    Metta8,

I assume you are not a supporter of Bachmann. With that in mind, is your showing this intended to denigrate people who are motivated to do things resulting from a faith-based calling?

There's absolutely nothing wrong with cutting and pasting articles into the forum, presenting them for discussion.

If there was a god, and, if he called Michele Bachmann to run for President, it would be only because he had a great sense of humor.

You thought Palin was funny !
Wait until you see Bachmann stumbling along the campaign trail.

There's a difference. Read the link. In 2006 she told a parish that god had directly told her to run for congress. This is dangerous. God could easily (once Pres) tell her to nuke another country. God could tell her to track down US gays and keep records on them.

Socal, do you think the US gov't should be secular?

    I'm not Metta8, but I will respond.

Since I'm an atheist, I think that people who do something because "God told them to" are deluded. When it's something positive and helpful, like for example, volunteering in the local soup kitchen, no harm, no foul.

But when it's running for the Presidency, it becomes of much greater magnitude - it represents either an egocentric delusion of stunning proportions, or demagoguery of the highest order.

If you can run because God told you to, then that can be used to justify any action or position, no matter how nuts. Remember, she has said out loud, and without shame, that gays target children. No evidence is needed if God says it, right?

Yes, I think the government should be secular, but I don't have a problem if a government leader relies on his or her faith to provide a set of values that serve as a basis for their decisions. That said, I agree it is problematic for a leader to use God's word for specific policy decisions. So I agree with you and showme.

There are some gray areas, IMO. I was against Bush's stem cell research policies. One one hand, I felt his position should not be driven by his religion. But on the other hand, if his policy resulted from a faith-based value system that suggested what is right versus wrong, it was harder to criticize.

My posting was really in response to my curiosity as to what Metta8's position was on this, which led to his posting the video.

Always spooky, when someone says "God" is "calling" them to do something.

Usually, it seems to me, God's call also coincides precisely with what the person wants to do anyway.

That's one reason why I think the true "God" of some religious people is themselves.

We'll never know... Metta8 is probably looking for at least another dozen links to post as new topics. icon_rolleyes.gif

Unlike you, who used the same link in at least four topics one right after another this morning. icon_lol.gif

http://www.rawstory.com/rawreplay/2011/05/george-will-says-sarah-palin-should-never-be-trusted-with-nuclear-weapons/Sunday morning on ABC’s “This Week”, George Will stated that it is abundantly clear that former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin isn’t fit for the presidency. The Wall Street Journal columnist and former Reagan aide said, “The threshold question, not usually asked, but it’s in everyone’s mind in a presidential election. ‘Should we give this person nuclear weapons?’ And the answer [in Palin's case], answers itself.”

I think Bachmann just answered that question succinctly as well.

The US Government definitely needs to be secular because that is the only viable way America will remain free. This right wing lunatic claiming that God is telling her to run for President obviously is going to use the facade of lower taxes, and less government to disguise what she and all the other unstable idiots on the extreme right want to do, convert the US from a republic into a theocratic dictatorship. People like this crazy woman need to be kept very far away from the White House. This bitch is definitely off the wall.

That's a typical evasion. The issue is, which Party has the religious zealots & fanatics in the forefront, calling many of the shots? Which Party has the anti-gay hate in their platform?

    HINT: It's not the Democrats.

I believe that God only has one calling for individual men and women.

And it has nothing to do with politics. In fact, I think that people who state that "God has called them to do ${somePoliticalActivity}..." should be barred from running for office by their respective party, if not FEC laws.

There are very few potential candidates, whom if nominated by the GOP that would ensure my vote for Obama. She's one of them.

Thankfully, god is unlikely to allow her to win.

Perhaps the phrase "...off a cliff" got lost in the divine aether?

This is worse than anything I can think of. A lunatic of this type could easily decide marshall law for your entire country. She could round you and all other gays up and put you in internment camps because god said to do it, and a surprising number of people would agree with it. She could start a modern day inquisition where people just vanish. Any of this sounding familiar yet?

    Yikes.

I sincerely hope socal pays attention to this, alphatrigger.

You know, if you had four parties instead of two, you'd still have Dems vs Reps as the big players but it would bleed off the extremism from both sides. For example, a true way-to-the-left party (I always laugh when you americans call the Dems lefties, because our own Conservative gov't is farther left than that), and a true religious right party.
