Is who we date or attract a reflection of our personality?

I agree with this belief. I attracted this narcisstisic, homophobic guy. And, I feel that maybe I am this way too. Maybe I am this terrible person. That's why I feel so awful about myself. Maybe on some level I'm a narcissist, shallow, homophobe. But, I don't feel like I am. I had no idea he was a phobe until he unleashed all of that hate towards me and gay people in general after I asked him out, after thinking he was very interested in me.
Why else would I attract such a guy. I'm probably like him on some level.

What do you think? Do you think you are a reflection of who you attract? Or, do you think it's just random. That there are jerks out there, and there are nice people.

Gymrat, if you want to look upon this from a metaphysical viewpoint, I agree that what we attract is a reflection of ourselves (most of the time).

Jerks attract jerks and nice people attract nice people...

No...but, I am not this guy. I liked him and I told him it didn't matter to me what he looked like. I have never treated somebody so terribly in my life, nor would I dream of it. I could never live with myself if I knew I was the reason for causing such pain in a person's life.

So are you retracting the words above?

No...that's how I feel. Others might see me differently. Maybe I'm this awful, terrible person.

If that's how you feel, you are becoming this awful person. It doesn't matter how others see you, it's just a facade. Why not start by not badmouthing yourself?

I think on some level we attract similar people but not absolutely the same. If this guy was a total phobe and jerk and you honestly don't feel you are then you're probably not. If you really look, you'll probably be able to find several other ways that you are alike, some positive and some negative.

In some what we might have some similarity in our trait but everyone is different. If i am with some one that is same as me, that would be really boring. I believe the difference between each person will give us a chance to learn from one another. As a human being, we some what scared of the differences between one another. If you could learn and see through the difference, you will be a better person.
