "figure of expression" otherwise...

Words and actions are what shapes society. Just having the idea to call something negative gay says a lot about how society feels about homosexuality. Until people understand that it's not going to get better.

That phrase doesn't bother me at all. People have no problem with saying "that's so ghetto" and we all know what demographic to which that refers. "That's so gay", "That's so retarded"... "That's so lame"... It's all saying the same thing and it's funny as long as we're not in the group we're making fun of.

that's so ghetto refers to what? jews? because I'm pretty sure they were the first in ghettos.
Ghetto refers to poor/rundown, not any particular race or creed. And something CAN be be ghetto. and inanimate object cannot be gay.

But I agree with FTF kinda. I think people are OVERLY PC. but if it bothers someone, I will refrain ffrom calling soemthing gay aorund them.

Well gay once meant happy and bright, and then it was hijacked to mean homosexual, albeit many of our half brothers the bisexuals stand under our flag, and not their very own.

But then language is a living thing and changes over time, now it means dumb, so people need to build a bride and get over it. We don't own the copyright to it.

I love it when someone is 'gay' for something. It's definitive, rather than derisive.

There is always a majority of straight people - they're gonna make themselves comfortable...butt we're bringing them along nicely indeed.

I gotta go with Mrs Banks in Mary Poppins who said - "...though we adore men individually (gay or straight); we agree that as a group they're rather stupid." She goes on to say something about casting off shackles. Perhaps the next generation will neglect to put them on in the first place.

Oh come on now. Don't delude yourself. Nobody in this country says ghetto and refers to Jews. That's 1950s definition. It's 2011 and words have changed.

I was on a date with a guy the other week and he says, "look at this dent in my car, I don't want to be looking ghetto.." I thought that just sounded so lame. Like really? So the only people who I see riding around with cars all taped and bandaged up are ghetto people? It's so dumb.

Yeah but that wasn't the point of the video. So many people say, "well I'm not offended, well I like it, I don't care...." Well not everyone feels the same.

I think it would have hit home a lot better if she made an analogy to using the word 'nigger' in regard to something that was bad. Most people can still relate to that as being not ok to say so nonchalantly.

I agree, but when society is in the middle of the throws of accepting or nullifying gay people in society, it's expected for the word to still be offensive. Part of the insult which comes from people using the word in that way is due to the indifference about how using that word can be offensive to begin with! It's another example of how gays have been marginalized and not cared about in society and as a result disrespected and treated badly.

cRazy world we live in that has become ridiculously PC. On one hand people argue against using "That's so gay" while other people are up in arms over an amendment in Mississippi that forbids teachers to use the word "gay" in schools. Strangely, the word gay doesn't bother me, but when I hear (or even see in writing) the "N' word I just cringe.

Aren't you confusing legislation with persuasion now? The video is just advocating respectful behavior.

I think we would still both agree that everyone should still have the freedom to say those things if they wish to do so, but it's not very nice either.

Her weak counter example is targeting the same kid who said "that's so gay." I thought it was pretty clever..

And I actually support these ads and agree with the point they are trying to make. Sure, words have changed and 'gay' used to mean happy, or bright, but today it's associated with homosexuality. And it's comment like, "Wow, he is so gay." (used with an offensive intonation) that makes - or at least plays a big role - closeted kids afraid to come out.

Too bad the kid wasn't Black and she wasn't a Mexican Lesbian. The "N" word would have worked perfectly.

So if it's not big deal for someone to say "that's so gay" and mean "that's so stupid", does that I mean I can say "that's so black" and have it mean "that's so stupid"?

I know but I think it would have carried more weight if she used a term that is still derogatory to another whole class of people (like nigger) and all the history of abuse that has come along with it.

Likening gay as just a silly insult like a person's age and how they look because they can't grow a full mustache fails to recognize how impacting it can be.

For me, whenever someone gets insulting about being gay it doesn't just mean how a person might look silly, it reminds me of everything bad I've gone through my entire life for people hating or disliking gays.
