Why do people use 4 machines at once! Stop it. Just stop

I don't know if it's just this particular gym I been going to lately or what but this is like the 3rd time I've had someone run up to me on some stupid shit. This is a bit similar than the other topic I posted about...but this is not quite the same subject.

So, another sunny Saturday afternoon I use one of the machines. I do my normal wait 30 seconds for guy to come back as he'd just gotten up to go to another machine.

Well, I get on there, un-rack the weights and then 1 minute later he come RUNNING up to me saying, HEY, I'M STILL USING THIS MACHINE!

I'm like, oh well I seen you walk away and didn't think you were still using it. He's like, oh well I'm using like 3 machines and switching back and forth. Again, being polite as I am I say, oh okay well go ahead. He's then like, oh no you're fine go ahead and do your sets we can work in.

So I do my sets and then I'm done. But I wanted to tell him, look brotha...this is a public gym. It's hard enough to find 1 machine as it is to be empty let alone 3 or 4. Why complicated the gym experience by using up 4 machines that 4 people may also want to use? Stick with 1 machine.

I know you want to work your chest and then your back. I know you want to do legs and chest at the same time...and that it's convenient to do so and saves time. I know you want to do circuit training. But do it separately. Don't fucking hog up all the machines because what are the odds that someone else is going to use 1 of those 4 machines while you're gone. You cannot claim a territory up in the gym.

I'm getting to the point where I'm starting to feel like everytime I go the gym I have to be ready to tell someone off on the spot. And it's making it hard to keep going!

So cut it out. (this is so going on my blog...)

Jeez, you start so many threads about gym rants. I think it's time for you to find a new gym. Or maybe go at different times. icon_lol.gif

Personally, I use the 5 minute rule. If you leave a piece of gym equipment for more than 5 minutes, I'm pushing your shit aside and taking over. If you wanna wander off and chit chat with your buds, Starbucks is down the street. If you wanna watch the game on the TV, then go to a sports bar. If you're doing a ridiculous 5 exercise super-set, then I AM gonna work in with you while you're doing your other foo-foo exercises.

I think we should recommend a new Forum Heading: gym rants.

I've got one: why the fuck can't anyone dry the fuck off in the shower? Why do they have to drip their hairy ass slop all over the bench, the scale, the floor under my locker...goddammit!!!! Did their god not invent towels for them?

Oh, here's another: hold your fucking pecker and aim. Jesus Christ, it's the big, toilet-shaped white porcelain thing. Were you this fucking bad at the bean bag toss too?

Sometimes when working supersets, moving from machine to machine. I always ask if i can work in a set between theirs. Most of the times they are cool with it.

You need to suck it up or switch to a new gym that is more appropriate to you.

A: is not your exclusive gym. You only pay a monthly fee to use it not to own it.

B: Is a membership gym. Other paying members are gonna come and USE the same equipment you are in whether you like it or not.

Huh? OK this is the easy way to do it. You want the cable machine, a guy is using it.

    (1) In his next rest ask him now many sets he has left to do and what his rest period is. If you can work in then do, but make sure you are not slowing him down. If working in isn´t gonna fy (eg if it´s two guys training together (ie filling all the rests)) do another exercise. Let them know you are putting yourself out for them and ask if they will call you as soon as they are about to finish (and tell others you are first in the queue).

That is about it. A simple "are you still using this? / Can I work in" normally solves all problems. OP seems to have very poor communication skills. I have NEVER had a problem with this (though I always phrase the way I ask things so that they have two very clear options, both of which work for me: you let me work in NOW, or you call me as soon as you are about to do your last set so i can get finished and take the machine after you.)

This practice annoys me too. I never know if a person is done on a certain thing, or if they have yet one more set to do. Being relatively new in public gyms, I don't rock the boat about it, and just move on to other things. It's nice to know it does irk others as well, not just me.

Ya, it drives me nuts too but usually I just go to another machine and hover in the peripheral between sets to let them know I'm waiting.

My issue is with the four guys who come in together and hog the one machine!

How do you beat that? I often find myself having to change my routine to fit in with these equipment hogs. This means doing exercises I wouldn't normally do on that day just to fill my program...

This is why I work out early in the morning before work. Generally, everyone there is in the same boat and are very efficient about getting their reps in and moving on. The few times that I have had a situation like this happen have been in the afternoon and on the weekend.

Because I know my temperament I try not to put myself in situations when I will have something like this will happen. I like for my workouts to be focused and intense. I am usually so focused that my social filter is turned off. I am not there to socialize and be nice so, confrontations are to be avoided at all costs... Others have a different philosophy and they pay the same dues as me (or more) so I can't knock them if their habits are different than mine. All I can do is avoid them.

I feel ya, though. It's damned annoying, but I'm not going to let that keep me from going. Control those things that you are in control of and adapt to the rest. That's all you can do.

I haven't noticed such behavior, but just because someone has a beautiful body doesn't mean they have class. I like to take the high road.

I too work out early morning icon_smile.gif
I'm up at 5 and I beat the traffic going to work because it's 2 min from where I work.

The only people I'm fighting machine for are much older men who are comfortable using one machine at a time. And I'm constantly working with them on some machines.

There are only a few other hardcore early riser at the gym, but we know each other enough and have no issues sharing.

I agree with the above posters, find a new gym or a new time .

LOL, same here. Its funny you mention that because for some odd reason when I first began working out I would go between 10 am and 1 pm on weekdays when the only people working out were the senior citizens and they were doing cardio. So for the past 2 years I never had any confrontations. I think what changed my mind is I got tired of not having any eye candy to look at while working out LOL. And I thought eye candy would equal being able to find a man but alas....3 years going and haven't met a single date yet. Oh well LOL.

But as time evolved, I began going right smack dab at rush hour and weekends. Generally weekends are less people but they aren't 'as' quiet.

No, I def won't let it prevent me from going. I just went to the gym today again and did my thing. I'm always prepared for the situation and I try to be as nice as possible, but some of the s**t that they do is a bit ridiculous. And I want to tell them that.

does this happen at your laundromat too?

One reason why I haven't used a public Laundromat regularly since 1999. If an apartment doesn't have washer and dryer IN THEM I will not move in them.

THANKYOU! The same principles apply. It's a public gym so you cannot claim territory unless your ASS is sitting on the machine.

I feel if I leave a machine, it's available for anyone to use. And most times I walk away someone will run up on it. How is someone supposed to do 4 at a time?

Wow Einstein has come aboard.icon_rolleyes.gif Yes, but the other guy is NOT complaining and making a huge deal out of it. I don't know anyone mature enough who would do that. Is not the end of the world. If communication doesn't work Just jump in and use the damn the equipment. End of the story. If the other dude doesn't like it too bad. if the OP encounters a bit of aggressiveness from the other member, report it to the club's personnel.

I try...not always with success, to ignore a lot of irritating, and /or overtly rude behavior.
Letting it anger you, primarily hurts you...and your workout that day. It can suck the energy out of you or get you injured.

Meanwhile, you are subconsciously projecting it outward. That energy bounces off of others and tends to come back to not only you, but others in the vicinity. The same applies here on RJ...and I'm not directing this at any one or any thread in particular.

Next time an exchange on RJ gets really heated...anger being met with more anger...make a note of how you're feeling, even if you've never posted and are just reading the escalating confrontations.

That said, I adopt the mental strategy of ksig121 and the practical action of ESCESV.
I "PREFER" to wrap up with the 3-4 machine quick rotation if the gym isn't too busy. But the only guy I'd stop from removing weights is the attendant who is just restacking what he thinks is an abandoned station. You can't exclusively claim 4 machines, even at the slowest times.

I do too...well, a duplex. And it took three years to accumulate the equipment because I bought it one piece at a time as the budget allowed.

It used to be nothing but a bench and weight plates on the floor, which was given to me by a former bodybuilder who wanted me to get my fat ass in shape. So I promised him I'd use it as a centerpiece and build a gym around it...and use it. icon_wink.gif
