The way we discuss things

Am I the only one who is fed up with the way we discuss things here?

So often, nauseatingly often in fact, discussion turns into name-calling, tit-for-tat throw-sand-in-your-eyes stuff that solves nothing.

So often we fall into broad generalizations that have no meaning because they are so broad: "Lefties think that... " or "All Republicans want is... " You'd think the gay community, of all communities, would be wary of broad, meaningless generalization. "All radical gay activists want to do it... " Come on!

And far, far too often we fall back on empty buzz words - "the war on jobs". come on, that may feel good, but it doesn't mean a damn thing.

I used to come here to read both sides and - hopefully - to learn. But lately the place feels like a bunch of kindergarten kids fighting over who did what to whom on the swings.

I agree. Is it a reflection of the overall way the discussion takes place in the country.

But to NOT support Democrats in the "gay" USA means you are "anti-gay" and "self-loathing" as I'm sure you've read on here many, many times.

It seems the "gay community" does not embrace "diversity" as much as they want you to believe they do.

I encourage you to call out those individuals IN THE THREADS when you see them resort to such tactics.

Really? You couldn't once put yourself in a place of problem solving? icon_rolleyes.gif

I decided long ago that I would not be defined by what "the gay community" thinks I should adhere to: beliefs, political agenda, personal attire, music, conduct, and on and on. I might like some of it, but I WILL be who I am.

We need to allow diversity within ourselves.

In Australia though, calling someone a cunt isn't necessarily a bad thing...right?

    My thoughts exactly.

Come on, Southbeach, even I thought about what my posts are like after reading tazzari's comment. Surely you must have done the same, no?

I think why it might be so difficult is that if one side does calm down and refrain empty discussions, there may be a fear that the other side will not. And with the other side continuing to be loud, crass, and unyielding in throwing out empty buzzwords, it may give the impression, an unwelcoming one at that, that RealJock is home to one-sided partisan bashing.

What we may be witnessing is an attempt to drown the other side's bickering to even things out, which is resulting is chaos.

I thought much of the political bashing would have died down since the conservatives established their own site. Not that I assumed they would stop posting on news topics, I just think flooding a forum with new Anthony Weiner threads for each and every step of the scandal is overkill. Probably something more appropriate on their site, not here.

    But I digress.

It's not just this place. I'm a forum member on a local community website for my hometown area and it's the same way there.

It's actually kind of funny...they would all pretty much be considered "conservative" compared to the lot of you....but they will sit there and call each other "socalist" and "neocon"....then I can come here where pretty much everyone is "liberal" compared to my other forum...and y'all are pretty much doing the same thing.

Oh what trying times we live in...when the adults of our nation aren't bothered with facts, compassion, or solutions. Only with "winning!"

This whole spool of threads is a fucking retard shouting match. You have SouthBeach and SoCalFitness who put the retard in republican, and you have the liberals bitching and moaning like little girls getting surprise butt sex.

The only one who actually brings any intelligence to the discussion is curiousjockAZ.

And this is precisely what happens over and over again.

Some liberal on here will launch an unprovoked personal attack at one of the non-liberal minority on here. And sometimes (SOMETIMES) the attacked will actually return fire.

So, let's see if the OP will now condemn this guy's unprovoked personal attack on two RJ members, cited above.

Chainers was actually a bipartisan attacker as my post above notes.

I'm pretty liberal. I've arrived at this position through my own life experiences, and through some soul-searching and thinking. Which, I believe, is the way most of us have arrived where we are.

I do have some pretty conservatives friends. While I often disagree with them, they remain friends, and I learn from them because they pick holes in my arguments and I have to re-examine. That's they way healthy societies function.

And that's what I'd like to see here. A place I can come to, disagree, learn, and not get called a fuck-turd or some other form of endearment, or told that I think just like all the other "lefties" (whatever that is). Because, strangely, if you spit in my face, or shout at me, I stop listening to what you might have to say, and the whole thing comes apart.

Which seems to be where we are as a nation, too - failure of adult leadership.

Shouters, name-callers, people who make vast, broad generalizations - are the enemies of the open society.

Probably unrealistically, I'd like to see this board go back to discussion, not vituperation.

    Asking too much?

While I would have said it a little less colorfully and not referred to specific people, I think there are a good many people here who feel exactly the same way. And once again I see here both sides claiming it is the other side and not them, when in fact it is both sides in these political threads. Sure there is drama in the other threads, but it pales in comparison to the percentage of topics in the political threads that disintegrate into bickering, name calling, and accusations that have nothing to do with the original topic. A shame when so many of the participants are the older RJ members that should be setting an example. I am sure there are many people who think those of us who usually avoid these threads are just shallow guys who only care about guy above you threads, music threads, hottest guys in commercials/sitcom/movie threads, etc., but really why would most people want to be a part of these threads, even if the do care about politics.

"My limit for retardedness is capped out all ready."

Which is why I use the "ignore" button. At my vast old age, I've simply stopped trying to talk to, or reason with people who are too convinced to listen or teach, and see any opposition as some sort of devil's spawn and a ruthless effort to tear down America and destroy civilization as we (ie: they) know it. icon_biggrin.gif

Yeah, I do it too - but generally in the privacy of a beer with some close friends. I try not to splatter it all over the net.

Which brings us back to the "ignore" button.

Let's just be honest. There are very few, if more than a couple, politicians who are willing to do what truly needs to be done despite what either party/side is hissing.

We have got to cut back the entitlements.
We have got to cut back on military.
We have got to curb the illegal immigration over our southern border.
It's time to double-tax companies who send jobs overseas.
We have got to end this "War on Drugs" and reshape our strategy on keeping dangerous drugs off the streets.
We have got to start talking tax on marijuana, a cash crop waiting to be the next economic boom.
We have got to flesh out the lobbyists who continously try and negotiate with our elected officials.
We have got to scale back on Executive Powers because they have gotten completely out of hand.

That's really just the tip of the ice, but you get the picture. There are so many things that need to take place, but there isn't one single special interest that isn't effected therefore - everyone's up in arms trying to save the source of their greed.

The older generations in control of our Government have utterly and completely failed the future of this nation, by not bringing solutions to the table now, instead of partisan talking points.

One more decade and the Millenials will begin their ascent to controlling the government...and most likely reshaping this country in a radical (not left-right radical) way.

Must agree with you Christian. This guy must have some problems in his life that are reflected in his posts. I thought in the past he was ok, but during the past few weeks I defended a guy who is seeking help because of some problems and he created some needy threads. Chainers follows him and tries to make the guy's life on RJ miserable. He was upset that I defended him and called me all kinds of age related names. No politics were involved.
