I was basically gonna buy an iPhone 4, I like it, but I'm not an Apple addict (yet) and I was pretty impressed with the Atrix.

I know I'm just starting an infinite war with that title, but what do you guys think, objectively ?

I plan to wait until the iPhone 5 debuts, I believe this Fall before Christmas. Then I'll give my current 4 to my partner, like I did with the 3GS. He hardly uses any of the iPhone features, anyway, so it's already kinda overkill for him, and he's murder on phones (he sent his last Samsung through the washing machine). But he's getting into the iPhone, and especially likes the computer sync feature, which I set up with his MS Outlook for contacts, calendar & notes.

My experience owning an Android phone and an iPad 2 has put me firmly in the Android camp.

iphone 5 is coming out in a few months. But I would skip that one. I heard it's not going to be much of an upgrade. Probably more megapixels for the camera and iOS 5.

Initially, I thought the Atrix was pretty bad ass. But I think the Samsung Infuse and HTC Inspire are much better phones. I don't really care about the 4G network connectivity. But the larger displays are nice for watching videos, web surfing, and for Google Navigation.

There are rumors floating around that the next iphone is actually going to be "iphone 4S" and that "iphone 5" (major updates) won't be released until next year.
In any case- if you choose to purchase an iphone- wait- iphones are scheduled for a refresh- midsummer or so.

The Atrix's docking ability is a "cool" feature that makes for a horrible experience when actually used. It's an underpowered linux computer which means the software is barebones and you'll pay a lot of money to buy that "shell" computer to dock into when you might as well pay the "Apple tax" and get a better product.

As a mobile developer, I can attest that the Apple / iOS ecosystem is much more valuable, meaning developers focus more effort on those apps and your phone will be supported far longer than any Android phone. All Android phones are quickly abandoned by their carriers, whereas Apple continually supports software updates for each iPhone for 2 years. Less than 3% of Android devices are running Gingerbread (Android 2.3), which was released LAST DECEMBER.

The Apple vs Android question is the single most overplayed and generic discussion topic on the internet so go with what's important to you. If you're going to get Android, forget the Atrix and look at the Droid X2 (newest by Moto) or the Nexus S 4G. The Nexus phones are Google's internal phones so they receive all OS updates immediately.

I have to say I hate my android phone...the battery life and the bugginess of the thing is horrible. I've flashed it to numerous ROMs and I've finally found one that makes my GPS work but it continues to suck battery life unless I keep it in my pocket and don't use it, pretty much defeats the purpose of a smart phone.
