So... HNY is finally in Boston and I'm thinking about signing up. Always wanted to try yoga and the studio is really close to my apartment. Problem is, last time I tried yoga (almost 10 years ago), I was horrible at it. Just interested in a beginner's session, but I looked at their site and only found info for their studio in New York? Has anyone tried this before or have any tips?

Hey, that's a great idea. What a money maker that might be! Now, to find someone who does Yoga good enough to be an instructor and aren't shy about getting naked. I only do it with the Yoga lady on PBS in the morning. I couldn't begin to try to teach someone how to do it.

I'd never heard of this before your post Vlas. But I think you really owe it to the RJ community to go and give us a full report. With details.

    Lots of details.

I wouldn't worry about your own Yoga skills. In my limited experience, Yoga classes are one of the most accepting of all types of people/skills/motivations. Very touchy-feely. And at HNY, it looks like the touchy-feely knob is turned up to 11.

A friend of mine went the other weekend. Here's what he said:

"HNY was good. It is a very rigorous practice. My legs were really tired after the class. As usual I joined the group going to dinner after the class, which was very social."

I do have to say that $25/session for HNY is pretty damn expensive.

If you're looking for a good beginner yoga class, I would recommend taking the Fundamental classes with Glenn at Sahanna (http://www.sadhanastudios.com/ Worcester Street/Washington). This is how I started out. Glenn is a great teacher. Classes are $15 or you can get a 10 class card and save more.

Actually they're having a beginning workshop (Fundamental One) tomorrow (Sat) if you have the time:
    http://www.sadhanastudios.com/workshops.htm

The Sahanna Fundamental classes are a good way to learn the basics. I have not been to the HNY classes yet but it sounds like you should know the basic positions before going, but maybe I wrong.

Good luck. I wish that I started yoga earlier.

What's the point of a nude yoga class if it offers the same as a less expensive class with cloths?

Or is the hot nude part a joke....?

I mean outfits look tight enough you don't need much imagination...

    A city folk thing I guess icon_rolleyes.gif

Hot nude yoga? Do you get booted out without a refund if you get a woody? icon_redface.gif

I never quite understand the "perversion" of yoga in the west. The traditionalist in me cringe at all this "new age" modifications. Yoga has been around and benefiting millions for thousands of years. How does adding heat and nudity make it any better? ( <-- rhetorical )

Wy, from what I have heard, hard-ons are not only tolerated but welcomed.

First, I have not done any HNY. Previously I looked over their web site and it really seems like their selling sex more than yoga which bugs me. $25/session is expensive. Again a friend of mine has done HNY and he likes it. To each their own.

I have done another nude gay yoga class (non-heated). But to be honest, the yoga was OK and I never felt completely comfortable with the nude part. And yes, I don't see any advantage doing yoga nude. I went there because my normal studio (which I have listed above) is mostly women and I thought that it would be nice to go to a yoga with other gay guys. (Hell, who doesn't mind seeing guys naked?) And no, no one got a woody during the class. They actually had strict rules which was good. I don't know how HNY is structured.

I like my 'normal clothed' yoga classes better. (It's good to have support. 'You know what' can really get in the way in some positions. LOL!)

Well, I used to have two good friends that did nude yoga here in LA and they said erections were not a problem - maybe it's different in each studio. I'm not necessarily an advocate of nude yoga but I have to say it seems stupid to offer it and then create "strict" rules about your body having a response. If you're creating what is clearly a sensual environment, it seems ridiculous to pretend otherwise. When it's a gay men-only nude class, you can't exactly claim the nudity is just for spiritual purposes.

I just signed up on their website and it looks like they require either previous yoga experience or a high fitness level. Even though I think my fitness level is good enough, I have absolutely no yoga experience other than my failure to mimic the moves I saw on Yoga Zone 10 years ago. Everyone is going to be so advanced... bleh. Thinking about signing up at another studio first to get the basics down...

The strict rules that I was referring to had to do with touching other people in class, revealing their names outside class, etc. They did mention that woodies happen and you not to be embarassed by it. Again, it never happened in any the classes that I attend.

The organizers of this nude class were naturists. I'm sure that they were argue that being nake is not sexual.

But I agree with you. Such classes clearly draw a particular type which is why I left.

I've gone to this class many times, and it's actually very non-sexual. The "rules" are just to keep out the gawkers. I actually like it a lot, and mostly because of the all-male part of it rather than the nude part. I must say though that I initially went into it to get over some body issue things, and I like that it's nude in that the focus is on the yoga, which might seem surprising.

There are a number of guys who have never done yoga anywhere else, so you should be fine to start there. Just get there early so you get a good spot to see Clyde the instructor. It can be difficult if you get a spot in the back and can't see.

From what I understand, it's very different from HNY, as that does seem to have more of a sexual overtone to it.

I don't really think I'd want to do nude yoga... I don't even think I'd want to WATCH nude yoga. Didn't you see that Seinfeld episode, the one with the nudist? There are just certain positions/muscle movements that are just not attractive in the buff hahahaha. icon_lol.gif

    ides -

yoga adapts and changes always to the current culture. it has not always been, or will ever be this "pure" thing you think it is. there have been, for thousands of years, yoga groups that were outlawed, banished, looked down upon by other yoga groups and leaders at various times in India based on differnces in religious beliefs (dualism vs non dualism), sexual practices, etc.

there were (are still) crazy cleansing practises where yogis would have to prolapse their rectums and scrub it out...sexual purifications where the yogi would ejaculate into a female and then suck it out, gaining spiritual enlightenment.

today, they all put each other down. ashtangis put down traditionless (anything goes) hatha classes, kundalinis will trash ashtanga for doing the same series over and over (versus their thousands of kriya sets)..etc...recently someone was yacking about how ancient all the asana were...in fact, many are recent developments during the late 1800's..so its always changing and adapting.

but, me, no nude yoga, vigorous practices like i do can lead to injury where i dont want injury (if things are hanging). plus, if someones ass is in my face, i want to know whos and i want it there by choice.

I've been several times over the years... No big deal. Some hot guys, some not so hot, some guys great at yoga, some not. At least in Los Angeles, the regular classes are not sexual, just nude.
The tantra classes, I've not been too. As for the massage parties...well that's another matter.icon_twisted.gif

icon_smile.gif Thanks for putting me in my place. I don't claim any expertise in yoga. Perhaps the Boston HNY is a totally legit practice. It's just that sometimes some of these additions seem more for marketing purposes than actual physical/spiritual improvements.

I was unusually comfortable with that. I think it would make you get really comfortable with your body really quickly. And being comfortable from your body might really have an effect on how one handles the rest of the world.

True. Although I feel if that were "the point" a name other than Hot Nude Yoga might be a little more appropriate. Now it just seems like a bunch of creepy, horny dudes.

ok, Vlas...I tried it when I was in New York. I was totally jazzed cause I'd been on their site for several weeks and had talked to some really hot guys.

So I get to class..I picked one based on the guy who was scheduled to be the instructor. He seemed like he'd taught a lot of classes and he was really good looking. The guy who answered the door WAS NOT the guy on the schedule. The guy who ended up teaching the class was this totally fem little dude in pink underwear.

OK, I though..no big deal..maybe there will be some hot guys in the class.

There were a couple. UNFORTUNATELY...two of the hot guys were together and on the other side of the room. The third hot guy was partnered with the instructor...who was all over him, as he totally ignored the rest of the class.

I got paired with a very NOT HOT sweaty dude. When we did the first partner pose, I was sitting in a butterfly position and he was behind me with his legs over my knees, pushing down on my legs to increase the stretch. He was leaning forward against my back and massaging my shoudlers. At one point I noticed sweat running down my side. Now, it was warm in there, but I'm in good shape and ahdn't done anything particularly strenuous, so I was kind of surprised that I'd be sweating. Even though the guy I was partnered with wasn't at all attractive, I hoped that he wouldn't notice me sweating all over. Thats when I realized that I WASN'T SWEATING..THAT HE WAS SWEATING BUCKETS AND BY THE TIME WE WERE DONE WITH THE POSES, I WAS SOAKING WET!

After class I talked to the hot couple across the room. We actually went out to dinner, the three of us. They said they were laughing cause they knew I was new, and that I got stuck with this sweaty guy and that they could actually SEE his sweat dripping all over me!

So here is my advice. make sure you're gonna have a good teacher. This guy sucked...he never really spent any time instructing. He'd call a position or whatever and then make sure his boyffriend was doing it right and then move on.

Make sure you go with someone who you don't find repulsive. Or at least sit next to someone you wouldn't mind touching naked.

I'll try it again when I go back,or next time I'm in LA, but I'll be more careful next time.

I know one of the instructors in Boston, so I do know there are hot guys there, if thats any help.

good luck and let us know how it goes....

oh, btw...Aaron, who owns HNY in New York told me personally that getting hard is cool. and I did notice guys getting wood...wasn't a big deal....

I was worried about it too, until the sweaty guy killed any erotic notions I had...

LOL! Sorry Tommy, that was a great story, tho. And quite informative.

In my imagination the class was just loaded with hot guys. The reality seems somewhat less appealing!

Haha, that story has me all scared now. Actually, I'm going to start a beginner's session with a regular (non-nude) yoga studio tomorrow. Maybe once I get better and start getting to know more yogis, I'll ask about HNY. Thanks for the info!
