I'd really like to make it out to Florida this summer...I've been wanting to for a while but just saw some nice fares that Virgin America has through the end of August, so it must be time to go!

Which is better for gay life? Orlando or Ft. Lauderdale? Any pointers?

    Thanks guys.

Avoid Orlando. I live here. And for the past 3-½ years it's been a living hell on earth. There's nothing worth it in this wanna-be town. It's like a giant open prison. Go to Miami/ Ft. Lauderdale instead. You'll have a blast.

I live in the Orlando area and it's fun place if you know where to go. It also depends what kind of fun you're looking for. If you want to go to a theme park, I highly recommend Universal and Islands. Unless you're a Disney enthusiast then the Disney parks would be cool too.

For shopping, the Mall at Millenia is probably your best best. Although the Florida Mall has a new-ish H&M and a few other stores if you like that.

One day you should try to do dinner at Hamburger Marys in Downtown Orlando on Church Street. The burgers and drinks are good and has a fun gay environment. But you have to make reservations in advanced because some nights they can get booked days or even weeks in advance.

If you're looking to go out for nightlife, I recommend Mr. Sisters. Pulse is also good too and there are some less crazier bars like Savoy.

I was in Orlando a few years ago, and if I never go there again as long as I live it will be fine with me. Never have I seen more Applebee's, Wal-Marts, and fast food restaurants in my life. Tourists everywhere, and I was shocked with how Florida bilks it's citizens and visitors with toll fees on the freeways....and that humidity...ICK! Ft. Lauderdale at least has the beaches

Curious Jock has a point though.. I live in Ft Laud and the tolls ONE WAY were almost 13 bucks for 163 miles. Orange County has HIGHER taxes than down here in So FL.. so I guess socialized roads sometimes work better..

To add insult to injury to Florida residents, Florida has some of the highest (if not THE highest) property taxes in the country --- and they STILL have the audacity to charge their citizens tolls for the freeways

Actually, I had an amazing and very romantic time with the person I went there to visit -- an RJ member, he knows who he is icon_wink.gif -- but only because of him and the place we stayed which was a hotel called "The Villas at Grand Cypress" which was one of the nicest places I have ever stayed. I highly recommend it if you're traveling to Orlando and you want a room with a roman tub that fits two people icon_lol.gif

Yes, there are tolls and yes, there are property taxes. What you've failed to mention is that there is no state tax, too. Overall, costs in Florida are less than costs in California (where I've previously lived), because the incidental costs are more than offset by the savings of not having to pay state taxes.

4another saidWhich is better for gay life? Orlando or Ft. Lauderdale? Any pointers?

For gay life the answer is Fort Lauderdale, and particularly Wilton Manors, a smaller town next to it. But WM isn't on the ocean, while FtL is, as well as having more gay guest houses & resorts. For an easy walk to the beach you want a place that's either along or on a side street of N Birch Rd, FtL.

If you rent a car then the Wilton Manors clubs are only 4 miles away from those guest houses. WM does have a few gay guest houses of its own, but then you're driving to the beach (but may be able to walk to the gay bars, if you plan to do much drinking). Most of the area's gay guest houses are quiet small, many without any food or bar service, though you can usually bring your own in.

The South Beach section of Miami Beach is interesting to visit for its art deco hotels, and it has the ocean, too, of course. But it's over a 30-mile drive from FtL, with horrendous traffic, and very little is actually gay there anymore. You do not want the City of Miami, which is mostly commercial and residential and not on the ocean (you can see the difference with a map).

Unless you choose to stay in Miami Beach instead of FtL, do not fly into Miami International if you can avoid it. Use Fort Lauderdale - Hollywood Airport, much less congested, and very close to downtown FtL, about 7 or 8 miles to the gay guest houses.

As for Orlando, I would only pick it for the theme parks, which are indeed spectacular. Gay life there isn't as active as FtL, and you might look into staying at Parliament House gay resort. But I'd ask RJers from Orlando, SILVERFOX1 being one.

    Hello?? Definitely go to Miami!

Choose the Fort Lauderdale airport because its better, but MIA and FT Lauderdale airport are the same distance from Miami beach, downtown Miami, etc...

I live in Miami (2 years) and I love it. But you need a lot of money to live here.

How about the City of Miami with all its hot, hunky Hispanic men along with an ultra modern downtown skyline that never seems to stop growing. Miami Beach obviously contains the hot, trendy South Beach neighborhood with a lot of hot, hunky men and where men wearing speedos is a very common sight from what I have heard about the place. icon_biggrin.gif

I've been to both. Wasn't too keen on Orlando but it was Feb. when I went so I should probably give it a second chance, the weather sucked when I was there.

Ft. Lauderdale is BADA$$. Spend some change for a hotel on the beach because it's worth it and most are within walking distance from restaurants, bars ect.

Ft. Lauderdale has an a great gay scene, check out Sibastian Beach, Wilton Manors, and if your curious, they also have 2 gay strip clubs...

    Boredwalk (nice with hot guys)

Jonny's (a dirty dive but cheap drinks)

Have fun, be safe, watch out for sharks and sea lice.

I live in Orlando and there are plenty of hot guys. Ft. Lauderdale there are too many hot guys which mean you gotta be careful. I actually went to a club in Ft. Lauderdale and this dude kept staring at me all night. He was gorgeous and his name was Tommy great build. A mix between Justin Timberlake and that guy in Burlesque which was Christina's love interest. Anyway I approached him and he gave me his number. I call him the next day and he just wanted to screw like that night and has a "sugar daddy" at home so wasnt looking for a relationship. He still wants to see me though when I go back out there.lol But you just gotta be careful

    Orlando resident since 1979 here....

To all you guys above me talking smack about our toll roads, fast food joints, cheap motels, and reducing us to the equivalent of Hooterville....

You are right. I agree with you.

Ft. Lauderdale is the better choice between the two. And compared to Ft. Lauderdale, we ARE Hooterville.

However in defense of Orlando, it is much better now than ten years ago. The downtown area is taking shape and even though the economy got us between the eyes in the housing market, the new condos downtown are very nice and affordable. The Thornton Park area near downtown has some great restaurants and a nice gay-friendly nightlife.

I will have to say the Parliament House has seen better days. A complete renovation of the entire property is overdue. Not being a club person, I like to go there just to listen to music and maybe have one drink--no bar crawl for me. One great place in Orlando which is very gay friendly is a bar on Virginia Avenue called Sip. Great food too!

Finally, I live here. I work in the travel industry and I find the theme parks to be one giant yawner. My clients know more about Orlando and the parks than I do. That's funny, but I'm not into it.

    Orlando? Ft. Lauderdale?

Give me New York City any day!!

And yeah....it has been All Casey...All The Time....for the last THREE years!

I've had a blast in both places.

I've had one of the best weekends of my life staying at "Inn Leather" in FTL (http://www.innleather.com). Even the most vanilla/shy folks can have fun with a sling in every room. icon_biggrin.gif

And "Jackhammer" in FTL has got to be one of the funnest bars I've ever been to (and my favorite leather bar in the country - and I've been to most every "Eagle" in the US).

Granted, my tastes are a bit more adventurous than many...

Another bonus for FTL is it's proximity to rent a car and head down to the Keys if you have the time.

As far as Orlando - if you wanna hit the theme parks (and they're fun!) then by all means do that. But if you wanna avoid all the touristy white-trashy Hooters/Wal-Mart stuff, stay in nearby Celebration. Clean, safe, nice restaurants, etc.

I've been to Orlando. Once. Nuff said.

I just returned from South Beach, a trip that included a day in Ft. Lauderdale and Wilton Manors. If I never go back to FtL/WM, I'm ok with that. Although brunch at Rosie's was fun. The food was good, the music fun and funky, the crowd an...interesting mix.

South Beach was surprisingly not gay, despite the large number of gay guys, hot gay guys and super hot gay guys that were everywhere. But the beach there was perfection! Better still, the Ocean Dr and 12th St beach was 90% hot men in skimpy swimwear. A feast for the eyes.

We stopped by Sebastian Beach on Sunday afternoon...it was not as eye candy as South Beach/12th St Beach.

And another thing...I was taken aback by the prevalence of sugar daddies with their boy toys in both Miami and Ft. Lauderdale. Someone mentioned this above and I think as a tourist it's worth repeating. A LOT of guys were into this sort of thing and are not afraid/hesitant to proposition someone who appeals to them in this way.

Edit: My advice- fly into Lauderdale, go to South Beach. Unless you want gay gay gay all day, then stay in Lauderdale. Although the beachfront in Lauderdale seemed mostly family friendly to me in the time I spent there. The only zone that felt remotely gay was the small area at Sebastian Beach and of course the ultra gay Wilton Manors.
