I've got a Blackberry 8800 that I really like--don't know how I managed to live without email on my mobile. Will definitely switch to the iPhone, but I usually wait until second-gen for Apple products. They're terrific first-gen, but the improvements on the next release are usually substantial ... and fast on the heels of the previous model.

(boo for only being on AT&T/Cingular... it sucks in BOSTON... verizon has a major chokehold on the Boston market).
If I were to get one, I'd wait until Gen 2 or 3. The whole "You dont need an ipod and a phone, you have both" makes me a bit leary... id rather have something for my music, and somethign for communication separate. I'll probably just upgrade my Berry though.

If the iPhone had a better camera, I'd get it. I want 5MP, like the new Nokia N95. I like the integrated iPod too. My iPod pretty much lives in my car, so I'd view an iPhone as a second iPod, not a replacement for my primary one. Of course, I have over 120GB of music, so the iPod's paltry 8GB doesn't quite cut it for me...
They also need to add IM. SMS is great, but they need a version of iChat for the iPhone.

My partner is currently standing in line. The iPhones actually go on sale here in Seattle at 6:00 p.m. tonight. People have been standing in line since yesterday.
I hope he gets one, but I think they'll be out of stock pretty quickly.

Test drove an iPhone yesterday - very cool! Only downside that I could find was the touch keyboard did not like big fingers - spent a lot of time getting the right letter. Otherwise, it was pretty incredible - very light, sleak design - vivid graphics. But not sure I would part with my iPod. I think I would still use both.

I live in CDMA country (I'm with US Cellular), and an iPhone would have terrible coverage out here. And, since I just got a new phone a couple months ago (a RAZR), it'll be at least two years before I upgrade, anyway.

i'm loving the new iPhone... no phone on the market (including blackberry) can touch what this phone does.
people that are saying it's better to wait for the next version of the iPhone are insane (and don't have one, clearly) because this thing is a real stunner. i am totally blown away by how well every feature works, and it has features that aren't even mentioned in the commercials.
the other companies will be scrambling to keep up over the next few years...

I upgraded my Slvr to an iPhone, it was a substantial upgrade for me and defiantly was worth it, having 8 gigs for music is like carrying an Ipod nano, and the less things I have in my pocket the better. I don't have to worry about something falling out, while I scramble to get my Metro Card to catch a train, and having google maps, a web browser and my email all at the touch of my fingers. It's incredible. On Friday at 6 PM I had a yoga, I got out of there by 8 PM and down to the Soho Apple store by 8:15 and to my surprise the people who had camped out for a day or two were gone and the line had nearly vanished, So I was able to walk in and walk out with my new phone in about 10 mins. So after feeling great from my yoga class, not having to wait in line to get the phone was icing on the cake ;-)

If iPhones are so readily available in Apple stores at list price, why are there so many of them listed on eBay for more than list price?
BTW, yesterday I ran into someone who has one. They do actually work in the more populous parts of Iowa, but there are gaps in the coverage. The guy at the US Cellular booth said there's no ATT coverage at all in the boonies south of here.

Jul 02, 2007 2:18 PM GMT
I do not have either and Im happy that way. I dont want any one at work to keep sending me emails and expect me to answer them as im driving home or if im at the gym, or during the weekend. If im not at the office, then dont expect me to answer emails. As for the iphone there are some serious draw backs. For those of you who have it, what are the security fetures in it? does it come with a firewall, antivirus, encription? I ask because you have access to the web and we all know how clean the web is. Less than 10 GBs of memory? My ipod has more than that, even my flash drive player can hold more than that. And then we have sweet old ATT. The service around my area is awuful. So for the time being I will pass. In a year when the new one come up and every one else is stuck in their 2 year plan, I might get it, and who knows maybe the competition will come up with something better.

I feel like it may be worth it to wait for 3G. The current experience on Edge (from what I heard) is not acceptable (for me at least).
But in the mean time...I am uber-jealous at anyone who has one....cause it's just sooooooo amazing!

ah the iPhone...waited like 5 minutes in SoHo for mine. which isn't long enough because the Apple SoHo store is the highest concetration of hot men (not in a gym) during daylight hours.
Shit, gave that away....ok, it's not. They're all HIDEOUS....
anyway
...the 2.5/EDGE thing is the only drag. and a real drag.
i am suprised how well my big fingers can type on it.
the big shock to me is actually the quality of the iPod. Sure, it's only 8 gigs (only 8 gigs....god i remember the casette player next to the Commodore 64...) but the sound quality is phenomenal. (I've had a few iPods in my day). And the video is unbelievable.
The calendar and contact sync is great as well, though i wish the calendar would be color-coded like on the Mac.
i had backed my Verizon contacts up on line, so transferring numbers was a little bit less of a drag - mstly cut and paste into the mac address book and hit "sync."
|
|
|
Jul 07, 2007 5:28 PM GMT
I have a blackberry and a windows smart phone. I prefer the windows because of the sync with an exchange server. With outlook, outlook web access, and outlook mobile, i can access any of my contacts, notes, or calendar entries anywhere, and other people i delegate can add/modify them, and they all sync transparently. I've tried that with palm pilots, blackberry's, and linux ical stuff, it works best presently with windows.
I'd ditch it in a minute for any open source solution, but so far, there are none that compete.

Fuck Blackberry - all your god-damn crackberry stuff goes through my hometown - seriously, there's like a cloud of EM interferance everywhere in the K-dub....though...Rim has deep pockets and my university is definitely profiting from it. Lol, the owners of RIM like to...donate...LARGE...sums..of money to my school, hahaha.
but I'd still take an iPhone over a crackberry. Did anyone watch reboot when they were a kid? Cause I did, and the iPhone is like, the EXACT organizer-pad thing that Dot Matrix had. I've been waiting my whole life for it, hahahaha.
Ok...that's a tad pathetic. but I don't care. I'm still buying one. But everyone else...keep buying crackberries...I need a nanotech building. lmao

tanktop, just so you know...any Mac product, including the iPhone can be synched with your Address Book, web browser bookmarks, keychain items (login/password items). That's been a feature of the Mac OS for some time.

Thanks, I know about syncing, with Apple, blackberries and palm pilots. But that's not the same as syncing to the exchange server. I'll give you an example of what you can do:
Someone calls my office, and speaks to the manager needing work
She adds their contact info to my contact list She adds an item for me to their todo list She sends them an email confirming, and CCs me
All this is sync'd to my phone over the air in real time (or every 10 minutes, depending on the setup) I call them, and get their cell phone number, add it to my contact list on my phone I add a comment to the task on my phone I send an email from my phone confirming
All this is sync'd to the exchange server I see it on my pc at home. She sees it on hers as work. I see it in outlook web access from the client's office
We decide we want to have a meeting.
I create a meeting request, seeing her schedule in Outlook to pick a time
Everyone replies by email to the request
It is added to my calendar when they confirm, and sync'd automatically to my phone
My phone alarms me an hour before
All of this is accomplished with Windows Small Business Server Software (about $600 for a 5 user) running on a Dell PowerEdge server (about $500), and with any clients (macs, pcs, any web browers). It's easy enough that I set it all up myself.
I have tried other solutions, such as Blackberry Enterprise (too expensive and combersome), Evolution on Linux (not ready for prime time yet), and various Palm/Blackberry solutions.
So far, no solution I have found beats the Exchange/Outlook/Outlook Web Access/Outlook Mobile solution.
And I have had all this working using a free (after rebate) phone from Cingular for 2 years.
Now I am the first to agree that the Apple OS based on Unix is much more elegant, secure, and powerful than Windows, as is Linux. But none of the "groupware" type platforms yet compare favorably to Exchange.

I was waiting for the RAZR2 which is probably coming out in the next couple of weeks, but just got a new Samsung A717. Works nice and on 3G, but I think I'm going to get tired of the clamshell. Going to swap out for a Blackjack before my 30 day trial. Don't have to hit so many damn keys to make the write letters come up.
iPhone....sigh. If they can figure out how to upgrade their chipset to use 3G without draining the power so fast, I'll consider it. Might have to wait 1 or 2 gens, though.

I've had one for a week now, and I initially had my reservations. I was mostly worried about the keyboard - and although it's virtual and somewhat small for my big fingers, the software is really good about knowing what I intended to type. So, I really haven't had much of a problem writing e-mails or texting.
Yeah, 3G would be great, but I'm quite pleased with the WiFi - as most of the places I've been showing the phone to friends has been at or near someone's wireless router that I can hop on. And the WiFi is faster than 3G.
Everything else is just simply amazing. They did a great job on the interface and I'm rather pleased with it. Sure it was expensive, but I was in the market for a new iPod and a new cell phone and was already an AT&T customer - so I'd likely have spent the same price on both separately.
In response to jonnyfreestyle's comment:

Actually, sources from apple have reported (unofficially) that production has been limited to only a few hundred thousand. And most of those were sold out on the first day. As with any major product launch, unless the product is ready months ahead of time, you can't build a major surplus of the product. This phone didn't start production until a few weeks prior to launch. And they can't turn out 100,000 units a day, but they are starting to fill the backlog.

Blackberry on Verizon, you can't go wrong. I use mine to keep in touch with parents over e-mail and Skype conferences with admins, stream Pandora, watch Youtube on the train, etc...Great multi-tasker (but with an aging OS...)
AT&T's 3G (WCDMA and HSDPA) network is still in its infancy and has yet to cater to the bandwidth needs of its subscribers. Too many users on their network, not enough planning to provide the infrastructure required to feed demand...just sad.
Either that or wait for the iPhone to launch in LTE (4th gen)...I'm having a nerdgasm just thinking about it.

Your smart phone experience is as much a function of the service in your area as the instrument itself. It also remains true that the Blackberry is a better business tool, while the iPhone is better oriented to domestic uses.
Verizon now exceeds AT&T in many US markets for speed and reliability for the enhanced services a smart phone offers. Talk to your friends and see what they experience in your own area. Then when you have chosen the service, see what phone models they offer.
The iPhone is still exclusive to AT&T, so if you must have one, your carrier choice is made. Another Verizon exclusive is the new Palm Pre, which shows promise as a business smart phone, and that I'm considering myself.
To flatly say one phone is better than another is very 1-dimensional, given all the variables of what each user wants, and the quality of local service tied to that phone. It's as personal as buying clothes, or a car.

Love the iPhone. When it works. But AT&T service is so horribly unreliable in my area and I don't have a landline. I literally have to step outside of my home to make a call. (that never happened with VZW)
Anyone wanna buy an extremely gently used iPhone 3G?

I've got a Blackberry 8900 and as much as I hate to admit it, iPhone has Blackberry beat in terms of the wow factor and user friendliness. Not sufficient coverage with AT&T /iPhone here in Santa Fe NM area and lots of other locations around here. OK if you're in a city with lots of cell tower coverage, but the 3G coverage is too spotty most of the time to warrant having an iPhone only usable part-time. (Like CO Jock's situation)
So for now and quite a while probably, I'll stick with my Verizon Blackberry Storm for reliability, although I don't get to use the 86,000 "apps" the iPhone supports.... (nor would I if I had the iPhone! I'm lame that way. lol)

I've been debating between the blackberry 9630 Tour or the iPhone... but the new HTC Hero with Sprint (as well as the other Google Android platform phones) look like the most promising buy. The Android app store already has over 10,000 programs available, and the reviewers are generally saying that the phones are more stable and more capable than the iPhone. I'm anticipating that a "generic" brand like Android will be much bigger than iPhone in the VERY near future...

I had a Curve (at&t) and am due for an upgrade. I soul searched and picked up an htc Tilt 2 yesterday (hold the tomatoes you crackers). After approximately 24 hours, my experience is the following:
1. By far one of the nicest piece of equipment, most stunning display; 2. COMPLETELY hobbled by what is the WORST pda operating system (Microsoft Windows Mobile); and, 3. Persistent failure to tether; equals
an appallingly frustrating experience for one of the more expensive handsets in the market.
So (there was a reason I asked the crackers to hold the tomatoes), I am taking it back tomorrow to get a Bold. Yes, I am a Crackberry addict. Why?
Two observations:
1. In hindsight, within the first few hours, I realized why the Blackberry is so habit forming - it is the OS. Very thoughtfully developed, uncanny in its intuitive use of keys and keystroke features, and, most importantly, an OS designed for a PDA (and not a PC-conceived OS crammed into handheld!)
2. Blackberry Desktop Manager is true, full featured middleware, as compared to the worthless piece of garbage known as ActiveSin...I mean Sync (which is sort of like having a body languate translator during sex).
I am a long time Wintel user. But death couldn't come fast enough to Windows Mobile.
That's my 58 cents. If you don't like the opinion, get over it!

I had an HTC Mogul which was the WORST PDA Cell Phone I have ever had. I dropped it down a flight of concrete stairs and it exploded when it hit the bottom (thank GOD). This phone was an eBay purchase to replace a Samsung Instinct which I hated equally because it was buggy and locked up all the time. The Mogul had the horrid Windows Mobile system on it and never worked right. Thus I am temporarily using my old flip phone.
My planned upgrade (for now) is to a Blackberry Tour. I have researched these phones on CNET and it seems as though the Tour is the highest rated one that Sprint carries.
That being said I do like the iPhone for the applications and the built in MP3 player, but everyone I know who has one hates AT&T's service. I know one guy who is actually an executive for AT&T here and who has a Verizon cell phone because he got sick of dropped calls and horrid service/reception.
I agree with Red Vespa - best phone really depends on what you want to do with it.

I agree with Red Vespa - best phone really depends on what you want to do with it. I have the Tour with Sprint - no problems whatsoever and you'll love it. I'm tempted to switch to T-Mobile and try out the new Bold2 when it's released next month tho.
