Why have companies like Apple and Google grown so explosively in the past few years and why do the brands garner such loyalty from their customers?

A team of neuroscientists scanned the brain of an Apple fan and it showed that the brand was stimulating the same parts of the brain as religious imagery does in people of faith.

I have a vendetta against Apple, I just like to be anti anti-mainstream. Apple and Google nothing but Liberal people running around drinking in Starbucks, looking busy typing on their tablets, while on the IPAD listening to their IPODS, and saying Liberal things on the Twitter!

Don't even get me started on Macs and the Gays. I once met a Gay who had a Mac, little did I know that this Gay was a straight before he got the Mac, it slowly transformed him into a Gay Liberal Starbucks activist! Macs, Apple = Disgustingicon_evil.gif

    This:
Apple Obsession: The Science of iPad Fanaticism"I think that if ever there is a brand cult, Apple deserves it, they come close to religious fanaticism on the part of enthusiastic followers," Belk said.

He points to some Apple enthusiasts who went out and bought iPads despite complaining early on that the iPad didn't offer much new, saying it was essentially a big iPod touch.

"That sort of loyalty and devotion would suggest that there's something more than an objective appraisal going on, and it's the same sort of faith and loyalty that we see in religions oftentimes," he said.

And Apple's marketing I think is very appealing to a kind of people who are more susceptible to it and propaganda techniques - not all of 'them' are like that though.

There is even this doc on the fanaticism some exhibit

it seems like Apple is one of those brands that cares more about form than function. I personally love their designs.

I sincerely doubt that Apple is growing as fast as it is simply because it looks pretty. Their products function incredibly well and their computers are a far superior machine compared to any PC. Oh, and ever heard of the iphone? That would be the cell phone that revolutionized the cell phone industry. Actually several of their devices have revolutionized the tech world.....ipods, ipads, etc.

I own an iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad 1 and iPad2. I don't think Apple is far superior on anything theyre just a bit more organized and I do prefer Apple's iOS over anything else available because of this, but Mac OSX still doesn't convince me in any way. Finally if Apple devices were ugly they wouldnt sell nearly as much. That's like saying that a given product wouldn't sell more without marketing an image.

This right here, and many of the gullible get washed away in the mysticism of teh Apple. They cost significantly outweighs the benefits when compared with other brands.

Cost isn't an issue for me, so the benefit of my MacBook's elegant aluminum case is worth it to me. As for function, there simply isn't a multi-touch touchpad in the Windows world today that works anywhere near as well as the touchpad in my two year old MacBook.

That said, as an owner of both an Android phone and an iPad 2, I find myself continually liking Android a lot more than iOS. I used to think I'd eventually get an iPhone if US Cellular ever offers it, and at this point, I'm more likely to ditch the iPad for an Android tablet.

Yeah I agree. Apple also cares more about control than freedom and is good at convincing people that what it wants is best for them.
