Do you think it's getting better for gay people & homophobia/racism on facebook.

Sometimes, I feel the tide has turned, and then out pops some homophobic comment about gay people on facebook, followed by a stream of comments laughing, agreeing, and liking. Comments like, "if you wanna go be gay..." by a bodybuilder no less. Strangely enough he was a member of an anti-bullying group...

How do you react to these things: homophobia and racism on facebook? How do you feel when you read that? And, do you honestly believe it's getting better for gay people? I don't know...

i read a lot of it, i used to put people on "hide" till one of my friends made a good point by saying i was just isolating myself. (it's just facebook but he's right)

most irritating is the "no i support gay people but i reserve the right to call people a faggot" bullshit. it's just some cover up for personal issues. after saying something completely rude, they go on a whole spiel of how supportive they are. speaking of which there's a topic like that right now.

i got very argumentative about it but try not to waste my time arguing anymore. i do believe it's getting better for gay people. it's gone from no support at all to "supportive" and eventually we'll get something close to equality. (quotations implying not really supportive)

just have to learn how out the banter without giving up your own ethical standards.

don't take it so personal, if u do it'll wear u out, lot better things ta focus ur energy on. a lot of decent ppl that don't mean ne thing by it throw it around casually, if someone starts attacking a specific person, thats when u get pissed, half of my friends don't even know anyone thats gay, (or at least not that they know of icon_twisted.gif

Facebook is a collection of updates of people you choose to be friends with. I currently have 853 friends on facebook (trying to cut it down actually. another story.) and I never hear hateful stuff as to what you are referring to. Maybe it's my location, but I think it's really just the people I connect with.

Racism is funny. Homophobia is funny too. Seriously.....People that are homophobic are usually gay themselves.

Agreed; it seems like the haters & phobs are the only ones paying attention any more. Oh, & the communications mediums too (if it bleeds-it-leads, etc.).

The rest of us have grown up . . . (I'm not calling the OP any names here.)

    It depends really.

Is he saying "this pic is gay" and it is a pic of two men and/or two women going at it?

Then its not really an issue, as the pic is truly gay.

Now is he saying "I make sure the niggers and wetbacks know to stay away from my house" (Yes, a client said this to me once in person, I had to fire him) then thats fucked up.

    I prefer Spic over wetback.

yeah I don't experience any really hateful stuff either. But the most common joke among teenage boys/young men, when their friends have forgotten to log out of their account, is to post that they're gay.

not really hateful, but just implying that to be gay is embarrassing
