May 25 (Bloomberg) -- Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said Benjamin Netanyahu's speech to the U.S. Congress was full of "falsehoods and distortions" and that the Israeli prime minister had "imposed solutions" on issues that should be the subject of talks.

"He didn't say anything we can build on positively," Abbas told a meeting of the Palestinian Liberation Organization's Executive Committee today in the West Bank city of Ramallah.

In his address to the joint session of Congress yesterday, Netanyahu said that while he is ready to make "painful compromises," Israel won't return to boundaries that existed before the 1967 Middle East war, will retain full sovereignty over Jerusalem and won't grant Palestinian refugees any right of return to areas now within Israel's borders. Palestinians reject these positions.

The 1967 lines define the boundaries of the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, east Jerusalem and the Golan Heights, which were all captured in the war from Jordan, Egypt and Syria.

In the 44 years since, Israel has built settlements in all the territories, whose population has grown to more than 500,000 and obscured many of the boundaries between what was sovereign Israel before and after the June 1967 conflict. The Arab population of the West Bank is about 2.5 million. Israel removed its settlements from the Gaza Strip in 2005.

Abbas said that while negotiations with Israel are the preferred option for Palestinians, if talks don't begin by September they will proceed with a plan to gain statehood recognition from the United Nations.

"Our goal is not to isolate Israel, nor to challenge its legitimacy," Abbas said. "This is not a unilateral act; the unilateral act is the settlement expansion."

Well shit if Israel gives back land that was won during the war, to be fair the United States needs to give back land that it won during war...which is like all of it I guess, except for the Louisiana purchase. I know that part was bought. The rest was stolen from Indians, Dutch or the Spanish/Mexicans.
