"Not Acceptable" is a powerful and compelling 30 second television PSA which gives voice to a variety of diverse communities each of whom expresses that it is not acceptable to call them by what were once common words, but are now recognized as offensive slurs. It culminates in actress and self-advocate Lauren Potter from "Glee" stating that it is not acceptable to use the word 'retard' and she and "Glee" co-star Jane Lynch make a call to action to stop using the word and to promote the acceptance and inclusion of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and to make their pledge online at http://r-word.org.

Wrapped in cloaks of ignorant rants, Rev. Phelps and the like hide behind the 1st amendment. As to what you would do without those words? Here's a thought: an increased, intelligent vocabulary perhaps. icon_rolleyes.gif

I've been on this campaign for the past two years. I help with an nationwide collegiate organization called best buddies that pair college students up with people with intellectual disabilities. You don't realize how genuinely sweet and loving people with intellectual disabilities can be.

And for those of you thinking this is another one of those movements pushed through by people on high horses or people trying to look good know that this all started with Rosa's Law. A girl with downs approached her senator saying how hurt she was by the use of this word and that she wished it would stop. So seriously, think twice guys, there are other words you can use you won't die by never saying the r-word again.

Well, total eradication of the word is obviously an ideal but not a reality, so at least think about limiting the use of the word and substitute it for another one... even if you still think it. icon_smile.gif

Yeah I used to call things "retarded" when I was younger. I met someone who had a "retarded" brother who was offended when I said it, and until that point I hadn't really thought about if it was wrong to say. I didn't stop right away, but I gradually got out of the habit. There are lots of other words to describe things you don't like, and if you keep using "retarded" after hearing about this, it makes you either lazy or contemptible. No excuses.

Oh wait, let me rephrase that to comply with our vocabulary police overlords of the left wing.

This charming coward who hides his pics has this to say on his profile:

Looking for those that dont post in the forums; they bore me. Looking for sports lovers, car lovers, MMA fans (yes, I fight--at 5ft7 with a smart-mouth you have to know how to..lol) and other real guys.

Hookup isnt out of the question. Just know how to suck and take a huge dick. Oh and any color in the rainbow is cool except whichever one beaners are; not at all interested in those. For the slow that means I dig white, (some) black, asian, M/E, A/I and N/A only.

I would defend his right to free speech - but with free speech goes responsibilities - but that concept would be well beyond this guy's grasp...

+1. We usually neglect and take people with mental disabilities for granted, assuming that they could never fit in with us when actually they are way more capable of having great friendships. One of my best buddies in elementary school has down syndrome and we had great times together. At that time, in school, everyone got along with the kids in special.ed class. In fact, no one dared to use the r-word and no one cared whether you are deaf, talk funny or need crutches to walk, everyone's invited to the field to play. I guess the best way to stop using these offensive slurs and being respectful is to connect with them.

FTF, child, you're too young to remember what it was like before society began doing a little self examination. Those were dark days. Stephen Hawkings would have been considered a retard. Is he mentally disabled? Nope.

Let me tell you a little story of a handsome young guy that called others retards. He ended up in a very disfiguring car crash. Not suprisingly, in those times, when he returned to high school he was the butt of many peoples' jokes and and called a retard. The ostracism was intense and one day I found him in the school foyer in his wheelchair crying.

In your zeal to promote your war against PC you are forgetting that many are children and so deserve protection from those of us *looks meaningfully at FTF* who are adults.

As 'out there' or whatever this statement is, the first amendment is a beautiful thing. Please don't take this as condoning the despicable thoughts, but he has the right to spew hatred just as Rev. Phelps or the crazy Koran burner in Gainesville, Fl. Freedom of speech is a messy, disgusting thing at times, but it is a cornerstone of democracy.

On a more positive note, I shared this video with a friend who loves to use the word 'retard'. He posted an apology on facebook for those who he has offended.

FTF, your lack of compassion and sheer cluelessness of knowing when to just shut the hell up if you have nothing nice to say is astounding. Yeah, I know, you do it for the LULZ. WHATever!

Having grown up with a severely mentally handicapped sister, I know all too well the cruelty and humiliation these people face. Many who have never been exposed to someone who is severely mentally handicapped don't have any comprehension to the fact that these people are human beings who, in spite of their handicap, have feelings and emotions. They are all too aware every minute of their lives that people stare, that people make fun, call them"retards" or even worse turn away from them in disgust. That said, I have absolutely no patience for some immature and obnoxious prick who would rather make some point about "political correctness" and post sad photos than show any compassion whatsoever. Karma will catch up with you, and I suspect it will not be pretty.

"Retarded" was once a fairly common medical term for someone who was developmentally slow. That is, their development had been delayed, held back, "retarded" outside the normal range.

But when the word entered general usage it came to be used as a pejorative, especially when the adjective "retarded" became the noun "retard." Because of that misuse, it is no longer an acceptable word. It is too often used as an insult, and those who are genuinely mentally challenged, through no fault of theirs, are smeared by it, too.

A word that needs to be retired. Not because of political correctness, but because of common humanity. I really don't think that's so radical an idea, neither liberal nor left-wing, but just the right thing to do. Yes?

True that. My father recently told me that one of his cousins was treated terribly as a young child. He wouldn't listen to anything his parents told him. They thought him unruly at home and "slow" at school. Later they discovered that he simply couldn't hear.

If I could I'd shove FTF in a time machine after making him temporarily (because I'm a pretty nice guy) severely disfigured and make him live through the late 50s and the 60s, even into the 70s.

FTF, you know I generally support most of your stands, but this one, not so much. I also rail against excess political correctness as much as I rail against cruelty. True, it was a medical term way back when and also true that ‘retarded’ can be the correct term for a bunch of other stuff , i.e.; my 61 Pontiac is not running quite right – maybe the timing is retarded too much. However, you know when you’re using a term as a pejorative to offend folks who may not be able to defend themselves adequately, but still know what the term means. It just isn’t cool.

So by your reasoning, the word "gay" should be used by no one?

Context is everything with words. Oliver Sacks still often uses "retarded" to refer to situations of stunted cognitive growth. Synonyms are never exact. He uses the word because, like you said, it has a medical history and with the crowd who tend to read Sack's word the medical use of the term is quickly and easily understood.
I do believe P.C. can go too far. Is it really worth obfuscating higher discourse because juveniles re-appropriated a word as an insult?

No, it it is not. But the way FTF has used the term does not at all equate to any higher (clinical) application of the word. It's meant in the meanest lowest and most derogatory of terms, and so cheapens both language and freedom of speech.
