I posted about this on the Outdoors forum, but come to think of it this is a better category (even though I will be camping most of the way).

I'm a journalist, and will soon become a US citizen. I'm walking approximately 4,300 miles from New York to Los Angeles, interviewing people about what it means to be an American in the 21st century. I'll write a book about the walk and the people I meet along the way.

Check out http://www.newamericanwalk.com for more info, including a map of the route I'll follow

I'd love to hear from RJ'ers who live on or near my route. If you have tips on where to go, or what places to avoid, please send them my way. And if you can offer me a place to shower, or maybe even a couch, I'd be very grateful. Most importantly, however, I'd love to interview some of you, hear your stories, and your thoughts on what being American means to you.

You're about to discover that they are all crazy. The whites hate the blacks, the blacks hate the hispanics, the gays love the blacks and hispanics but the blacks hispanics hate the gays, even when they're gay themselves.Demorcrats hate Republicans and Republicans hate everybody except Sarah Palin, who hates everybody. Everybody hates everybody, except for Jesus, praise the lord. For 12 minutes every Sunday they all love everybody. Then it turns back to hell at minute 13. I don't think even the second coming of Christ, Barrak Obama, can fix it. But, have fun on your journey!

I've lived here 10 years. I know that they're really not all crazy or full of hate.

Guatemala. I left when I was 21, and never looked back.

jprichva saidIt seems to me that your route is very South-centric, and that you will miss a great deal of the country that doesn't share Southern values.

To really get a sense of what's happened in the USA over the past decades, a stopoff in Detroit would be important. To get an idea of how the Civil War still resonates with people, a mild detour from DC down to Richmond, Virginia (the capital of the Confederacy) would be very helpful.

To get a handle on the true locus of crazy in the USA in the 21st century, South Florida would be a great stopover.

The walk is definitely South-centric. The only reason for that is weather. It would not be safe to walk too far north at that time of year. However, rather than flying back to NYC at the end of the trip, I'm planning on taking a bus back along the parts of the country that I could not visit on foot.

Your route doesn't come through Wyoming. If your objective is to meet people, the state with the lowest population is a good one to skip. Thus you will not meet me. I was going to offer you a shower, a bed (to yourself) with clean sheets for one night, and a home cooked hot meal or two.

You know, I've always wanted to go to Wyoming. Just from seeing it in pictures, it looks like such a beautiful state. And I think it is one of those places that retain a very "libertarian" American heritage. I was going to walk up to Cheyenne after Denver, but it might be too cold by then. I'll play it by ear. If I don't make it on foot, I will definitely go through on my way back, by bus.

For a glimpse into the 21st century, isn't it California?
