I thought I was going to have to beat this guy's ass today at the gym. So, I'm sitting there on the Lat Pull down machine. Looking around there had to be at least 1 other one available. I'm just about on my last set (3) after having taken the rests in between.

This old ass fucker comes up to me and says, "can you go rest on the office chairs, I used 3 machines and you're still sitting here." First response I was being polite and said, "I'm on my last set." He looked at me some more as if I was supposed to just get up. I told him let me finish my last set. He walks off and mumbles something and I tell him, I DON'T SEE ANY RULES SAYING I NEED TO DO THAT!".

He is so lucky he was an old geezer and I was not fixing to throw down with a senior citizen. I wish someone else would try me like that again, I won't even say nothing. I'm just going to take the bar off the hook and bust them right across the head with it in front of everybody...

Shit like that ruins my workout. I usually ignore them and do some extra sets. I've been known to blow kisses, wink, and grab my crotch.

I was trying hard not to let it...I ended up running some laps on the treadmill afterwards for a bit. I had to really talk myself out of it so hard from making scenary in the gym.

What makes it so bad is I try to go during quiet times. This was a Sunday afternoon. Not many people at the gym.

If I had to go to the gym during rush hour every time I think I'd lose the motivation to work out because I'd been of went off on so many people...

So, I went to the same gym again today. That guy should have been beat down on the spot...

There wasn't 1, not 2, not 3 lat pull down machines. There were 4! 2 by the cables and 2 machines although 1 of the machines were different than the other.

I kept thinking to myself, why was that idiot messing with me like that was the only machine? And it was a slow Sunday afternoon?

How stupid. You should have made him feel like an idiot by pointing out the empty lat pulldown machine. Annoys the hell out of me when people bug you for your machine, surely they can use something else or wait.

That is incomprehensible behavior, considering the availability of other options. When I wait my turn for a popular station I'll just tell people I'm going to be a while. Nobody's griped about it. As a courtesy I'll try to get their attention when I'm finishing up.

I'll play devil's advocate here and wonder if he's just projecting from the more common experience of people chatting in groups, lounging on equipment, or just sitting there talking on a cell phone for 20 minutes. That really irritates me, even though they usually are embarrassed and apologize for being inconsiderate when you ask to work in.

There's always two sides to a story. I can't see why the guy would be so pissed off if you weren't actually sitting on the machine between sets. And not all machines are alike. When I do my cable tricep pushdowns, there is this one pulley that's a little higher than the others (I'm tall and the other pulleys don't allow for a full contraction.) And yet they are all the same brand and all look alike. I asked a guy one day how much longer he'd be and he just pointed to all the other pulleys. I didn't bother explaining to him because he was short and wouldn't get it anyway. Sitting on the equipment between sets is rude and presumptuous. I think you were in the wrong on this one.

So, I'm supposed to just get up and walk away and let someone steal my spot? Nah, it don't work like that. I thought the rule was: You leave, the seats gone. In fact, before using something that looks like someone was on it...I'll even wait for like 30 seconds for them to come back. If they haven't by then, it's mine.,

I also hate 'working in' and I'd rather let a guy have a machine than to do that. I feel rushed and who wants to be bothered switching weights around? Just have it dude, or wait your fucking turn. Don't invade my personal space cause then we gonna bump heads.

I wasn't chatting around in a group or talking on my cell phone...although I do go online/text in between sets. And for him to lie and say he used 3 machines during my rests indicates that he's not busting his fat ass hard enough.

Again, what got me hotheaded was the fact that he could have just asked like a normal human being, "how many sets you have left?" Then I would have replied, "1". Instead he says, "can you go rest on an office chair?" That was disrespectful he should have gotten cursed out and I would have been raising my voice making sure everyone seen it.

I doubt that guy was from Denver...because people here kind of quiet and polite about things so he probably thought he could get away with. If this was in Florida someone would have turned that place OUT. It would have been a fight up in there.

Should have looked him up and down with a disapproving look and said, "I suggest you take your ass back to those machines and WORK HARDER before you graduate to this machine."

I can see your point on something involving free weights and people who are quite mismatched, but on a lat pull-down it's a simple matter of moving the pin. Takes literally 1-2 seconds, so I don't think that's a valid obstacle to offering to let someone "work in." Now, if it just messes with your head to have someone waiting, then you certainly aren't obligated to offer it.

My gym has a policy of not resting on machines between sets. However, with his question the old guy was out of line. But that was also no reason for you to FLY OFF THE HANDLE LIKE THAT. (If I misinterpreted your uppercase writing, just ignore my last remark.) Just point him to the other machines.

So what you're saying some of you is that...you do your 1st set.. get up.. go get the spray bottle and wipe down the machine to let someone else do their first set.. then they do their first set get up go for the bottle and spray down the machine and wipe it off after their first set and so on..
I don't think so.. When a person is using a machine they are allowed to complete their full routine at any gym I've belonged to. Provided of course that they aren't sitting between sets for minutes upon minutes and/or talking

It sounds to me like you have no business working out in a public gym. "Working in" is common courtesy in a gym and if that bothers you, you should probably start collecting weights for your home gym.

I do not see any merit in 'working in'. I can find a host of other exercises to do while the person is doing their set and guess what? Go ahead, guess....THEY CAN TOO! I have no interest in working in with someone. Unless they are using that as a ploy to flirt with me then that's different icon_lol.gif

As for working in on a lat pull-down machine yes it is a simple move of a pin but why do that when there are 3 other Lat pull downs just waiting to be used? That's dumb.

Since that minor incident I have paid a bit more attention to my time on the machines than before because perhaps I probably zoned out (which can happen) and daydreamed for 15 minutes not realizing it. But still...you don't just come at somebody like you know me. You'll get punched OUT.

Again, it's why I always try to avoid busy times. But for crying out loud, it was ironic it was a quiet time so seems like you've got to be prepared for an ass whipping at just about any time of day.

There's too much down time...and hovering when working in, so I don't like it either...unless I just want one more quick wipe out set before quitting. If I ask to work in it's usually just a non aggressive way to find out if they are done, or if it's worth waiting around. About half the time they are just chillaxing and apologize. I always say thanks..no worries bud. Same attitude if they say they're going to be a while...like fit4fit.

While my typical sequence has some personal logic, I'll mix it up in that situation and sometimes discover benefits to the new routine.

I don't do cardio at all; per se
What I do instead, is not rest at all between sets. I pick 3-4 complementary stations and my only rest is walking to the next one..repeat...repeat ..repeat. I eye what's open before finishing where I'm at.

Unfortunately a few other guys have picked up on this strategy and can get really possessive of up to 4 stations at once...leaving a towel, a shirt, a waterbottle etc..at each one. In that case...rude deserves rude and I'll just ignore their supposed claim.

I'll say it again Fit4FitnDenver...what you probably have is a guy with a chip on his shoulder over some bad encounter and he just picked the wrong guy to take it out on.There really is no conceivable logic to his behavior, other than venting some irrational slight.

People should have some fucking flexibility. There are hundreds of different exercises they can be doing without needing to use that one damn machine at that exact moment.

he was just an old bitch.
Normally guys will ask if i'm willing to share , which i always am... often i'd like to share more but , you know....
of course if your breaks of 2 or 3 minutes turn into 10 minutes on your iPhone , it can get annoying to people who would like to use the bench/machine whatever.

Correct reply: "Sure. there's an open machine right over there."

    "But I want this one!"

"Sorry, but I haven't finished my set. If you have a problem, go see the management. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm busy."

Fortunately, many places where I've been have sign-up sheets for cardio equipment that I mostly use, for 30 minute increments, not to exceed 1 hour. If you miss your time by 10 minutes, the machine is open to all until the next period.

Circuit-training machines are not usually so strictly controlled, and can be more problematic. But so long as a guy is working on it, it's his, barring any posted time limits. The "old ass fucker" (and I hate to repeat that, being one myself) was wrong, and I'm glad you stood your ground. You might check with management to confirm their policy, so you can cite it should you be confronted with this situation again.

Another ignorant stereotyping jerk. I'm sure you are quite the charming, mild tempered bigot yourself ;-) You seemed to present your feedback quite aggressively, then readily called the op an angry black man. Smooth way to pull that out of your back pocket.

I've watched some people monopolize equipment.

For example, I love cable routines but I detest the fact that everyone seems to want to use them when I want to. Many times if I see the cable area empty, I'll stop mid-workout whatever I'm doing so I can do my thing before someone else runs up on it.

Yesterday, I wanted to use the 2 cables. I asked this guy if I could work in with him. He was like, "well I'm using both of them but you can work in on the other one."

So I use the 1 cable because 1 exercise requires only 1. Then, he's still using the other one. So I'm just like, fuck it I'll go to another machine in the meantime. I'm watching, 10 minutes later he still on it. That's a total of 20 minutes on the cable!

I turned around again to see a bunch of beefcake mother fuckers surrounding the cable machine and I was just like, forget it...guess I'll have to replace that exercise with some cardio icon_rolleyes.gif

Sometimes when I find myself having to wait for equipment too much I lose my motivation to keep going to the gym. I try to get my ass out before rush hour, or either late at night but sometimes I go right smack dab at the 5pm-7pm bum rush.

I'm not going to even entertain that. We talking about the gym and you wanna come up here with some off the wall bullshit. But I'm not going to allow you to re-direct my frustration to you instead of the person who riled me up to begin with.

Your comment has been neutralized...(btw, for the record I do not condone violence. When I mention popping someone upside the head I mean that in the spiritual sense. The bible says: For our struggle is not against human opponents, but against rulers, authorities, cosmic powers in the darkness around us, and evil spiritual forces in the heavenly realm.

And when people start shit with me, they are basically being evil. Fight the good fight of faith!

    Reply thus:

Do you want to use a lat pull down machine?

    If Yes:

There are three others in this gym.

    If No:

There is no problem then, is there (said with a smile, suppressed menace and brooking NO chance of disagreement)

I have NEVER had problems like this.
