Dubai (UAE) web censorship

A friend of mine lives in Dubai and the government is "blocking sites with content that do not conform to the moral, social, and cultural values of the UAE"....which means he's not able to access just about all sites that are remotely gay or even use chat services.

I could go on a terror about how hypocritical and wrong the government is by doing this, but right now I'm more interested in seeing if anyone out there knows of a way that he can get around the web blocking measures that have been applied which allow such censorship. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. He has Windows Vista, if that helps. Thanks.

I'm just not sure if this still works but he can try downloading "hotspot shield" and run it before opening the web browser.
If that did'nt work, tell him to search for proxy sites. He could check out the yahoo group "brandnewproxy" for updates because the gov't is also fast on blocking these proxy sites.
I'm sure there are other way's. Maybe Other members could add.
If nothing worked, contact Zimatar. Im sure zim could give him a hand... or more icon_lol.gif

BTW... adult web site's are blocked, but you can watch PORN, straight or gay on your TV via satellite hook-up.
    Funny isn't it?

and... realjock.com is not blocked because rj is in the health and fitness category. Not just another adult hook-up site. Thanks RJ!!!

He could try going through www.proxify.com but they're probably blocking that too.

First of all, not only "gay" sites such as RJ.com is affected, even sites such as Skype and even facebook (God forbid!) are under fire.
On the other hand, REALJOCK.com is not blocked 'cos there is no word "gay" in its web address. I won't be surprised if this will be blocked sooner or later as what they did to Fridae.com very recently. If that happens, that will be the death of me.
This is all what I can say for now to all this ridiculous laws and hypocrisy...

The funny thing is even this kind of t-shirts is a criminal offense already.

The only way you can access this site is by going online in Dubai's "freezones" (now there's the punchline).
Some of the free downloadable programmes available online are blocked here as well. Seven years here, I just can't be bovered anymore.

Ok, if they finally block RJ, is there an "emergency" plan/way that we can have set up for Zimmy so he can 1) let us know the site has been blocked and/or 2) he can access via a url that wont have been blocked?

Just trying to think ahead here.

I work in the online advertising industry so we are always testing ways to get marketing material to show on countries that block certain content.

I've found that www.anonymization.net acts as a nice little portal. However, I'm sure that if UAE has thought of these solutions and blocked proxy sites.

Your friend's best bet is to shell out the money for some sort of satellite internet system. http://www.globaltt.com/en/ should have some good info for him.. I believe they offer service to the middle east.

Just keep in mind that if he gets caught he will probably get jail time or hefty fines. It might not be worth it.

I don't know if this would work, but it's designed to give anonymity to what you're looking at. It's called The Onion Router: http://www.torproject.org/ It also slows your access down to around dial-up speeds.

But if it's going to end up with you getting stoned to death or hanged please do a bit of research first.

PhxAriz08 saidzimatar I thought you live in Dubai? How you come to this website?

    Ahm, 'cos I'm gay? icon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gif
Like I said earlier, it will only be a matter of time when this gets blocked as well due to the 'gay theme' nature of this site, even if it's a fitness community.
    HARAM MY ASS!!!
