I have been to Kauai a few times but found accomodation options quite limited. the backpackers (one of them had homeless people sleeping in them last time i went) are pretty average and are 30-40mins drive from the north shore. the rest of the options seem to cater for people who like to spend tons of money on somewhere to sleep. can anyone recommend reasonably cheap places on the north shore? around hanalei bay or princeville?

    thanks.

I've stayed at the princeville resort before. Despite the name it is not fancy or crazy expensive -except for meals, which are expensive anywhere. Ive been told there's a few small cheap places in hanalei proper as well but never tried any of them.

I stayed at the Aloha Beach Resort Kauai for about two weeks and I know its not close to Hanalei and Princeville. I mostly drove to the N. Shore as well as Princeville since these areas where to expensive for me. I scored a rate of $100.00 a night through United Vacations since they were having a deal of selling some rooms at the Aloha Beach Resort. The nice thing about the resort was that you could do laundry on a couple of the floors at no charge, you just had to bring your own detergent, etc.

I know you could probably rent a room or an efficiency up in the N. Shore, but do not have any information.

When I go to Kauai. I step off the plane, put on my backpack, and stick out my thumb !! I have no problem setting up my tent at one of the beach parks !! Try couchsurfing.org !!
Last time my hiking buddy and I were in Hanalei, had a few days left on the Island, with no place to stay. We did have our backpacks. Someone asked us what we were doing. We told him about our time left, and he let us stay at his and his roommates place for the few nights we had left. Everything works out !!
