Am I the only person that realizes the price of gasoline is actually a penny more than what is says?

People always seem to refer to gas by the large numbers on the gas station sign - $3.45 for an example - when the sign really says $3.459, meaning it's really $3.46.

Yeah I've always noticed the 9 at the thousandths place on the price. I wondered why gas always was $X.XX9, my leading suspicion points towards some tax on it. But it is misleading, since we can only pay up to the hundredths place, so in essence while it is only, for example, $1.889 we still pay $1.89. You would have to pump in exact increments of 10 gallons for there to be no rounding up of the extra $0.009 cost.

Also on another similar quirk on gas prices: for as long as I can remember, even when gas was less than a dollar, each grade was separated by ten cents. So like, regular was $0.899, plus was $0.999, and premium was $1.099. And that margin of separation has remained so while the overall cost of gasoline has risen to current prices. But now, more and more I am seeing the margins changing. Now premium is like twelve cents higher than plus, which is about seven cents higher than regular. I don't suppose there is someone here who works in the gasoline industry that could provide some insight to this?

Yes, except in Canada it is in litres so the numbers are a lot smaller. In Toronto the other day it was $1.118/litre.

I work with numbers every day so I have no trouble being accurate with them.

How about this for a scam: in order to get gas, you have to drive to the gas station -- WHICH USES UP GAS!

    It's a conspiracy, I tell ya.
